I think location based # work pretty well. Nothing too specific, just the general area.

    Forgive the pseudo-serious post:

I’ve got a whole lot of ambivalence about this whole issue - (cf. how Instagram ruined the best spots)

This is reminiscent of ego-driven rock-climbing - it’s all about the intimidation factor - here’s the beta on something which is beyond the reach of ordinary mortals.... admittedly I really enjoy watching the commercial Alaskan big line videos of stuff I’ll never be able to ski....

Surely BC by definition is ‘offgrid’.... ( AS IF - esp. with our policy of “pics or it didn’t happen”)?

It’s like discovering the GPS waypoints for your favourite secret side-country stash online .... or watching a Youtube clip of a secret mountain run that took you beyond your personal limits - it simultaneously devalues and affirms one’s own adventures....

However, as soon as I read the ski journals from the 1930’s which share people’s excitement about the Australian mountains in the snow I feel happier because social media’s sharing the same joy in the same upbeat way, and celebrate people sharing the vibe.... which I do.

I love the self-inflicted illusion all us Aussie BC types suffer under so that we can have an ‘authentic’ extreme experience- that we’re in pristine untracked snow, doing new stuff out in the wilderness- AKA skiing on a tarred road, or a semi-industrial (hydro) building site or a grazed paddock overrun by alien vegetation, covered by 500mm of snow. (also known as the Bogong High Plains)

    The less online the better?

However, a gnarly line remains a gnarly line, and as soon as you’re more than 5 hours from a road or a resort it doesn’t matter, no matter how many times it’s been on the Internet.

I think the accepted rule for BC is - as long as you can die from it, it counts as BC, even if its been post-whored to death.

I mean, what’s the point of going if you aren’t posting it? OR, what’s the point of going if it isn’t a challenge?

We have this illusion of wilderness and of extremes - except it’s no longer true wilderness and no longer extreme when so many people have done it.

I love the fact that we can still get pushed beyond our own limits on someone else’s BC nursery slope...

Can’t wait to get out there - last season’s pics won’t fill the gap!

I'm not convinced that one is going to get the traction we're looking for.

My rule of thumb: More than three #hashtags and you're prolly being a precious #lifestyle #wannabe #dick.

Counts as three in one hit.

Any worthwhile tags people are seeing this winter?
