I will be in Tromso in Northern Norway in mid December this year for a few days (before heading up to Svalbaard, Longyearbyen). I see they do have a small ski slope there I can have a play on. Has anyone here skied in Tromso before? I cant find much info on it, only that the season starts in January, does that seem right? I would have thought it would have started much earlier.

I was up that way in 2011. See this TR and the Tromso bit here.
From my comments at the time:
So would be fine if you have x-country or touring skis.

If you have the chance though head to Narvik a bit to the south (also in my TR). That is a proper ski resort.

The reason for the later start would almost certainly be because of the lack of daylight hours before then. I was there in April - long daylight hours then.

I have not been there - but from a question and answer om about "Tromsö Apinpark" the answer to season opening in this season was
"It will be open when it has snowed, maybe January maybe February"
"Follow on Facebook" it said somewhere else.
Generally there is a problem with snow.

Don't get eaten by the Polar Bear on Svalbard - carry a gun! But avoid using it! ;)

Narvik seems to be less than 100km away so it might be an option and an excuse to hire a 4wd and look around. If there is nothing happening in Tromso, I might try to get in a day at Narvik

Likely so, I just expected that snow wouldn't be an issue this far north of the arctic circle in winter.

Yes, the law in Svalbaard which requires you to carry a gun is a bit different. As a shooter, I might need to hire one for our snowmobile trip, but yes, I dont anticipate using it.

Daylight might be a problem. From 6th December, only dark and twilight. No daylight.
