The extremely helpful Japanese people. I don't think anywhere else in the world has the consistently high level of service that you find in Japan. Just a few examples from our recent trip -

    - A number of strangers asking if we needed help on the streets and in the subways.
    - Accommodation owners going out of their way to pick us up from train stations. In one case even borrowing a large van so they could carry us and all our luggage, and never once expecting any extra payment for the service.
    - Hotel owner taking us to a bus station and waiting to make sure we safely got on the right bus.
    - A Hotel employee from accommodation we didn't even stay at running down the road chasing a bus to make sure it didn't leave without us.
    - Owners driving us to an ATM.
    - Learning English so they could better communicate with us.
    - Preparing special meals just for our children
    - We were given numerous free little gifts from shops and restaurants.
    - Old ladies standing up on trains offering their seats to our little children. I felt very uncomfortably with this and I tried my best to get them to sit back down.
    - Hotel owners driving for more than an hour just to buy us a special parting gift that they knew we would appreciate.
    - Ski resort staff giving extra help to our two young kids on the lifts and when tubing/sledding.
    - 7-Eleven staff member, realising we were running late for our train going super fast to help us out the door so we could make our train.

I'm sure there's more but I don't want to fill the page up.

Yes with out a doubt the generosity of the Japanese is amazing.
Our hotel owner in Hakuba took us to the bus stop the 1st day after the snow storm when the roads were open again.
There was about 200 people lined up for the bus to Nagano. He drove straight past the line and drove us to Nagano.
    So much gratitude.

I know people say that about the japanese, including a friend who lived there for about 10 years, but I think it's really just extremely good manners as a matter of principle - and they do it so well

So many things that I like in this thread! I'm already planning our trip back next year. Going to be even longer and even better than the last two trips!

    -Weird japanese TV
-Drinking in little bars and making friends over their broken english and my broken Japanese
-Crazy driving antics where people give way when they really shouldnt...
-Cheap fresh amazing food (never a bad meal in Japan)
    -Vending machine beer
    -Pocari sweat (great for hangovers)
-Clean toilets and streets and parks
-Everything runs on time without even thinking about it
-The awesome sneaker and toy shopping in Tokyo

I could go on and on :)

The people, so friendly and polite. Lost our camera in tokyo, back 30 minutes later to find it handed in to staff.
Awesome strawberries that look too good to eat and taste even better, when bought from market wrapped in lovely package.
Japanese bakery, sweet and savory to die for.
    Super efficient transport service
Many small family run restaurants that serve wonderful food
    And of course the snow!

    - Fish & chips, just in the paper, eaten by hand (Although again, there another pub that sells a very good sit down f&ch)

I like how money is exchanged in shops. The notes and coins are "offered" separately so we're not fumbling around trying to stuff coin and notes away at the same time. So......civilised!

The things I WOULD miss about Japan, after leaving:
    - The general craziness, everything from dressed dog in strollers, saying a green traffic light is blue, the crazy "English" T-shirts, girls saying strange things like "do you have a sex friend?", bad translations, the Japanese fashions, Shibuya,
    - Vending machines -like how come a bottle of Coke is 150yen or less (about $160), but it's $3.50 in Australia?
    - The transportation system - Train ticketing, efficiency, frequency, how it links
    - The ease of things to do. - In Australian cities, you often go out in the car, but you usually have a destination. In Tokyo & Yokohama, I generally just jump on the train and see where it takes me.
    - Cheap eat out food and its quality
    - The service - so good!
    - The short shorts, and then the shorts and long boots in winter. And also the "underwear" shorts in summer!! And how generally well dressed most people. No trackie dacks and fluffy slippers.
    - Not just the politeness, but the quaint way people behave..... Like those tiny little bows the girls do in the office when they are discussing things. And also they way some people run in the office.... e.g. to the photocopier & back.
    - I'll think of more.....

    What I wouldn't miss:
    - The complete lack of organisation when walking
    - bureaucracy
    - Bicycle riders riding out of side streets without looking, trying to kill themselves underneath my car.

Oh, Yes, Yes, Yes. How I hate being given coins on top of notes, which means you need to put them down again so notes go in wallet and coins in pocket.

It was so seamless in Japan that I didn't notice at the time, but you are absolutely right.
