It seems likely spouse and I will be in the USA for a few weeks over Xmas
the offspring will be studying in Georgia, and we might meet up at a ski resort
so we need to know where is best in late December
non-skier spouse will probably need entertainment

Not saying it's "the best", but a good option would be Steamboat. Pretty much the most reliable Coloradan resort in December, plus direct daily flights from Atlanta. Lovely town with lots to do.

Perhaps wait until closer to decide. Nowhere was good late Dec last year.

Most reliable for snow cover are Grand Targhee in Wyoming and Alta in Utah.
Both offer very little off slope entertainment.

person a only has 3 weeks’ break and I think she wants Chrissy in Athens (Georgia, not Greece)
still might work if Leavenworth is on the way to somewhere

Are you planning to fly to Athens first? Best suggestion so far was Steamboat if want to plan ahead.

My daughter went with another family to Big Sky between Christmas and New Years a few years ago. Worked out pretty well in terms of the snow conditions. Not too much to do for a non-skier though unless they are willing to drive an hour to Bozeman or have an interest in nordic skiing. It's a relatively easy drive. But plane fares were quite high. They flew on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Still twice as expensive as during Jan and Feb.

I live in the southeast U.S. Hasn't been worth flying west to ski before the third week of January. During the holidays the big resorts are pretty crowded and relatively expensive.

What type of terrain do you like?

Yeh sorry, I was making a poignant joke about "Christmas in America".

Good luck with your holiday planning. Christmas usually has a decent cover of snow, if a little firm, is crowded for about 10 days and costs more. The period just after NY is usually quiet.

This is probably the most important factor. Crowded, expensive as others have eluded to. And often not a huge cover of snow. CO or UT are both options, SLC has things to do, and Alta/Bird as well as Brighton/Soliltude and Park City are good early season options. Steamboat, as stated earlier, is probably the best early season option in Colorado.

    thanks
unfortunately the timeframe is not ours to choose - it's happening somewhere between 17 December and 7 January
person a has now told me that she would prefer a white Xmas in a ski town over a cold, possibly wet one in Georgia, so that's a bit more flexibility

On average, Vail and Beaver Creek are better bets, but I don't think Breck will be that far behind on average. And like last season, you often get variable snowfall around that period. Ski as late as you can (ie do anything in Georgia or elsewhere first, then ski until you go back to Aus).

Don't forget about Park City as well.

We were at Breck from 27/12 last year. It was busy! Not quite rivalling FV in school holidays, but close. It stayed busy until school went back 2nd week of Jan. Plus there are blackout days until NY. Snow was marginal.

Unfortunately for you, what you experienced was an outlier (for the wrong reason) early season. It is not like that very often at all.

Is your Epic pass one that includes 5 days at Telluride? Not sure what natural snow would be like but it's a bit harder to reach so perhaps not quite as crowded. I would think they work hard to have as much open as possible. Nice town for non-skiers. I bet it's very festive for the holidays. No bargains to be found for lodging though.

Any issues sleeping over 9000 ft?

If you're happy to have Christmas itself in the southeast, then some options open up for flexible, snow-driven 'planning'. That planning need only go as far as choosing a region, and booking flights into a hub city like SLC, Denver, LA, Calgary or Vancouver. Then book a rental vehicle and one hotel night nearish to the airport, end of planning. After that it's a road trip following the best snow. The resorts will be crowded until schools go back after NYE, but you will still find cheap lodging without booking ahead by staying off mountain. Towns 30 minutes from the resort will have empty motel rooms by the score, everything in the northern US and Canada is driven by summer when people travel ten times more than they do in winter. Once the holidays end, you'll find rooms in the resorts for modest prices too. Unless it's a place that goes hard after the Aussie market, January is low season.

Remember snow is not a novelty to north americans like it is to Aussies, they all have to deal with it but most of them don't like it. The only resorts that have busy season in January are in Mexico and the Caribbean. There are deals to be had everywhere in the ski areas because the locals are all hunkered down trying to stay warm and pay off their credit cards after Christmas excesses.

Well, not quite all North Americans are used to snow. Perhaps all Canadians. For folks who live in the south, whether the southeast, Texas, or the southwest, it's big news when it snows over an inch (2 cm). A prediction of more than 3 inches (5 cm) means the grocery shelves quickly are emptied of bread and milk. One reason the ski areas in North Carolina are so crowded is that there are families who drive once a year from Florida, Georgia, or other states south of Virginia and Tennessee to for a ski weekend. They drive 4-10 hours for 2 days of fun in the manmade snow.

Given that Jan. 1 is a Tuesday, many schools won't start up again until Jan. 7. The empty week will be Jan. 7-13.

Agree that picking an airport and booking flights only is a reasonable option. But also worth considering booking more comfortable lodging than a cheap motel that has a good cancellation policy as a backup plan. Especially with a non-skier in the family.

If you're somewhere that markets extensively to aussies, like Big White, Sun Peaks, Silver Star, Whistler, Banff area, then yes January stays busy. Not the status quo at a lot of other resorts though.

It was busy with Americans. School doesn’t go back until 2nd week of Jan. it was much quieter mid week after that. Weekends picked up again as did the holiday weekends (Presidents’ Day?). Nothing to do with Aussies.

We spent New Year at Aspen a couple of years ago. Actually stayed in Snowmass.
No lift lines whatsoever. No crowds on the slopes but getting a table in a restaurant was another matter - it was essential to book.
I can't imagine how quiet that place would be in the middle of January.

I spent the last week of 2016 in Park City. Great early season skiing, and I imagine one of the better US resorts for a non skier...and easy connections to SLC and then a one hour shuttle.

I've been there a few times and enjoy it every time. Nice historic main street with plenty of Apre choices. Stayed in cheap historic Chateau Apre every time, a 10 minute walk from the lift base.

A huge area now by US standards with The Canyons part of the lift system. Deer Valley 10 minutes bus away. Get a car and all within an hour drive are Snowbird, Alta, Solitude, Brighton, Snowbasin, Powder Mountain, Sundance. What's not to like ?
