Burning season seems to have begun. Won't be much in our geological record around here but a big black line. There's mounting evidence that torching the forests as frequently as we do is detrimental to fuel loads settling over time, and the environment as a whole in terms of bio-mass and diversity. Yet onwards we go. I don't remember waking up to smoke haze in Perth when I was younger.

I do.
But not as much unless it was a bushfire.

Certainly saw plenty of fires when I was younger, when you're fishing off the coast on a boat they're easy to spot. It rained ash at our place from a blaze in Bold Park too. The phenomenon of routinely pulling clothes off the line in Perth and having them smell like a bushfire is pretty recent though.

It's going to be a hot week by looks of it

Might take off Friday arvo from work, grab the boy from school and go throw a swag on the beach for the night if these low winds predicted come through

What are we seeing for coastal wind Friday / Saturday?

I thought the universe was being kind to me seeing as I am unable to avoid summer this year.

But here we are with a 39 degree day!

Coldest December day since at least 1957 ( digitised records ) in Fitzroy Crossing today 25.8c and unless there is a temp spike between now and 9.00am tomorrow morning this will be the new record low.
Also 70 odd mm rain in the last few days with the gurus saying it is the onset of the Northern Monsoon.
Zilch in Darwin atm, although we expect increasing rain by the weekend.

It hit almost 41 in some parts of Perth yesterday. Fortunately I missed the bulk of it by getting to the office at 6.30am and not leaving til 7.30pm. Quite pleasant at those times

I was driving home at lunchtime. It was hideous. My car has cracking good Air conditioning, but it was still hideous. I’m thinking back to my old Gemini with a fan and wind down windows - the drivers window broke and got stuck UP....how did we survive hot days pre air con?! Weak nowadays - weak I tell ya.

I remember when I got the windows tinted in my first car, a 1978 Ford Escort - I wasnt allowed to wind the windows down for two days to let the tinting dry/stick. It was a super hot day, with a fan the strength of an asthmatic mouse. Every time we stopped at traffic lighte etc, we had to open the doors and hang our heads out LOL

Next system delivering up there. Reckon Lombadina & nearby Cygnet Bay might go close to a 1000mm for the month at this rate, which is damn phenomenal.

Meanwhile the south is demonstrating why December & January are the shittest months of weather by far in southern WA. Non-stop dessicating winds, flat white light, flies, Christmas. If the wind does pause for split second, direct teleport to surface of the sun.

We had nice soft Spring this year. Was green up until recently. Then the wind came.

lots of people will tell you how much they just love hot weather, from their airconditioned location

Most people who tell me they like hot weather are fat greasy bastards who never voluntarily raise their heart rate.

Come work with me for a day in the relentless sun, if they survive, they'll probably try to move to Iceland.

I saw the forecast today for Roebourne was 45c, but only made it to 41c
Tomorrow is the anniversary of the 49.4c in 2011. Hottest day I've ever been in. We were trying to do Cyclone tie down for the Xmas break, but it was pretty much unbearable after 11.00am and most knocked off at 1 ish.....

More heat forecast: 37,38,40,40 for the next 4 days. It’s been sustained gusty easterlies with no sea breezes for days now. Unusual.

Unusual and horrid.
Thank goodness for aircon!
I’m hibernating.

Perfect demonstration of why Nov to first half of March is the most shit time of year in WA. Not unusual, we’ve just had a couple of softer summers preceding.

I’m south, but still relentless blue sky, wind & heat. Working outside in it, trying to follow shade, but not always possible,

Have some peak risk components today, standing up in dead canopy of old unstable trees & sending down huge multiple tonne sections. The sun feels no colder when doing Hail Mary’s!!

I think it is unusual to have such a long run of days in Perth without a sea breeze, especially this early in summer.

We’ve been surrounded all week. Lots of extended power outages but with a pool and beach we dare not complain. At one stage our plan was to drive the beach south to ledge.

never seen so much Easterlies non stop in my years

firies have worked their asses off , massive thanks to them

c130 and other water bombers have been buzzing above all week, kids wave from beach or pool

My like isn’t really a “like”.
Bloody fires.
The heat, roaring Easterlies, and lack of precipitation is not helping.

Massive stat:

Was eyeing this pattern a week or so back thinking that looks real nasty, trough sitting a long way offshore.

'Finger of satan' I think the technical term is for this synoptic. The 'urban heat island' would be in full affect tonight over the metro.

Total Fire Ban across pretty much the whole south west today. Had already decided to stand jobs down due to the added risk, but the TFB's confirmed was a good decision. Really need a decent tropical system to help take some steam out the current bastard pattern embedded over WA.

Discussing with partner this evening, we think people that say they like the heat are generally less active, 'inside' people.

The current 35C+ at Cape Leeuwin is a hugely telling stat.

Sitting out on it's granite throne surrounded by sharks, huge waves & abalone, the air con generally works well there. 25C is usually a 'hot day', almost always 10 degrees cooler than stations just to north.

Not today. Air over ocean is on fire.

It’s pretty hideous.

My car was reading 35 at 9am.

Popped into Kmart and bought a blow up kids pool to stick out on the deck under shade for the kids coming to stay for a week. They’re Albany kids - can you imagine? They’ll MELT!
