I'm heading off to Thredbo in august, and was considering renting a pair of snowshoes and walking to Kosciuszko peak if weather permits.

My question is, is it worthwhile lugging my snowboard with me to ride (at least some of the way) back?

Well you'll be able to ride from Kosi down to rawsons pass or so
Thats not that far in KM of the total trip. Maybe 5%.
The rest is undulating until you get to the last little slide into thredbo.
But yeah i'd take my board. If youre going to snowshoe it out there. Why not.

Take it. You can run down to Cootapatamba shoe it up, then a run down to the track, shoe it up to Kosi lookout, then a run down to the top of Thredbo, then down through the resort. You can get a few runs on the way up too. If Im up there Ill show you if you like. Gotta help my poor sandgroper cousins when they make it over. If you are reasonably fit it makes a good arvo trip after having the best of the resort in the morning.

Even in the worst seasons on record there was snow on Kosi. The resorts are on the fringe of the range, it gets deeper and steeper out there.

yeh dude i walked it last season, on the last day of season...still plenty of snow, and there is a massive bowl and drop off to the left of the summit, maybe a 5-10 walk from the top....we had drops off's of between 2 and 20 metres and everything in between....ABSOLUTLY UNREAL experience

    TAKE YOUR BOARD
