Just wondering about claiming gear under TRS on the way out of the country. I'm aware you have to declare it on the way back in too, but I was wondering the declared value. Say you had an $800 pair of boots and got back your $70 give or take from TRS, on returning would the value of the boots be $800 or $730?

Hands up all those who have declared TRS stuff on the way back in?

From what I can gather, most regular items are declared used and then depreciated, it's only really things like Rolexes and diamonds that they are interested in.

When I got my refund for an iPhone & sunglasses they told me I'd have to declare & pay the tax on my way back.
I declared it & told them that I had to pay but they waved me through.

I thought the rule for determining whether it needs to be declared is 12 mths of ownership, and it does not say if it is used or not https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/duty-free

However, you do have a duty free allowance of $900 so if it is the only "new" thing, then it would be under the threshold.
I have declared a watch which I purchased at the UK airport but worn it, and they waved it thru.

No idea about rules. I’ve never declared stuff coming back in.

I once declared a camera that I had bought duty free on the way out when I came back in. The customs bloke looked at me as though I had a screw loose and told me not to be ridiculous.

I've heard of super high end camera stuff getting charged on the way back in.

I think the rule of thumb is they start caring when the GST refund more than covers a return trip overseas.

On a similar vein. I bought my brother in law a can of speights and then bought my duty free vodka.

The customs guy sent me to pay the duty and the duty guys laughed and waived me through.
