TUTORIAL: How to post in Gear Swap so it sells
Discussion in 'Gear Swap' started by Rick Ross Da Boss, Jul 23, 2019.
Looking for a couple of transceivers that require a new home
Couple on eBay right now. An older model from Ortovox (S1) and the original DTS Tracker. Search on "avalanche transceiver". Both are starting from $29.
Of course the original designs have been replaced with newer models now, and the seller seems to have upgraded to those. Your call whether the older units fit the bill.
Yeah am watching those, bit of time left on them yet, cheers
Keen on the dts, the s1 ‘flip phone’ not a bad option though
When I got mine my first thought find a second hand that was cheap but after some thought I went with a new current model. My reasoning was - It is a fairly long term investment and would be outdated at time of replacement so if I bought one that was already outdated and used, the lifespan for me is shorter and would have to replace anyway. Mine are now 4yrs old and not any issues so far. Probably 100 days use and cost $400 so $4 a day,(cheap) never engaged for anything other than training (touch wood this is the only use it ever gets).
A Barryvox just turned up on the Bay.
Awesome, cheers for the heads up, just what I’m looking for.
Steer clear of the S1, not the best model to come out of the Ortovox stable.
Ive got one of these
I would have to work out where it is as I left it with a mate in Canada 18 months ago but last i heard he was due back in Aus in August. PM if interested and i will look into it.
Cheers, I’ll keep it in mind as I’m bidding on a couple atm
Clearly you should have left it in transmit mode to make it easy to find.
I can’t see it
Sorry - FB pulled the plug.
Try FB Australian Backcountry
Barryvox beacon, probe, $300
Yeah I just saw this too. Hot property.
Nice I’ll check it out, cheers
Just won the two on eBay, 360 for a dts and a s1 ortovox. Seems a decent price, thoughts?
Good for training. I’d never use a beacon I didn’t know the full life history of.
If they work in training what are the risks in the real deal?
Could have been submerged, could have had a big drop from a height onto hard ground etc etc.
True, sad reality is I don’t have a spare 1200 for 2 new ones
My thinking is that if they work in training I see no reason why they wouldn’t work in reality, hope to never be proven wrong....
Is it the original DTS? Only 2 antennae I think. I understand 3 antennae was a big and worthwhile leap in performance.
1200 is a bit steep for 2 unless you are after top of the range. A bit of googling should have you under half that for newest tech but lower models new.
would have loved to have got two new barryvox units but
Yeah the original 2 antenna version
No doubt there’s always going to be better and newer versions of all the models but I haven’t read any reviews with big negatives about it.
(Also keeping an eye on a barryvox element on the bay)
This guy is the other I’m watching atm
Looks to be a better unit than the others so fingers crossed
You might be referring to the S1+? Which is fine if it's received the factory service and update.
The problem with only having two antennae is that it's not possible to resolve signal spikes. This is an issue in practice when searching, which is why all currently manufactured beacons are 3 antenna.
If it works fine for training, and passes self tests on startup, then you shouldn't have an issue.
The thing that kills beacons is usually moisture ingress (they live and operate in high humidity environments!). If you notice corrosion on battery terminals, you probably aren't far away from error codes. 5 - 8 seasons of heavy use seems a reasonable life expectation based on the experience of myself and others across arva, pieps and bca. Amongst my comrades the beacon that has lasted the longest under very heavy use is an ortovox s1 which is on its 11th season with a mate.
My Arva carked it mid way through last year, that was it's 8th season of being treated rough.
No I was referring to the S1.
I had an F1 for many many years and it was bullet proof, except for the one time I forgot to throw it in my carry on and left it in my ski bag. Patrol friends all had S1's as they were supplied at one stage. I used there's at times and much preferred my F1. The first S1's were shakey at best and awkward to use. I switched from Ortovox at that point. I must admit I've not had any experience with the S1+.
Interested what you found "shakey" about 'em?
Turn of phrase. I got the impression it was raced to market could have been a lot better than it actually was.
It was a time of rapid progression in the beacon world. Updateable firmware is helpful though... It has certainly been a stalwart of favourable reviews and seems to be popular amongst swiss sar gurus.
BCA Tracker 3 on the Bay now. Starts at $300.
How do you dispose of one very old avi beacon? If I chuck it in the recycling bin is that OK? (I have taken the two AA batteries out.)
Shotgun at 20 paces.
No to recycling bin, it's just a lost cost to the recycler to deal with.
Try to get it into your local ewaste, many councils now have ewaste but you usually have to deliver it yourself. They often only want to accept TVs and computers. Tell them it's a small computer, which it is.
Other wise it's landfill waste.
A lot of the mobile phone shops have a bin for responsibly disposing of old phones. Toss it in one of those.
Just noticed that Freeze Pro Shop has the Pieps Pro BT for sale at AU$448 including delivery. They also have BCA Tracker 3 slightly discounted at AU$391.
i need one.....in melbs. halp.
