I think people are dreaming if they rekon the resorts will open this year.
They are an absolute hotbed for virus spreading. Closes doors/windows, re circulated air, close proximity on lifts/lift lines, running noses wiping them on everything.

I really hope I'm wrong and I'd be rapt if it was business as usual but I give it 0 chance.

I'm planning on doing a heap of split boarding but like it was mentioned before, the approaches to the snow might even be closed or they could lock the entire mountains up entirely for safety, as there would be no ski patrol anywhere near the place. So no avalanche control or no back country rescue.

Wow.

Spewing that I've already paid for five nights accomm in Thredbo.

However, cheering that I got my backcountry set up sorted last year, I have a feeling I might need it this year if things keep going the way they are.

If we can actually access the location I think it could be a great year for the BC conference??

Run as day trips or use dispersed tents?

Feelin’ the vibe (love) already!! :snowboarder: :skier:

It could be an incredible year for back country. I like to go 3 weekends a month and if i can still do that but do backcountry the whole time it will be a hell of a learning experiance and incredible training. It would set up perfectly for a big northern hemisphere trip at the end of the year provided travel and the economy has picked up.
Or the whole snow fields could be closed. We could all have lost our jobs and be in the second Great Depression.
Interesting times ahead!

I still have an at call reservation in my Island bend cabin, no chance of a refund. Just
Hinted to the big boss that I may need AT set up this season, her eyes rolled.
Just need skins bindings and boots. If I get a refund on the epic pass that will cover half of it.

Just hoping I’m still alive and kicking by mid winter;) Anything else is a bonus:)

I predict it will snow and the hills will still be there. Unfortunately I really can’t see the resorts opening, the governments projected figures show peak infection July/August. I wouldn’t take it as given that backcountry access will be easy. It is entirely possible that public road access to Perisher/Guthega may be closed. Thredbo road will still be open, but the access is not so easy from there without lifts.

I even have my concerns about the northern hemisphere season 20/21.

cancelling a lift pass is a pretty good biz case! Swapping accom for day trips or tents too? More savings,

it’s a bloody big hike up from Thredders Villge to the tree line.

not so bad (200m less) from DHG but that’s if the road is ploughed & or open all the way.

I predict it’s also a good winter to own/access a big, able 4WD - with good chains, tyres and a mate with the same.

I'm going to learn to ski this year, whether that is at Corin Forest, the indoor ski slopes or Thredbo remains to be seen.

Plus hoping for my first split-boarding adventure, and I have a Thredbo season pass - keen to see the new Gondola.
Yes, now you are singing my song!. Learn Classic XC skiing with a pattern base. You will become proficient soon enough. Since you already snowboard you have overcome the fear of sliding down hills and like doing that. With XC skiing you can ski up hills too :).Perisher XC ski centre would be my pick of places in NSW.

yes after seeing a note from our ski club in Vic I have very little confidence that lifts will open as usual this winter. I really hope I’m wrong but it’s not looking good.

re the BC thing: I think it’s an excellent year to discover BC & / or XC skiing. But for the main resorts, if lifts are shut, will roads still be ploughed? Will resort approaches (in Vic) be locked?

places like Hotham & Thredbo are advantageous as they’re on highways and I think the law ensures their clearing. But this won’t apply to the others.

Hotham would be totally inaccessible from Bright without ploughing and Thredbo cut from DHG in mid winter?

I’d imagine NSW parks would gate PB & Guthega if lift ops were shut. Lake Mtn could be gated too.

so I’d guess skinning / Xc out of Hotham could be the go in Vic, and Hiking up from Thredbo Village for NSW. Unless The Crackenback runs as a single lift?

very early let’s see what happens closer to winter?
Hotham , D.P. and JB Hut are on the Great Alpine Road. That carriageway must be kept open if possible to allow Bairnsdale traffic to reach Bright irrespective of any snow sports considerations.

I'm feeling likewise.
This thing is going to bight pretty deep and take a while before "risk" diminishes.
The Northern Hemisphere shut-down indicates that they won't take risk into the early season and, once closed, they're going to have to be very brave to say "all good...let's open".
I hope I'm wrong, but........:(

BC XC ski access to a number of ski locations in VIC. will remain possible including :Lake Mtn. from Mt. Margaret Gap and Keppel's hut ; Mt. St. Gwinear ; Bogong High Plains via the Big Hill Lookout and the Fainters: Mt. Stirling via Carter's rd. and Road No. 3 / Mt. No.3 Hut . and JB Plain via the Great Alpine Road. If Parks Vic. open Cresta Valley at Mt. Buffalo then that too will be good. Access to Edmondson's hut and Ropers hut on the BHP can be reached by some long slogs with multi night packs, up from lower in the Valley. Mt. Bogong will still be there too.

Thredbo is open right now with mountain bikers riding the same lifts used by skiers, staying in the same accomodation used by skiers.

I’m not saying it won’t happen. I would have thought though having people outdoors in the (sometimes) sunshine and fresh air would be sensible in a pandemic, rather than forcing the population to be isolated, indoors and indolent for 6 months. Does t sound like a good recipe to ward off disease.

Yeah, but.......lift queues, ski tubes, food halls, low temps, snot, gloves, staff accomodation, lodges, packed supermarket......what chance does sunshine and fresh air have to kill off all them germs?

Ha ha sure it’s a balance. But I can say for sure that you’re probably going to be in a better position to ward off illness when you’re fit and outdoors through skiing etc, than indolent, binging on Netflix and Cheesles for 4 months.

Sitting in the Bar Pit with fellow Forumites, guzzling wine and telling tall tales, at the end of a day happily sharing said lifts, tubes, food outlets, rest rooms, etc., with the masses, also carries a degree of risk.
(Hopefully, the booze kills a few of said germs!) :)

I think it’s waaaaaaayyyy too early to be making calls that lifts won’t open. There’s 3 full months until season opening and 4 to 5 months until peak season. A lot can and will happen between now and then

This. PB shut operations this week for a week with a call on the weekend for next week but winter ops are months away. Would be amusing in Vail shuts it's three resorts and the rest run. Charlotte's and Thredbo are powering along.

Scotty said 6mths of 500 and under for outdoors.

Ballot for ski days anyone??

With the exception of skitube, PB and BC centres 500 in one place at a time would be a difficult achievement. Car parks are already "socially isolated".

IMHO it will be another GFC season where people choose to say away due to lack of funds and belt tightening.

Northern shut down happened at the tail end of there winter when infections where ramping way up. Our winter is 80+ days away when the public and economy affects will be well understood.

Back to the original question, I was hoping to work at a resort this year, but that feels unlikely.

So it'll be out touring a heap for me. Will be interesting to see if numbers in the BC increase this year. On the one hand people are forced to if the lifts close, on the other is the fact that not a lot of skiers like walking uphill too much.

Besides BC skiing, I have pretty low expectations of the coming season (to mitigate disappointment levels). Will aim to get back to Whistler for next year. The terrain there is next level.

No. Don't. Go to a ski resort, hire some downhill gear, get a lesson. Classic XC is for old blokes who like flat terrain.

Up to you though - spitboarding is doable, but can't beat the efficiency of touring skis.
I started with classic and then have branched out in BC XC skiing .I will get some down hill lessons using my BC touring skis if Baw Baw and Falls Creek open this season. The O.P. is interested in BC activities. Being able to ski outside the resorts on all terrain for 20 kms per day might appeal to her.

Many resort skiers have no interest in skinning up hills or snow camping. That means business as usual for me really.

Given I live in Perth I am pretty happy with my birthday present purchase this year...

I needed to spend the next year training to be a park rat to pass my L2 exam - so I bought myself this set up to train between seasons.

more space for us eh T oh?

I might even get fit by the end of winter? I find Lift skiing if I do enough of it trims me down a bit and makes my quads stronger but doesn’t make my heart and lungs much fitter. BC and doing very does that!

Not all bad.

just a thought, If there’s little or no grooming, it will be a good year to go wide or access wider XC / BC skis? And practice said skills with the like! (;-)

I can sense the ski resorts will not be 101 % sure of opening , clearing roads, or taking chalet bookings or having 150 kids tobogganing on one small strip of slurpee machine ice on weekends.
Operation BC XC contingency plans must be executed with supply drops, BC access track clearing , untried access routes scouted out, and done and dusted etc. etc. all before April concludes!

Madshus Epoch with NNN BC bindings are my go to ungroomed snow XC ski rig for all ungroomed non resort terrain .I know some forum users will say that they are skinny skis ;-P but my money tree is drying up with present circumstances being what they are and income streams slowing down.
I will just ski and snow camp with whatever gear I already have.
It looks like Cresta Valley at Mt. Buffalo will be open for 2020 XC skiing and so will Lake Catani Hut at Mt. Buffalo will be open for snow camping.
So no need to start looking at recipes for dystopian future zombie road kill apocalypse stew (with cous cous).
Some XC skiing will happen !!

Staffing and actual demand are going to be just as big an issue as public health for this winter season.
