    Hi guys,

I'm thinking of visiting Perisher on the 22nd Sep weekend. Just wondering what's the usual conditions for the snow during that time? I've never visited the snow towards the end of the season so just wondering what conditions should I be expecting, and if it's worthwhile to go. Many thanks!

Seasons vary greatly over the last decade or so, so it's tough to predict.

This year, however, you're in luck. There will be snow, and quite a bit of it, provided we don't have 2 weeks of biblical rain events in mid-Sep.

At a guess, you should expect Blue Cow and Guthega to be closed by then, and probably Smiggins as well, but there will be great skiing at Perisher and Mt P.

There will be a few rocks off the main runs, but if you stick to the groomed you will have a ball in the slush.

Also, if this season keeps going like it is, late Sep can be a fabulous time to ski with no crowds, loads of snow cover, and glorious spring snow to revel in.

September is great, go have fun in it.

Great! Many thanks for your reply! I understand that it is hard to predict the weather as usually the snow condition should be great for first week of August however that didn't seem to be the case when I went few weeks ago. But at least there is chance that it won't be a complete waste of time :)

    Cheers

Welcome aboard @oz-eh :) I will arrive there on the same day. As @Undies said blue cow and guthega will more than likely be closed and probably Smiggin Holes as well. Expect anything from seven to fourteen lifts to be open. It doesn't sound like much but the way this season has played out, us leftovers junkies have hit the jackpot.

    Glass half full I say:cheers:

    Guthega will be closed.
    30/35 lifts.

Is that the good oil? Let's see how I go with blue cow. My pass is valid after 12pm on the 22nd. I would say that might be the last day for that area. Please tell me I'm wrong.

I did my ankle 27th Sept last year.
We rode smiggs. Perisher and BC that day.
Was a epic day of soft fresh creamy pow...

Not planned to be at this stage, but I might be able to get a pass for a quick trip if I get a couple of projects finished.

Ozeh last year we didn't go in Sept, and the Blue cow was extend close to the 30th. I expect the same this year. Watch the weather, this year, the cover is better and they are hard packing it down to keep it fresh, hence the grooming today.
We are there from 22/9 to 30/9 as family and I am in the valley until 8/10 the home. I expect that Smiggs and Guthega will be gone by 27 Sep and Blue cow may hold a little longer. It will depend on next weeks snow and the snow in the middle of Sept. It appears Sept will continue to be snowy in the hills and we may get some good skiing in..

We did ski 20.6 this year and shortly after they had 32 lifts. I was lucky enough to be the first for the year on Ridge after they built the run proper. it was great. So I could be lucky twice..

Perisher (and Thredbo) is a long way from Sydney, but still in the same state, NSW.

In Victoria, the state that Melbourne is in, there are also Falls Creek and Mt Hotham. These are further from Melbourne but likely to have more snow at end September. Lake Mountain in particular is very risky. Melbourne to Falls Creek or Hotham is shorter than Sydney to Perisher or Thredbo.

Do you already ski or is this your first time?

Thank you so much for ur prompt reply n good advice! Then I shall book flight to Melbourne n can decide later which ski resort to go to.

I skied before but am a novice. This time I would like to take beginner’s lesson to snowboard. So probably I don’t need heavy snow since I will just be at the beginners slope. Location accessiblity will be more important for me. Thank you

Typically, Perisher in NSW holds snow longest. It is higher than the Victorian resorts.

If you go to Perisher or Thredbo, it may suit you to fly in to Canberra. Then either organise a bus, or rent a car, to drive to the ski slopes. Still a 2 1/2 hour drive, though.

@Andrea Li If accessibility to the slopes is the main priority, Singapore Airlines fly directly to Canberra. From here you have quick access to Perisher and Thredbo. Around two and a half hours drive you can be on snow.

Directly to Canberra from Singapore .. with a technical stop in Sydney. Direct flights back from Canberra to Singapore, though. Perisher will have plenty of snow left towards the end of September. I cannot comment on the Victorian resorts.

It didn’t use to be. Now: Singapore - Sydney - Canberra. Same plane. Then return is direct Canberra to Singapore.

Looking at Sept 23-27th as well..

What say the experts? reckon BC will still be open? I am going with my 2 sons who are intermediate and I have switched to skiing this year so I am only intermediate as well. While I don't expect places like Olympic to be open the other places like Mt P, Sun Valley ect should all be still okay cover?

    Thanks

23-27th for me as well. It's been suggested that Blue Cow may still be open. At least for the 23rd and maybe the same for Smiggins. No an issue of quality of cover but rather the progressive shut down of the place. It is the final week of normal operations after all.

Sun Valley is usually open last day of the season, though the tbar might not be operating. I reckon BC will stay open until late September. Mt P will be open. *disclaimer - barring any huge rain events.

Hasn't the season been extended to 7/10?

Do they discount the lift tickets as they close down parts of the resort?

Prices do generally drop. But nothing to get too excited about. The bring a mate tix for later in Sept are a good price.

In recent years Perisher have not dropped their prices towards the end of the season. Blue Cow was open until late September last year but in previous years (amidst much outcry) Perisher tended to close BC in mid-September.

I don't know if they still do it, but Perisher used to sell a spring "season" pass for September to the end of the season. It used to be 3-ish day tickets. They never advertised it. You had to know and ask. So maybe ask.

Note that I said "normal" operations. The dates on when to start shutting the place down would have been decided long before the announced extension.
