    Interesting idea k-bird.

Will that fly though? Visa waiver or not if he brings it in I suspect we will still have to front up, even if pre approved.

But just in case I think I am tempted to get it anyway! For $14 it worth the risk!

I'm travelling next month so needed to do it anyway :) Currently it says 72 hours in advance, but I thought I'd better not leave it that late. They've added new questions since last time I did it too.

Even if I wasn't travelling soon I'd consider spending the $14. I wonder what the situation is if they charge you for it, then refuse to honour it because Bozo has signed an executive order overturning it.

Not that I'd be too concerned about my 14 bucks if I suddenly had to sort out an embassy interview in the next 3 weeks.

my own d25 person a is over there at the moment on a J-1 visa for one semester + 30 days
apparently this category of visa can be a pathway to citizenship for some people, don't ask me how
as some of those people are not quite white enough, Donald has promised to abolish this category of visa
expect a downturn in share prices for IT companies in the medium term, and no growth in IT jobs in states that strongly supported Trump

    Wow no J1?

That's crazy! Typically I thought HB ones were more of a pathway than that! They restricted them during the GFC. But J1 seemed unaffected at the time.

so, if they suspend the visa waiver program ( per Sect 9) surely that means that even if you have a valid ESTA you may still be required to undergo the interview process?

This would be a huge PITA for us, as we are planning several visits to the States from Vancouver over the next 2 years. Palm Springs for Modernism week in a few weeks time, NY for jnr LTB's 21st birthday in July, meeting my brother for camping trips with his kids (they live in San Diego)

I must say I'm not completely across Executive Orders, but from what I understand, they pretty much bypass legislative process and take effect immediately (??) First World problem though I guess.

They will need a lot of interviewers. This will kill the tourism industry I reckon. Canada will be happy.

Canada is already pretty happy with big international tourism jump in 2016, BC alone was up 15% or more depending on source of stats. But on the other hand, Canada very concerned with Trump talk of renegotiating NAFTA. Hard to say what advice Trump gets from people with knowledge of the realities of trade. Canada/US trade is massive but essentially balanced, only minor fluctuations in balance from year to year. The degree of integration of the two economies is very deep, so even minor changes would be instantly felt on both sides of the border. I read that 35 of the 50 US states have Canada as their number one destination for exports. PM Trudeau is taking the Trump factor very seriously and did his first cabinet shuffle a fortnight ago with the explicit intention of preparing to face the incoming president.

the main target is Mexico because Trump has identified them as somehow causing US jobs to move south - easier to blame brown people in poor countries than rich white ones in the USA
he has said that he wants bilateral agreements to replace multilateral ones

But he keeps chanting about American jobs. "We'll build our own pipelines. We'll make our own pipes, with American steel." (Meanwhile, their steel production is so depleted they couldn't fill the orders for a couple of years).

The lines are so blurred in the global trading system. Where is a product 'made' anyway? A truck that's assembled in Mexico for sale into US markets has lots of parts made in the US, and of course many others from Asia and other parts of the world. Is it really 'made' in Mexico? Trump is trying to repatriate those assembly line jobs because they're so visible and there's so much emotional baggage attached to them - American cars should be built by Americans, blah blah blah. Personally I think those assembly line guys are mostly overpaid for what they do, 120 K a year for a guy who barely finished high school is unsustainable. There'll be all sorts of legal challenges if Trump tries to legislate corporations into bringing back jobs when there's no business case for it. When the entire administration has virtually no political or legal background, there's bound to be some unsupportable items of legislation produced that will end up being thrown out by the Supreme Court eventually.

The interesting thing is the companies may keep factories in the US but not employ as many unskilled workers(ie the ones who thought Trump would be saving their jobs) due to advances in technology (robotics and manufacturing methods).

The steel industry is an interesting one. The US is still a net exporter of steel(if you don't count steel coming in manufactured goods). Mainly higher quality steel.

We should do the complete opposite.

Make it easier for USA citizens to holiday here than within the USA.

they have a unit in the Abu Dhabi airport processing people pre-arrival in USA - they go on endlessly about it
I guess that's different to their approach to issuing visas

Not if the US makes it harder for Aussies to gain entry. We should offer them similar visa requirements to what they demand of us.

a lot of people fly to Canada via LA.

If a US Visa is now required, that's going to kill off that route.

The Qantas or Air Canada direct to Van, or Cathay via HK will become a lot more busy

They'll either sort their transit situation out to be airside/without US visa or the airlines using that port will be hit by a decline in custom. Given I think there will be an overall 'meh, let's just go elsewhere' for travellers other than the ski transit group, that will be a big hit to airlines, hotels and tourism industry as a whole.

Driving up the price of cars bought by Americans. Not that you'd buy one if the recent Mustang crash test is anything to go by.

Going one step further, I reckon if Trump scraps their carbon emission limits then the rest of the world should impose a carbon tariff on US-manufactured goods. Until that happens I personally would simply boycott anything that announces itself as "made in the USA".

Interesting that when Trump announced he has withdrawn funding to organisations that deal with abortion and contraception in third world countries, a couple of Euro countries have stepped up to fill that gap. Maybe the world can simply get on with it without the US?

I doubt they'll adopt the "stay airside in transit" option that most of the civilised world uses. Since most non-US airlines provide an option for getting to Canada without passing through the US, it's the US airlines that will get hurt. On the plus side, it gives Qantas more incentive to fly direct to Vancouver!

Like for like is a good strategy. With our substantial and contonuing assistance to their military endeavours, we should be looked after.

    I disagree.
Australia is a minnow in world terms, in power and population. We are best served by welcoming the travelling Americans into our home, making their journey here simple, their experience here warm and welcoming and sucking every last US dollar of vacation spending out of the world tourism pot that we can!!

It seems a lot of Trump policy will just isolate the USA which will allow other countries, such as China, to step up and fill the void in the world arena. Trump is just speeding up the demise of the USA and helping China rise to the top. Some interesting years ahead.

It will hurt Trump more if more Yanks spend their holiday dollars here rather in the USA. It is all a cunning plan.

Canada tourist office should be ramping things up already.

Be a few years before I get to ski OS again but I'd head to Canada before the US as a result of this.

Most don't know there's a world outside the US (other than the places the terrorists come from), hence have no need of a passport.
