After a casual start @skifree and I picked up the car and drove to Yubari to check out Mt Racey. The blizzard closed the top half of the hill with only the bottom double and quad open.

The fresh snow was heavy but reasonably dry and if you looked in the right spot you could find some knee deep snow. We had a great afternoon getting our ski legs back. When the double closed due to the wind we called it a day. The big decision for tomorrow will be to ski here in the morning or just move onto Furano.

Strange Hotel bear, he seems sad to be eating the chick / egg?

FYI, it looks to me that, apart from snow tonight & a burst of snow on 2nd/3rd, it looks lean for powder past the 10th March, so if that was me, I'd skiing powder early, and driving later.

We woke up to clear skies, no wind and about 10 cm of dry snow ontop of yesterday's wet snow. With the gondola running and the whole hill open to check out we decided to stay for the morning.

The start to the day was delayed a bit when I discovered a note on the windscreen in Japanese and a Hokkaido Police business card. I guessed I had parked in the wrong spot and the message was asking me to front at the Police Station. I asked the hotel reception to help and in about 10 min later there were two very polite cops and a massive language barrier. We stumbled through documentation until a young man appeared who apologised for hitting the hire car. He had told the cops, told the hire company and his insurers. We couldn't find a mark on the car. Nice to get interacting with Japanese police off the bucket list.

Mt Racey is a great little hill, it has a strong race culture in both ski and SB hard boots. The steep run is steep, the trees are really tight and most of them lead to terrain traps. The snow was odd, about 10cm of wet dense show with about 10cm of light snow ontop. The groomers would also just give away with too much edge.

I rate Mt Racey and I could easily spend a few cruisey days skiing and soaking in the onsen. We're now in Furano for a few days.

In Furano now. Work got in the way for both of us this morning. We finally escaped at lunch time so we had a meal of soup curry which included a grilled chicken maryland! After lunch we explored for a bit, @skifree fell over in the snow and we found the nordic trails.

We dropped in on @telenomore and his some classic gear and explored the trails in Asahigoaka Park. We skied to the to of a hill, went off piste exploring a series of statues and monuments and saw some pretty views of Furano resort, town and dake.

We caught that same watermelon dog (as we call it) from a claw machine on our first trip back in 2009. Is it a regional mascot?

By the way, I think more Australian should visit Mount Racey ski resort or buy Yubari Melon for a reason:p. Yubari city is very famous as a "bankrupt city". I mean, coal mining was the only industry for Yubari. But cheap coals came from Australia and all coal mines in Yubari were closed. Look at the image below, 72% coals in Japan are imported from Australia now(オーストラリア = Australia).

    About Yubari city : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yūbari,_Hokkaido

Last year, the only local train to Yubari stopped running because population has shrunk a lot since coal mines were closed. Now, Yubari city has only two industry = ski resort and the expensive yummy Yubari melon(Yubari melon is very famous and popular, so the city made the mascot Melon Bear).
