If you've got the time, the Great Ocean Road is worth it. Allow a full day from Melb to Warrnambool along the coast with stops but if you travel back to Melb inland it's around an easy 4 hour drive max.

Yep the 'temporary' parliament house that ended up being used for over 60 years...

Funny that you mentioned Warrnambool, I just booked my first night in Australia there. I did a bit of reading on the 5-hour flight to Vancouver. So when I landed, I did a few booking. Still missing Saturday night which will be somewhere in Melbourne.

    Officially booked:
    Fri 24: Warrnambool
Sat 25: Melbourne??? Not booked yet.
    Sun 26: Mansfield
    Mon 27: ski Buller, Bright
Tues 28: ski Hotham, sleep Mt Beauty
Wed 29: ski Falls Creek, sleep Mt Beauty
Thurs 30: drive to ??? Probably near skiing. Snow is in the forecast.
Fri 31: Ski day 101 and the 1st of the last 4 ski days of my season.

Not a TR, but first post on Instagram done:

Provided you duck off the main drag as often as possible. The highway is boring and you see nothing. There are lots of secondary roads to the east of the highway that follow the coast.

Well technically, the farthest ski area from Ottawa would be Mt Mawson in Tasmania. It's a very small and remote ski area with only three nutcracker rope tows. But you are going to Mt Buller, which is the most distant major ski resort from Ottawa.

Warrnambool? Interesting place for a tourist to stay. It's a fairly ordinary mid sized coastal town with nothing much to distinguish it from anywhere else, except for its impossible name. But I guess it does represent what an ordinary Australian country town is like, unlike the other more touristy places you're going to.

Why Melbourne on 25? Why not go via Ballarat straight to Mansfield? You get to see a bit of inland Australia and not double up on the GOR.

You don't double up on the GOR if returning via the Princes Hwy from Warrnambool and you do get to see a little of rural Oz. The GOR is a great drive and well worth it.

In addition to the Canberra monuments/institutions, rent a bike (or borrow one of the free ones dotted around the city) and ride around Lake Burley Griffin. You can also bring out your inner child at Questacon (very similar to Science World in Vancouver). It’s a very nice city (don’t listen to the big city troglodytes!).

So people from "North of the Border" want him to bypass Melbourne, a vibrant and exciting city of 5 million people with lots of things to do for everyone, no matter what their tastes... and instead... spend time in a provincial city full of political hacks and bureaucrats?

Now I know he comes from Ottawa, the Canadian equivalent of Canberra, but do we really think he wants to see more of that sort of thing?

And there I was thinking that he was landing in Melbourne. Oh well. And if you go back through the thread you will see that I have suggested he miss Sydney and Canberra by ducking straight down to the coast from Jindabyne.

I wish Melbourne people would grow up and lose the chip on their shoulder. It is so tedious, and I doubt a Canadian cares.

It wasn't so much that people were saying that he should bypass Melbourne if he had limited time, but rather that he should spend some of that limited time in Canberra which is very much a "one company town".

If it was me then I would give Sydney , Melbourne and Canberra a total miss ( nothing there but blowhards sipping coffee in the gutters and whining about everything) and spend more time in the bush where there are real sights to be seen and less blowhards sipping coffee in the gutters and whining about everything. :p:p:p;););)

I lived in Melbourne for about >30 years. Don't miss it but visit a couple of times a year to see family, shop for stuff not available locally etc. Restaurants, art galleries are good but basically I hate crowds and traffic and am happy to avoid it

Canberra is a still a bit of a novelty and I really enjoy visiting there still.

Totally agree. Caught the 12 apostles at sunset. Yes, definitely a drive back inland and a bit of Melbourne today and tomorrow before I head off for Mansfield.

Lift pass at Buller for $90 instead of $128. ;) Plus i want to get a quick peek at Australia and not just ski. So a bit of touristy stuff now and before I fly back.

Well done. It was a beautiful evening yesterday down on the west coast with the sun setting and the moon quite full.
Not your cliche sunset with the clouds, just beautiful soft hues (at least where I was at Fairhaven)

It was great. A question regarding pictures I took yesterday. I can’t upload a pic with the currently wifi I have access with, but what are the mountains I flew over? Posted on my Instagram (first picture is Vancouver airport when I left). One of the mountains is clearly a ski area. Which one? I know it’s a Victoria area. The first mountains I presume are or around Kosciusko?

Madpatski is my IG name also.

That's Mt Buller. It's a bit to the side of the nearest major range, so from some angles it looks a bit like an isolated mountain.

Should find at good pub restaurants, or if cooking yourself, Roo is available at major supermarkets to wack on a BBQ.
Many councils provide free BBQs in recreational parks for public use (as below on Noosa River).

Cracking pics on your Instagram. Hope you avoided the buses at Mt Buller and made use of HorseHill access chair for your day trip, a much more pleasant experience. And hope you had some cracking runs down the Northside in to the wooly buts!

Thredbo YHA has availability on Friday in a 4 share room for $112. Saturday is harder. You might need to call around a bit - try Kookaburra Lodge in Jindabyne - 0264562897.

    A bit of history-

After about an hour from Mt Beauty you’ll follow th Hume Weir and come to a town called Talangatta. The first one is the new town and then about 20 mins on is the old town. The old town was flooded when the weir was built so moved to the new site. The new town has a lot of 1950s architecture given that was the era it was built.

My grandfather said the residents in old talangatta didn’t believe the Water would flood the town. But then the water got to the back fence, the house, and it was only when they were measuring the water level through the floorboards that many decided it was time to leave.

About 40 mins on from Old Talangatta is where my ancestors come from, they had a cattle station in the mountains called Annandale. It’s still there but no longer in the family. You can imagine what it must have been like in the early days given how isolated it is even from Talangatta.

The drive is stunning and not many tourists have see that part of Australia but it’s the real Aussie bush. Enjoy!!

Do a bit of ringing around. Sometimes places advertise minimum 2 night bookings but have spots available on odd nights. As @silva said, the YHA is a good option in Thredbo. In Jindabyne try the various motels (eg Sierra Villa, the Station) and you may also want to give SkiRider and Sponars a call - they are inside the park boundary and closer to Perisher. Nothing will be cheap on a weekend in Jindabyne.

Thanks. Internet at the motel I’m staying is terrible (not able to get emails or finished searches online). Up at Falls now.

    The plan:
    Tonight: sleeping at Mt Beauty
Thurs: driving on down day weather wise. sleeping in Jindabyne.
Fri: ski Charlotte Pass, sleep Thredbo YHA
    Sat: ski Thredbo
SATURDAY: Still haven’t found a place to sleep. I’ll try the suggestions stated above once my ski day is over.
    Sun: ski Perisher, sleep Jindabyne
    Mon: ski Perisher
    Tues: Canberra

That’s it for now, back on the snow.
