Lots of iron in beer? It is a similar colour to rusty iron.

New approach. Modern post public liability / risk averse society. If I post a map that shows routes to the Fainters, and someone hurts themselves......

Fark all that. If it were me I would take the track out from Turntable Creek near Howmans Gap then go west/north west up onto the Fainter track.

There is a track off to the right just before the road from Bright descends to Tawonga. Does it go anywhere?

To a lookout and then a road closed sign last time I was there - couple of years ago I think.

I sniffed around for the same reason as you I expect: possibly an easier route up.

FWIW the lookout is not far up from the Tawonga Gap road and well worth a diversion. Gives a great view of Bogong, Mt Beauty and the valley. The road is a bit rocky though so if you were fanging up to the Gap on two road wheels give the tyres some time to cool down first.

Best Fainter access IMHO is to park at Bogong Village (probably on the highway) catch Pyles Bus to Falls CK, ski around and walk back down to the car. You need to book the bus in advance. This is a committing trip so you need to know what you are doing.

BTW Pyles is now Falls Creek Coaches.

Don't think they run in summer but they and the Mt Beauty taxi can provide a custom ride.

So back to the original topic thread......you cannot drive to Big Hill from just past Mount Beauty in winter to access the Fainters by Bogon Jack Saddle correct???

That road is private access to the McKay Ck PS and is usually gated so you'd be walking and you might encounter some opposition.

John K: access to Big Hill is closed in winter.

This is from somewhere along the road, after Howman's, prior to FC village.... looking at Fainters Eastern side... I think.

Big Hill Rd is open Big Hill Look Out... then West Kiewa Logging is closed at barrier which is locked and track to Big Hill Fire Tower is also locked....Its the West KLRd that u need to travel along for 6km till u get to Spring Saddle Turn Off Track that also has a gate....

if u can Mt Bike along WKLRd to the Spring Saddle Turn off (approx. six kms)this will greatly help u to access the Fainters...

Road to Big Hill Lookout is open but trees can fall so a chainsaw would be desirable if u leave a car up there..u can leave the car in a relative safety as its an open area well away from over head branches up there....

Now Big Hill Lookout is not the same as Big Hill Fire Tower........I would not continue past Big Hill Fire Tower to the Spring Saddle as it goes up then down and u just waste energy needlessly....

Otherwise its a steep climb towards Spring Saddle(well 300meters East of it ) from Bogong Village Area...

A trail bike may be an option past the barrier...illegal but a possibility.....

once u gain Spring Saddle its pretty easy moderate incline jeep track till Bogong Saddle and protected from any prevailing westerlies the whole way...Bogong Jack Saddle has a very small hut but it would keep u out of weather while u have a meal/rest.....

should still be there ...Team Bears aint been there for 12mths or so as West Kiewa Logging Rd got closed off a year ago when they had a slip ....but previously we did our best to make it some what warmer with panels and insulation in ceiling and all walls..its very old and floor joist is nearly cactus but its a good refuge to get out of weather no pot belly up there but a shellite or gas stove would make it warm pretty fast just on its own....

the fire track is basically free of vegetation so its a pretty easy/pleasant walk/ski/snow shoe...

hopefully the door is still on and the window intact.....

US description is 100% correct. This route is hours quicker than going up from Bogong especially if you ride a mtb to the saddle springs turn off. If there is minimal snow at this point take it further as you will at least be able to roll back on the way home.

Tawonga Gap to Fainters isn't a goer I think. I'll check again while I'm up here but last time the T Gap tk had a temporary road closed sign at the Gap end. And in any case it needs the W Kiewa link tk which is MVO according to the Vicmap 50 K topo.

A range of info. in the following images. re the gates, no gates issue. Click on each to expand. From Tawonga Gap going south. Coming over from Stoney Creek (Bright/Harrietville/Smoko) side is a very lengthy option. @Ubiquitous Steve ?

yes Dungeys Track closed at Pyramid Hill Track End....but even if u could pedal a Mt Bike/Motor Bike to the valley floor ..the ford would be difficult to cross when carrying winter flow..it has been in minor flood level for a while now...and up near Big Hill Lookout(not the Big Hill Firetower) the gate is closed on the West Kiewa Logging Rd also over winter...

driving to Mt Beauty and coming along to Big Hill Lookout is a good option but u need to be able to deal with fallen trees should they occur...

then a mt bike along West Kiewa Logging Rd the 6km of flat curving wide road to the Spring Saddle Jeep Track...should be possible to lift bikes over fallen trees and to continue on even up to Spring Sadddle if snow has melted a further 2km roughly(did seem less to me)..there are gates on Spring Saddle Track at start and end and also a more major metal barrier National Parks Gate just on edge of saddle.....

I would not continue towards Big Hill Firetower from Big Hill Lookout as u needlessly climb up only to decend again to Spring Saddle....stay on contour of West Kiewa Logging Rd using mechanical means to reduce the 6km tedium where ever...

Hi VSG, love your work with the topo maps. Any chance you could show Mt Beauty and the turn-off from the Falls Ck rd to Big Hill? I'd like to do this trip one day and for some reason this approach appeals...
    thanks!

Click on each for big, big version. Yellow highlights means government/maintenance vehicles only. Pink means seasonal closure (for Winter). The little bowtie symbol means locked gate.

From the Gap it goes past that tower along the ridge to the west side of the W Kiewa (Dungeys tk, Simmonds Gap etc). The road closed sign is gone. Checked last week.

Best option is up the Spring Creek Saddle track from Fainters Falls on the Bogong High Plains Road. Better to come down that way.

Second best option - from the Big Hill look-out, starting at the beginning of the Big Hill Fire Trail at the AGL locked gate. If no snow walk/cycle to where snow cover starts.

I hiked up up from Bogong Village, up Spring Saddle Track and the Fainters Fire trail to camp at Bogong Jack Saddle. There is an excellent campsite there. There is plenty of dead timber about if you want to have a camp fire . Just before the old cattle yard gate there is a tiny spring . It was flowing in March one year when I trekked up there so it must be reliable. You will need a pump up water filter to fill a container because it is just trickle across the track.
From Bogong Jack Saddle access to the Fainters is easy . A decent day trip in good weather on XC skis could be out to Tawonga Huts and back. I would like to give that a go.

The Hut at Bogong Jack Saddle was still there when I went up there in March , back a couple years ago.I did a green season trip report on it on this forum but I cannot locate it now.The Hut is nothing special but better than nothing if the weather turns to shite.
