When does a ski "village" become a town?

Okay the smaller resorts with lodges like Charlotte Pass, Baw Baw and Ben Lomond are definitely villages, but places with 5,000 or 10,000 beds and all the shops, pubs, cafes, transport and infrastructure required to service those beds?

I know the term "village" sounds cutesy in marketing spiel, but our five big resorts (and Dinner Plain) surely have to qualify as towns by any reasonable standard?

    No Bunnings, no town.

Okay, I grew up in a place with 7,000 residents or 10,000 if you count the built up areas that have spilled across the town boundaries. But it has never had a Bunnings, so I guess that makes it a village. :(

But I guess that's okay, calling it a village sounds much prettier and more romantic than calling it a boring old town. :)

possibly the presence of some services, plus some measure of year round occupancy.

    • Thredbo would probably qualify on the basis of number of filled beds for much of the year, plus pub and supermarket
    • Falls Creek has a primary school and a supermarket (of sorts) that operate all year.(It has proudly avoided having a chapel or church of any kind.) Most years there is a pub at least some nights in summer
    • Dinner Plain maybe. It seems even quieter than Falls in summer. No school or summer supermarket.
    • Hotham and Perisher seem too dead in summer.
    • No idea about Buller in summer

OTOH maybe we should come at it from another angle - a village is where you can't walk down the st without stopping for a chat, where you are on first name terms with nearly all the shop people, tradies, medicos ...

Buller has a year round IGA, proper supermarket, but school is just winter. Summer is quiet but growing.

I think it is measured according to the size of the permanent population, not the number of beds.

ABS defines a small town as a population of 200 to 5000, and Thredbo has a population of around 470

I think the OP would be more interesting (sorry don’t want to de rail thread), if the question was the difference between a village and a resort.

I ask this as I prefer the feel of a village to a resort and many of my favourite ski fields are villages.

But to the OP I would say a village becomes a town when it has multiple of core shops I.e two supermarkets

Falls Creek has a proper supermarket -foodworks=IGA. The stock varies a lot though and can be frustrating in summer. my "of sorts" comment was to preempt that criticism.

interesting angle and I see the appeal of it. Not convinced though.

Mt Beauty/Tawonga Sth fails the 2 supermarket test but to me definitely feels like a town. high school, hospital and 2 of some core shops: hardware, butcher, pub. and choice of 4 ski shops :)

2016 census said Falls had pop of 293 which fits the lower end of that definition.

Mt Beauty/Tawonga Sth had a combined total of 1686. Splitting them is meaningless, a historical anomaly.
Tawonga, 574, also functions as a suburb of Mt Beauty but I think in this context should be a village. primary school, general store, mechanic, restaurants are the only "shops". You couldn't live there for more than a few days without going to "town".

    Bright had 2310

I quite like the "living there for ... without needing to go to a bigger centre for essentials". all our ski resorts would fail this in summer, and probably winter too.
I think mt beauty is ok for 2-4 weeks before the trek to Albury is needed

I'm genuinely surprised that post offices still exist. They became largely obsolete 20 years ago when people stopped sending letters.

Does a tourist beach town that booms in summer but is almost deserted in winter fall into the same category as a ski resort? If so, why aren't they called villages?

I think then expand the test to either two super markets or say x number of major services such as high school, supermarket, hardware, hospital, police station with more than one cop etc.

I would say only if the shops close in winter, to complicate this I guess you can get resort towns....

For me Charlottes is a resort, Perisher is a resort, selwyn is a resort, Thredbo is a village.

Overseas Whistler is a village (probably a town) , big white is a resort, Banff is a town, Sunshine is a resort, lake Louise is hard to place, as its stuck in the middle of resort / town but either way it’s a place to burn dollars!

Cooma is a "Junction", where farmers from N,S,E and W go to buy farming supplies.
Was being facetious about Bunnings....................and Cooma. :D
We did a road trip from up here all the way down the NSW coast with the kids about 10 years ago. Young bloke made a comment that still stays with me, "you can tell the size of a town by the size of the Bunnings". LOL

But whistler is definitly a reort, as it has lifts. Banff (like Jindy) you need to jump in a car/bus to get to the nearest hill

Until recently a time a town was declared a city when the population reached 10000.
Around these parts the so called coastal towns of Ocean Grove and Torquay would be horrified if they they would be described as such considering their population is closer to 20000.
It depends on how you market your self.

By that definition, South Lake Tahoe would be a resort as it has lifts, despite a population of almost 22000 in 2017.

And at any rate, the lifts at Whistler are well on the edge of what I would consider the "town". I stayed a few minutes' walk from the IGA and had to catch a bus to the gondolas.

    And another daffy definition.

In Canada, a village has a shop that stocks Tim Tams (like Sun Peaks). A town, like Whistler, has a shop that stocks Tim Tams and Vegemite.
