I recently posted this on a Mss Snow It All facebook page. The response was overwhelming. Check it out for yourself "Miss Snow It All AU deals & chatter"

"I'm interested in knowing what your thoughts are of people placing skis as a marker point in the lift line.

I was at the Kosciusko chair in Thredbo early the other day. It was well prior to first lifts. I watched a whole bunch of people place their skis and boards in the front of the lift line and walk away. Apparently they went back to their lodge for breakfast. They returned much later and walked past everyone in the line. They then clicked into their skis at the front of the line.

Is this acceptable behaviour or should skis and boards be moved out of the line if they are unattended?"

There was an overwhelming response that this behaviour is not ok. I love Thredbo but this left a bad taste in my mouth. What do you think of this behaviour?

Not ok. Folks should be cooking breakfast in the lift line like civilised human beings.

    It's part of local tradition.
Very, very few if any will 'go back to their lodge for breakfast'
Most stand near the coffee cart and talk crap and drink coffee, or similar.

    When in Rome....

There was a discussion on this in the trip reports thread earlier this year. I think that that you can't come in a big group, dump the skis really early and then all go back to the lodge for breakfast, but a few people who go down to Avalanche for five minutes to get a coffee or go to the toilet should be fine. Its one of those common sense things. Some of these people do it everyday. and it has become a normalised part of the culture for them.

My biggest advice is not to touch anything that doesn't belong to you. Some of these people aren't 100% rational and will cause injury to you and others if you touch their belongings. They really should stand with their skis if they are just standing around, or at least have one person from their group watching over their stuff even if they are watching from the cafe.

What really bugs me is people who show up with new pairs of skis and family members who weren't there to begin with. Thats where I draw the line.

I find it all very civilised. You get up early and you get the reward. This happens in my regular resort in Japan and works a treat. It gives time to do the snow-shovelling and have breakfast instead of standing around in a line.

The unwritten rules that I follow are:
    • bring your own board/skis - don't send one person up with 4 sets
    • no letting latecomers in - they take their place further back in the queue and can catch up to you after the first run
    • if you're not back there when the first lift goes, your board skis get moved out of the queue

Fundamentally is there anything wrong with leaving your skis there?

Clearly first lifts are important to them.

If they are forced to stay, they would still be in front of you and just grumpier.

They do it with the knowledge of risk of damage or theft

I'm not a fan - just the other day somebody posted a pic (Thredbo or Persiher) and this phenomenon was blatantly on display (like the first handful of chairs it seemed) and I remember thinking WTF

    Why

The time would have been around 0700. The lifts aren’t running. You would have to line up behind anyway and the people I know who do it are 10m to the left drinking coffee.

The main complainers I’ve noticed are those that drive up late and complain about the traffic, the lack of parking, then the queue.

Its mostly locals and regulars, and leaving them unattended is not on. People do wander off for a coffee/toilet etc, but someone is always watching, and close by.

I will often be off talking to others, in different rows, or at the back of the pen, or at VT near the coffee cart, my skis stay where I put them.

The reason for the first chair thing is this. Its advanced riders, and we are going to do one or two laps at pace. If you are not an advanced rider you should maybe not do first chairs. Or at least dont complain about people wizzing past. It works pretty well, but we are starting to see more people turning up early, hence the misunderstanding of what is really happening, and why.

Be polite, join in, its a really fun experience, better if you know everyone basically, but I often find myself chatting to people I have not met, all stoking.

to expect to just turn up, and have everyone doing what you think should be happening is niave, some of these people you are bagging have been skiing most days of the season for decades. Have some respect, and join in.

With a young kid avoiding a 15minute scrum in the queue first up in the morning can be the difference between a good day and a bad day. And the fresh groomer canvas is very good for kids confidence to hit runs at pace without crowds. Its well worth getting up a bit earlier.

If the op insists they are unattended maybe she shoould go kick them all.

If they are truly unattended then she won't have a problem.

I think they are attended and she'll get told so immediately.

Op is a hoax just like miss snow it all. Thread is spam.

Cant see the facebook posts in that first post (its a closed group) so no idea how that discussion went.

I do however recall this being talked about here a couple of times and as I said for me I don't think its a good look - but I was talking about the dump and run. Going for a coffee or to the toilet (quickly) is fine as is being there with your gear standing off to the side talking etc. but disappearing for 30 mins to go have breakfast or whatever is not on (at least IMHO).

That pic I posted showed about 30 unattended sets of gear with less than 10 people in seeming proximity (of course they could be off to the side - no idea) so yeah - when I saw it posted in that Thredbo thread I didn't think it looked good.

Sunday morning I drove from Berridale and was still only 4 or 5 rows from the front. I never left one of the cafe benches facing the chair and can say the majority of people who had skis/boards parked in the queue did the same. The talk of people going back to their accommodation is exaggerated to say the least.

I think the first five chairs should be reserved for boarders, with another five left empty before the skiers start, just to even up the first run bragging rights, haha.

Only if they’re able to not be doing skidded turns, otherwise your pretty fresh cord will be all mussed up by the time you get to it.

I have no problem with this as the boarders will still be sitting on the chair off load area doing up their bindings when the skiers arrive and go past them.

Fresh Cord? Are people seriously queuing for first chairs to not ride fresh (and even then it needs to be a decent amount of fresh to motivate me)? TBH I have never understood people doing first tracks etc. if there is no fresh.

Years ago one season I was somewhat motivated so on a pow day would hike up to an (sort of) upper lift for an early chair and it didn't matter if I was 15 mins or an hour before open without fail this Kiwi lass would be first in line. I was always impressed but yeah, 1st chair or 10th - not much of a difference but what was important was having a pow game plan :D

Its not about cord really, its about speed. Traditionally punters dont hit the hill until after 9, so you have a small window to go full pace.

    Fresh days are another thing.

Some days there are four or so early runs before the hill is done for fast, uncrowded, not lumpy, corded skiing. Maybe even less runs.

I’m not as good as I thought I was any more and frankly early cord is a joy to ski and provides ample opportunity for me to believe I’m better than I am. Plus it’s heaps of fun :)

Ahhh OK - I see what you are saying and yes I agree - I freshly groomed run is nice (and safer) if you are talking serious speed. I should take back my comments about first tracks etc. as well - of course there are folks that are happier to get out early regardless (need to finish earlier etc.).

What are things like for Thredbo/Perisher on a big fresh day (like the other week)? I have had a few fresh days at Falls but have never gone out early to partake so no idea if it is carnage etc.
