Transport between Merrijig and Mt Buller

So it looks like we may be having a week at Mt Buller this winter, and I was wondering what transport options exist between The Sebel at Merrijig and Mt Buller for a family of four to go up and down the hill each day?

Ideally, we'll be leaving skis/boots/poles in lockers up at Mt Buller overnight.

Why not stay up on the mountain ?

That'd be my preference, but the FIL might be gifting us accommodation through some membership he has with Accor.

That's a bit shite ref - lockers @wolly - I've relied on them in the past at Thredbo so I don't have to cart my gear back and forth/walk in ski boots for miles like some sort of demented robocop.

Wait till closer to the season, may not have finalised winter timetables or some such.

Buses go up from about 7 - 7-30 AM well in time to get first lifts even if there is a ton of snow.
IME Car is ok if you are staying on mountain overnight or doing day trips, otherwise the Bus is the go.

In the case of day trips you are parking in day park and getting on Nth Side direct tot he snow but if you want storage overnight you may have to go to the village on the free shuttle from day park and cant take luggage on it.
Whereas the bus up from off mountain you can take your gear up first time to store it overnight, also avoiding the interchange from car to bus at Horse Hill.
No car hire hassle and no chaining up daily.

Just arm yourself with chains for the week and DIY.

From Sebel you can be up the hill before the hordes arrive, and enjoy the cruise. Chances are you won't need chains at all, and if you do, you'll be excited about it anyway. Also gives you the flexibility to leave when you want, if you fancy an early dinner in the village before heading back down.

How old are the kids in this family of 4?

Driving yourself means greater flexibility, catching the bus means being constrained by the bus timetable

Grandpa oh and computer programmer too.
A three night winter midweek stay is something I have wanted to do ever since a week there over Easter some years back.

Anyway https://www.mmbl.com.au/winterservice has the timetable for 2020 so chances are it will be the same this year.

With 4 people though driving up would seem the better idea. If the Accor points just cover accommodation not bed and breakfast then be in the vehicle early for convenient parking and relax over breakfast on the hill.

Unfortunately the costs of the bus up and down the mountain each day blow the savings for off mountain accommodation away.

For a family of 4, daily return from Merrijig for 5 days is $1,167.50, based on the 2020 prices. You can get a season parking pass for half of that, or day entry only for $240. Sure, you're up for fuel etc, and maybe chain hire, but even so.

What's even sadder is that some companies manage to do a return bus trip from Melbourne for less than MMBL charge from Merrjig: https://www.extragreen.com.au/mt-buller/

And this is why I was looking for options. As someone used to Thredbo/Perisher transport arrangements, those prices are a joke.

Buller road is far from treacherous, and gets heaps of traffic which melts a lot of the snow, if you've got the clearance ladder RWD chains will be fine unless snowmageddon, in which case the buses will be super delayed too.
LOL i drove a VC commodore daily for a couple season i lived off mountain, did falls hotham and buller multiple times, drove past a couple of those silly euro all wheel drives that required chains to be fitted to all four wheels on hotham was amusing for an 20yr old at the time. The day i caught up with you wasn’t even a requirement to carry chains, I’d forgotten how short and easy the buller road was

That pricing is crazy. The Buller road is an easy drive, midweek it will be quiet and the ability to just hop on the chair at horse hill or get the bus into the village makes for a relatively smooth transition from car-park to slopes.

I had to go to the MMBL web site to check the prices as I thought the price you mentioned was a mistake

wow that is expensive day entry

Eh - I've kept an eye on the reports for each of the Resort Management Board areas in VIC, and it's apparent that they aren't exactly raking in the money. I'm not sure how the costs of the same services are divvied up in NSW, but it is a stark contrast.

IMO it is well past time.

A cable car can't move the numbers, we need something like 5,000-6,000 per hour to handle the peak
periods. The 3S products can do this, they are a hybrid lift, based on tech from a gondola and cable
car. Key features are very high uptime, full redundancy by design, wind is not a problem almost ever
(helps if the path is in line with the prevailing wind), huge capacity and very fast. Low running cost.

I looked at Mirimbah and was working on a plan to start there for around 6 years. It has some benefits
as well as some issues, the main one being the cost. Finding $200 million is harder then it might seem. :confused:

So around 4-5 years back I started to research the plough shed as a starting point. There is a lot going
for it. The gradient is a big part of the solution, the area to the south of the plough shed chain bay is only
second to the village and baldy. And it is a huge area, easily enough for 4,000 cars, plus buses, loading/
unloading bays near the lift etc. The main power feeds in to the resort (under and above ground) are
there. Good water access with the creek. The alignment is North-South, inline with the prevailing winds.
As the face is facing north, it has great solar access, helps burning off snow in the carparks. 2,000 bays
can be access without stairs, it could be more.

Parking 4000 average size cars at the plough shed location, saves 16 tonnes of CO2 of what would be
used driving the extra 16km round trip.

It is close to half way down the mountain, both in distance by road and attitude, 8 km and 480m below
the village. The direct path, is under 2km, making a trip time about 4-5 minutes. It is below the 7 hairpin
corners and for the most part, the snow line. I expect you would never have to carry and or fit chains.

The lift would only require one tower, just above the Gas Tanks, to rise above the tree line. There is
jeep track access to this area. Tree removal would be limited to the car parking area as the lift is
above the trees beyond that.

This product would be as much about the green season as it would the winter, this helps a lot as
far as cost goes. Many other ideas in the past required the winter visitor to pay for it in full. The area
is perfect for mountain biking as well as separate walking trails, via the Blind creek falls. In fact, plans
are already underway to develop mountain bike trails to the plough shed. I ride the area often, about
3 times a week. The 3S (35-38 passenger) cabins are big enough for several bikes and riders to walk
into.

There are many other benefits, such as it would free up most the parking areas around the skating
rink for increased snow play, snow mobile rides, staff accommodation etc. The Sled Dogs could be
there as well. Removing all road side parking (excluding the village).
