General information about Whaka/Turoa, such as...

Why aren't all the lifts running at Whaka?
Chains seem to be often required for 2wd?
    Best time to ski there?

The week of skiing was really Shutapehu (Shutapapa/Shutaroa). If it wasn't an issue with the wind it was an issue with the icing and riming of the lifts. As such, we had limited skiing for 5 of the 7 days. How can you ski fresh powder/snow (60cms), especially in the morning, if the lifts are shut due to icing/riming? So, the nice fresh powder/snow just sits there and gets wind, wet, or rain affected then the fresh powder/snow is all gone and unskied! We have another week coming so hopefully it will be good!

Sounds about typical KL. Best to ski there in late august/sept

Otherwise, head to the southern alps

epic couple of bluebird weeks now since the e.Aug blizzard, all on to low elev,

Legoland sweet yesterday; east over the pinnacles
    [IMG]

    lateJuly is too early there,
the sweet spots seem to be m.Aug for winter conds, Sept can get too much equinox NW wind, and then Oct for real Spring

Been looking at Papa & Turoa this week and essentially both have closed this week (Mon-Fri/5 days) due to wind even though they have received about +50cms (+40cms on one day) of snow since Sunday! I would say that the nice fresh snow that has fallen would have been beaten to death (wind, etc affected) and when they are finally open I guess its back to spring style snow (which is still nice) and the fresh snow was (probably) never skied! Definitely, Shutapapa/Shutaroa this week :)

Sadly that is too common an occurrence at Mt Ruapehu.

I remember during my first visit in the early 90's asking Ski Patrol why we couldn't ski one clear morning (in late October) and he said the surface was "bulletproof".

If people ask me what Mt Ruapehu is like I always say "The unpredictable weather is the worst part and you need to expect multiple closed days in a week, but when the sun shines there is no place like it".

I also say, best not to try to book a holiday in advance travelling fro Oz!

curious what a 2800m volcano at 39 lat facing the Tasman sea will do in the weather ...

... but this week will be epic, all fine.

Really, another day of Papa & Turoa being closed! That is 6 days of continuous closure! Turoa seems to have picked up the best of the snowfall!

Just saying as it is! Not into fishing or MTBing in the mud. Could hike but I can do that anywhere, Really!

Turoa, today, should be very good but the temps are now 6.0°C, so all the nice snow snow of the last 5/6 days, should be slush by the afternoon. That appears to be the nature of Papa & Turoa...

One September tried cheapest 7 day run to Turoa from Oz (big snowfall)..
Thought that I had outsmarted myself, like the time I headed late to Wolf Creek from Denver
Turoa without chains , crazy risky.
Two bluebird days, and lucky to get them.
Locals climb one hour (1500 feet) past the lifts, but only when lifts close.
Snow is nicely frozen up there..
