Another cold night (-8C). A bit of cloud around this morning but that has already started clearing. Have to get out and do it again.

Sunday August 7 - Triple Peak

As suggested earlier all the elements were in place for a good day. Today we had Whitney guiding. He opted to start back where we found the good snow yesterday on Triple Peak. The snow was in the same great condition with the bonus today that we had clear visibility to go with it. So a great start. Did a repeat then ventured further out to see what else was out there.

Flew out to Muldoons where we encountered some of the rime crust we had the previous day, still reasonable but we knew we could do better. So headed back to Never you mind where we found the good stuff again. Repeated that then skied Tony's chutes to lunch.

Back to Triple, then to Peepees facing the valley which was also amazing, so much so we had to ski it 3 times. Then finished off with a couple of runs on Fringe Dwellers in the sun. Skied the first one non stop top to bottom - though slowed up at the end.

An amazingly consistent quality snow day. Apart from the bit of rime crust on Muldoons everything was a light 30-40cm powder.

An excellent day for my 200th.

Monday August 8 - North Buchanans

Bit of cloud around early but that mostly cleared. Decision was whether to go into the Buchanans where we knew it was good or see what it was like in the Harris. Laetitia decided to opt for the known quantity and ultimately I think it was the right call.

Started off with a coupe of runs on Moliefies which was great before the last storm and was even better now. We took a different variation taking a line further skiers left which gave us a long run. A great start.
And with these runs Stewart reached his 2 million vertical feet with HMH.

Went then to Penstock where we found some more rime crust, then Chamois basin also crusty up high but getting much better lower down. Repeated that from a lower landing to skip the worst of the crust. Had lunch on A-trails, then Laetitia took us to an unnamed run sort of below Stag saddle heading to underneath a waterfall under the valley from Penstock. Was interesting in that an area in the vicinity of A-trails that we ski very frequently there were aspects that were rarely skied. Was certainly a worthwhile run with a good view of a running waterfall.

Then it was time to finish back on Moliefes where we started for the last couple of runs where we knew it was good. But again Laetitia found an interesting variation for fresh lines.

Another great day. Feeling a bit sore though this evening.

Hey @Heinz are you flying tomorrow? I'm heading up with Harris Mountains for my first time heli-boarding. If the weather is anything like today it's going to be epic.

Yeah, feeling a bit sore after the last 3 days and an awesome day today on Craigroyston in the North Harris, but I should be out there somewhere again tomorrow. Conditions are excellent at the moment and I'm hearing the weather is meant to be fine again tomorrow so you should be in for a great day.

The main thing they are wary of at the moment are runs that have a bit of rime crust, but they now have a pretty good idea which runs have that and which ones are good powder so you should be able to mostly avoid the rime crust, not that they are even that bad. It is not quite Japan like powder but it is pretty good and the terrain and views are amazing.

Today they had 7 machines running between Wanaka, Queenstown & Mt Cook including a couple charters. So don't know if we will be on the same machine or not. If not we normally have a quick one in the Alehouse just near the office after we get back from skiing.

Returned from 4 days of great hut based touring on the Pisa Range, varied snow out there but as already mentioned on the right aspects and altitudes some good powder remained. Some very chilly nights spent out with apparent temps dropping to well below -15, only one cloudy day, amazing blue bird day on the ski out to snow farm. Thanks again Wanaka an NZ for turning on the goods.

Glorious looking day in town after another yet another good frost. In the mountains though the wind had made a return and forced a change of plan. Went to where we knew there would be slightly less wind and snow was good, got our runs in before returning to the valley for lunch.

Do they roll the carpet right from the airport or just from your accom to the helipad?

Whenever I'm going in a chopper get so excited I need to go the toilet, even if it's for work. Do you still get that after that many days heli-skiing Heinz (the excitement, not the toiling bit)?

Tuesday August 9 - North Harris

Another fine, calm day and finally a chance to ski in the Harris. Were with Whitney today and his plan was to head to Craigroyston. Started off on Rollercoaster. Encountered a bit of the rime crust on the first run, then tried another line which was powder. Able to get quite low down and the terrain in Rollercoaster is always cruisy fun, so we did a quick rerun.

Moved to Craigroyston and first run was down right side - a nice long run to valley floor in great snow, so followed up with a similar line. Then after lunch skied one of the chutes on Holy Moses which was awesome - nice powder all the way down. Had skied one of these many years ago when it was breakable crust - not so much fun - the problem with these is once you are in you are committed.

Then another nice steep unnamed run in the vicinity, also great snow all the way. Then dropped into a run just below Sharkstooth peak which was ok but just a bit rimey so we headed back to CraigRoyston and did a cruisy line on Holy Moses. Finished with another run on Rollercoaster on the way home getting quite a long way down, almost but just not quite good enough cover to make valley floor.

    Very happy with that day.

Wednesday August 10 - South Buchanans

Yet another clear calm day. Went to the South Buchanans with Mark guiding. The South Buchanans are the mountains you see looking when looking slightly right from the Wanaka lakefront. Hence from the peaks there are good views of Lake Wanaka and the town.

Was a day with a vast array of different snow conditions and an eventfull day for me.

First run was on The Gods which was quite bizarre. When we flew in it had a glazed look to it. Looked like it was warmed in the sun the previous day and overnight a thin 1mm layer of ice formed. So when we skied it the ice layer just shattered into small pieces and rained down very noisily alongside when you skied. Underneath was powder so it skied perfectly fine, but the effect was quite bizarre. I vaguely recall once having something similar once in the past. There is actually a run called Breaking Glass in the Central Harris which I imagine would have been named for this same effect.

Next run was Lake run which has fantastic lake and town views. The skiing didn't quite match the views however as it was mostly rime crust again. Finished up on a small snow covered lake/swamp.

Then to a run called Great Expectations which did look really good from the air, but didn't really deliver as it was quite crusty all the way down and didn't improve lower down either.

So then it was time to have a look at Alta the highest peak in the South Buchanans. For Mark if was a return to the scene of the helicopter crash almost exactly 2 years ago. We went first for the sunny north face, had to carefully step through about 20m of barely covered rock but once through it was a nice long run of creamy spring snow. Was very warm at the bottom.

Went back to the top of Alta and skied a couple of runs on the other shady side through the chutes. So it was back to powder again. Though at the top of the first run some of the surface snow sloughed off and I went to a bit of a slide on the icy layer underneath. Was all good though after that.

Then skied another sunny aspect on the northwest side. Once again very nice spring type skiing most of the way down apart from a gully near the bottom where the sun had overcooked the snow and I got caught in a wet snow slough which dragged me down a few metres.

On the way back to the valley we dropped into Peepees where we knew there would be powder again which it was. As we got down further looking for a lower pickup the coverage was a bit hollow - 20 cms of snow sometimes on top of bushes. I skied over one of these and dropped into one of these holes. At the end of that I was done for the day.

Thursday August 11 - North Buchanans

6th consecutive day. Looked like another fine day and Mark's original plan was to head to the North Harris. But on the drive up the valley word from Hugh on the charter also looking to ski in the North Harris said that the wind was too strong to land there. So after nearly a week of no wind it had returned.

So this forced a change of plan as we headed for the Buchanans. Tried to land on Triple peak but was also too windy there. So then went for old reliable - A-trails where we knew it was more sheltered from the wind and the snow would be good. Though as our pilot Phil flew in it was clear the wind was still quite significant on the ridge and it wouldn't have surprised us if he decided to bail from there also at any stage. We figured then to just keep skiing while we could and think about lunch later.
A-trails delivered again as it nearly always does with great powder without wind affect although wind was gusting periodically. Did 4 different variations finding fresh lines each time.

Then returned to Peepees where we also knew it would be good - wind was gusting but Phil as still happy to land, so we were able to ski 3 runs there to get our runs in. Snow was still in very good shape although the wind was starting to stiffen it.

Headed down to a hill above the valley for lunch - an early 1pm finish.

Had a good time. I did 7 runs but on my 5 I got hit from behind by one of the other riders and hurt my shin and left shoulder so the rest of my runs I was a bit tender.

Saturday August 13 - Tyndall glacier region

Last day of the trip. There was an inversion layer over the town but word was it was clear out to the north west. Also factored in that there may have been a few cms of snow after the recent windy conditions, so they thought the glaciers would be a good option. Plus the fact that I hadn't been out there this season.

Had Anna guiding today. A longish drive out to Raspberry creek at the end of the Matuki west road. From there flew up to the Isobel glacier. This was on a sunny aspect on wind affected snow but skied reasonably well. The setting out there is pretty amazing though, so just great to be out there. Did a rerun in there and by then the snow has softened in the sun a little so was even better.

Then went to Anstead glacier for a couple of runs on shady aspects, so we had mostly powder - great at the top, a little wind affected lower down but still good. Then a variation of Isobel in the sun down to a snow covered lake for lunch which was quite nice.

Then to Headlong glacier and more powder and some impressive ice falls at the bottom. Finally onto the Tyndall glacier for a line in the sun which was nice powder which was probably as good as I have had from my previous runs on the Tyndall.

So a very pleasant way to finish the trip.

On the way home we dropped off one of the guys who was working at the new restaurant at the Rippon vineyards, so we stopped for a quick look. Quite impressive setup and nice view of the lake and Ruby island.

Loving the reports and pics and very glad you got rid of the very blue cast on the newer pics (did you have the wrong setting on the camera?)
