Airefuego and i set out from dead horse gap early tuesday morning. Had a couple of runs at South Rams Head early. 0-15cm of very light dry snow over a firm base. Made for a weird skiing sensation - somewhere between freshies and skiing groomers. Cloud cleared so we ventured west. Western faces slopes were quite variable but a treat below the tree line. Once down at leatherbarrel we decided to go and ski the twin humps - an area i've been keen on since kieran started a thread on it a couple of seasons back. Unfortunately we missed the sun by about half an hour so the top 20 metres (the really steep bit) was iced up. I found this out after dropping in. After side slipping the top 15 metres or so the snow softened up nicely and the run from there was sensational. Heres the evidence:

Short turns are for pussies. If i had my fat skis i could have gone down in a straight line, jumped the creek at the bottom and been half way back up the other side. Maybe next time.

we skinned back up to the rams head.

it was very tough going up the north-west-facing slope which was heavy and sun affected, the top layer kept sliding off because of the hard rain layer a few inches down. nearly ended up in the creek a few times because the snow wouldn't hold.

    Cheers,

I'm using a 192cm 1999 salomon ski. They are a soft 8 so they have a whole lot of flex but are stiff enough to flick you out of each turn into the next. I enjoy them and thats what its all about.
