I didn’t realise this was the place where the gear was being left
    that’s even worse
what kind of person does this?
it’s a bit like at Blue Cow terminal during interschools when people mark a table in the morning with a bag and expect it to be theirs at 3pm
they can get nasty about it too, if anyone dares to occupy ‘their’ space

Perhaps the rule should be that skis and boards can be left unattended provided the boots are still clipped in

Haha, the lines start half an hour earlier. Its changed a fair bit. Lots of punters now froth over fresh. Which is pretty funny too.

One fine snowy day, early chairs. @climberman is a few chairs in front of me with a few other mates. I see them bomb down under the chair. Followed by punters who try to bomb down under the chair, but cant ski soft snow, and bite it, one after another, to much amused cat calling from the chair. All in good humour though.

I hate it mid week at Sun Peaks, wander down to the lift 5 minutes before opening and get first lifts and 12” of fresh, new tracks for the next 3 runs LOL

I dont think anyone agrees with leaving unattended, more the perception of if they really are or not.

The people that get there in time do it and it works through social convention.

Changing that convention won’t get anyone who doesn’t like it closer to first lifts, just standing behind the same people rather than relaxing, coffee in hand.

I can’t believe people get worried by local quirks.

You're a surfer, local 'quirks' only run so far against broader accepted etiquette. And there seems to be a sentiment that only select people (locals WTF) shall enjoy benefits of this 'quirk'. Reads like the ingredients for violence to me, but it's ok if everyone just chillaxes...

I'm not select and I'm not local. I arrive quite early sometimes. What is the difference between me being attached to my skis and sitting 10 metres away having a cup of tea. I could probably do the same thing and lean on the fence but the lifties would probably get upset if it fell over.
Have a look at the pic on the previous page. Looks pretty relaxed to me.

Remember being in the tram line in Jackson on a powder day and a guy rocked up to try and join his mates - "they were holding a spot for me" The locals ripped him a new one - they explained the etiquette as you could leave your skis in the queue and then go get coffee and come back but if your skis weren't in the line you weren't cutting in. This guy told them to eff off and they basically just yelled through the line like a chain message and true enough when he got to the front the guy wouldnt let him on the tram and made him go to the back of the line. He was effing furious but he was warned. It was quite funny. Not sure if you could just leave a bunch of skis alone altogether and come back 1/2 hour later

It'd be such a crap feeling rocking up and queuing behind 10 pairs of empty skis waiting on those lifties. I'd probably be all like...

"hey Sir Francis Bacon, poor form in the Line dude I really hate your (scientific) method yo", &...
"hey Benchetler you draw like a two old dude, you can just huck off", &

    Note: sorry for being repetitive
I typed this out ages ago but got interrupted by last message chats for a week with the better half. Back now - still posting it, coz I spent all that time writing it LOL

    Have you ever done it?
To be fair I’m lucky to be on the 58th chair in thredbo - too much party, not enough ski.

However I have done it in Niseko.
Notably almost every day of the January 3 week early bird access the season before last. And many of those days were not powder days that season. We got 2 runs in before general access (one if you were at the back of the queue on a powder day) - and those 2 immaculate cord runs were exceptional. Perfect pistes, few other riders but those who were with you could really ride/ski. It was probably the only time in resort in January you could really open it up without reservation.

PB and I often went up for our 2 laps, then headed off elsewhere, earned turns outside of resort or did the grocery shopping in town until the hill calmed down after lunch.

Many of the people doing those 2 runs were local staff. 2 good runs, off to work.

Oh I’d agree a POW game plan is a worthwhile investment of your time.

Wow, I thought this was a joke.

All I can say is if skiers and boarders are just going to line up behind a bunch of vacant ski gear in the line then they have nothing to complain about.
Personally Id be walking right past the lot of it to the gate and if any of the dills lining up behind the ski gear complained about it Id offer them a spot in front of me at the gate ahead of all the vacant gear and if they don't take up the offer and move ahead of the vacant gear that's their choice.

That's like some punters reserving tables at the cafe with their gear on the table.
Fk that, people who have their food need a table to eat it and people who don't have their food yet don't need a table.
I just move the shit aside and sit down with my food.
Far as I am concerned if people like them are going to have such little regard for those ahead of them who ordered and waited for their meals then ill have just as much regard for their gear on the table.

Hey @LMB - Yeah have done it (ride fresh cord) plenty of times and as I clarified its nice and all but its not gonna get me queuing for x mins early but that's just me and TBH depending on motivation even a pow day can make me question effort v reward (I can have fun whenever I head out so its not dependent on getting first chairs).

A few seasons ago was in a decent queue (that had been there a while) trying for first chairs when we all saw a huge mob of ski school slaying the fresh (thanks to getting early access to the Gondy) on runs back to our lift - I reckon if any of them had tried to jump the queue there would have been blood on the slopes LOL

I was perfectly chillaxed in the Telos 1 day at our house wave until a charter boat dumped on us and started taking every wave on the inside. You could say that day I was on the locals side. Just saying, the ingredients are there...

One thing that is messing with the early queue is the increasing early car park arrivals. There will be blood soon enough.

worst I encountered was a dad
he even told one of my friends (who doesn’t step back under pressure, ever) ‘god, you’re ugly’ - she’s not, as it happens
ironically a few years later she encountered him at a party in a lodge at Thredbo
he tried to chat her up - his opening line being ‘have we met?’

This is wrong, the skis and boards should be standing up in the snow.

Seems fine to me if they're hanging around within eyeshot, not ok if they've buggered off to get dressed or have a cooked breakfast. Also not ok to let your friends in who rock up half an hour later, or try to cut in if you're the said late person.

Having said that if I rocked up and saw no actual people in a lift line, I know which end I'd probably be heading towards.
