Hi, looking to do a light BC camping trip with a mate. We don't have a tonne of experience doing a few trips out in the past few years so wondering when the road to cp opens up or would off the back of thredders be the better idea?

We plan a trip out ski for a day sleep over night for maybe 2 nights. So totally open for best places for those who have not camped before too

Thanks

I'd suggest it may not be the normal 'try to have the road open for the long weekend' this year. Just based on amount of snow and also the fact that CP's new lease has them operating until the long weekend so passenger transport will be still required (they may want to maintain snow cover longer if possible). The discussions between those that have some say on this normally kick of in the second half of September. I'd say planning to head out from Thredbo is a more reliable option at this stage.

Kosi chair usually goes on maintainence shutdown shortly after ski season ends. Cp road will open ....... I 'll take Oct13 in the raffle. Rather dependent on weather events in the next month

i thought it was only for a week or two at the end of the season and they run snowgums instead though right?

Or over Mt P (there are broadly 3 ways to do this) , over to North Paralyser Trig, follow the ridge West for 800M ish and take the glades down to the Snowy, do not get sucked right no matter how good you think it looks, and you pop out above the Illawong Bridge over the Snowy.

I usually post this sort of thread myself in Mid September but I will be Himalayan trekking this spring so I will miss the chance to do an October KNP ski trip this year. If there are still piles of snow then Cascade hut is an option if you go next month rather than in October. Ditto for Guthega Power station .

Very late this year! Rode to the top 15/10 last year and I would think there was a lot more snow around.

Possibly. Main difference this year is CP now operates to the long weekend under the new lease arrangements. In previous years clearing would have already started a week or so ago.

Goodbye easy access good Spring skiing on the main range if the turning circle is going to be cleared that late from now on. It won't mean anything to CP (I'm hardly a valuable customer) but I'm boycotting that hill from now on.
Maybe there’s a dialogue to be had with CP along the lines that a full turnip circle on the long weekend or immediatly after wood generate bussiness if something was open & this was obvious & widely publicised?

Or is this just pissing into the wind?

I don't know about Charlottes, but I do know that the pre-takeover owners of Guthega called XC skiers The Bearded Ones and used to gripe about their extreme lack of economic contribution to Guthega.

It's primed to take advantage of the bc market.
What with the lease sorted and reports of year round operation.

It's not really a CP thing. RMS are responsible for the clearing.

There’s nowhere to spend money in Guthega so its rather daft to complain that people don’t economically contribute.

AT market is very different to XC market. XC'er add nothing to CP.... see them arriving by oversnow with food, grog etc...... only contribution is through the lodge's bed levy and over snow ticket....... and I've even seen a few towing a pulk between Perisher and CP.

Problem with Blyton Leisure (and most of the lodges) are that they don't get the AT market and haven't a clue how to tap into it. AT'ers like MTB over at Thredbo are the growth areas for the alpine regions.

Last year the road took forever to open. By the time it did a lot of melt had taken place.......

There was a lot of residual snow and most folks would recall pictures of people standing on the road near Eyre T Bar with the snow above shoulder height after the clearing machines had cleared the road. Not so this year IMO.... pic taken today showing sections of road between Eyre and Spencer’s. Hopefully access will be available before the inevitable melt!!!!

Alpine Access just ran a bc weekend out of Southern Alps.
Arcteryx where sponsors of some sort.
There is movement in the camp.

As you well know from your Guthega base, nothing beats a warm lodge, cold beer, hot food, hot shower and warm bed after a day on the main range. Top of Carruthers is no more than 90 minutes from my lodge door. Getting old(er) and soft...... DILLIGAF? Also, really the only way I'm getting +0.95 (Mk III) into BC skiing.

Almost as cheap as bushwalkers.

I suspect the new version ($5k of softgoods and hardware and a propensity for craft beer and steak) is better at spending.

Has any XC skier here ever dropped down to the Chalet after a day on the Main Range?

Twice this past weekend. Pub was open. Couple of lifts running. Nobody on the hill! Groomers almost untouched at noon. Pic below from the weekend.

Now, last year once the road opened to Spencer’s gate (which was closed) we skinned from there to Stilwell via Guthrie’s, then skied back into the village before skinning back to the Spencer’s gate - nothing open in the village but it’s reasonable for them to close post winter to regroup etc.....

Maybe in the new operating model the resort may tap into the non winter market. It’s no big deal to drive down into the village if something is open. It’s quite a nice spot for a beer in Summer....

I was part of that event. Great weekend! Was held at Southern Alps Ski Club lodge (I’m a long term lodge member). Hopefully it runs next year as well.....we spent money at the pub but it’s bottled beer....

There was a cafe (and maybe a bar) in the Guthega centre - the big stone building.

Ghost building, has been for years. Sole purpose is to be a stair way to the the car park double. There is the little XC hire shop, but no one knows it is there. I know as had to deliver some snow shoes there a few years ago. But I don't use it as I have bought (paid money, good money) for my BC touring gear already.

There is potential in this site to do something most likely for lunch & stuff given the ques at the pub and broken log. But it would have to be rockin good trendy themed something rather than the 1955 factory cafeteria it currently is to make it work.

Massive potential. I actually cant understand why its not used - a good building with old fashioned character granite and wood, decent views from the cafeteria level.

The past tense is useful for indicating things that used to be.
Yep, got that & gave you an update.

Tho I’m unsure why you needed to confirm my earlier observation that no one spent money cos there was no where to spend money.

Because, when the cafe (and maybe bar) was there, there was a place to spend money. But The Bearded Ones did not spend.
That’s a ridiculous claim really, Guthega has always been about well more than xc skiers.
