Retirement planned for mid July with the intention of going wherever is open if at all possible! Fingers are firmly crossed!
Balance Bar, Jib Board, training bindings and training mat - off snow training aids. https://snowboardaddiction.com/collections/most-popular-products Given my biggest issue is the fear factor involved with sliding along a box I thought playing with these toys every day as part of my gym routine might help me overcome a lot of that prior to getting back on snow. It should also help me get the combined rotational/vertical/longitudinal movements for things like nose rolls, 180s, 360s, and toe to toe ingrained and somewhat automatic instead of having to think about them prior to execution.
And toilets - need more frequent cleaning & they’re often crowded - loos are a worry & not just the fecal issue.
This goes for pretty much every ski field toilet I have been in, except recent Japan ski field toilets, but to be fair we were pretty much to almost the only people there. Ski field toilets are usually pretty rough and just about need a full time cleaner. It's a bit of a paint the Sydney Harbour bridge job.
Come on now @skifree I thought it was quite becoming! (images stolen directly from website from whence said product was purchased - may as well give them a plug - Snowboard Addiction - they delivered the products in a week! That’s outstanding to Perth! Keep our little businesses up and running eh?)
I am making supply drops in the VIC ALPS. Initially for planned back country ski trips, but maybe subsequently for winter escape from crumbling civilization survival quarantine trips in very remote places that require XC ski and BC snow survival skills and gear to reach.
You realise we are a net exporter of food and have the capacity to feed roughly 3x our population right? Plus when things get worse, just like in Europe mountain recreation will get banned as it could place unnecessary strain on search & rescue and medical workers. My friend in France who works in mountain rescue is currently in town policing isolation laws.
This and other posts assume that open travel for recreation are still being allowed, if we go the way of Italy this may not be true. Anyhooo I am hoping to do at least part of my winter camp at Pretty Valley using the big lavvu with wood stove, been putting $20- a fortnite away under my pillow to pay for port, rum and petrol; in that order
I tested their facilities to their full capacity in January. I’m pleased to report they are salubrious as ever.
While still an advisory I would argue that it is needed for my mental well-being, when it becomes mandated I can't use that reasoning and would have to abandon any winter camping plans. I foresee the peak sometime in August given the lack of any real action so far, even if it is a beat-up.
Score ! We've all been given a pass to go skiing "The only travel outside of the Canberra region should be for work, for compassionate reasons, and to ensure the essential supplies and services that our region needs," he said.
Worst case scenario I still hope to take my boy up to the old Cresta snowfields on Mt Buffalo and bootpack up for some downhill runs.
"Where are you dodging the roadblocks and on the spot health check checks to go BC snow camping and BC XC skiing this season?".
That is if Parks Vic. and the Vic Roads actually clear the road up there. Otherwise there are BC routes up onto the plateau that requires a big pack and a long slog such as the Big The Walk from Eurobin Creek Picnic ground. After a good dump of snow with zero road clearing you could hike/XC ski to Lake Catani via the Chalet using the Big Walk route and then Nordic Ski the whole plateau if the roads will not be cleared. The roads would not have foot prints on them either. This concept could be applied to BC routes up to Mt. Hotham via the Bon Accord Spur, The Fainters via Big Hill Lookout , Roper's hut via Bogong Creek saddle and Timm's spur , Falls Creek via road number 24, and the route that comes up the backway via The Mt. Mckay road ,Mt. Stirling via Carter's road and boot pack up Mt. No . 3 road etc. However if our front doors are welded shut with iron bars by the Virus police and we all have to eat each other ;-P after the tinned food runs out then I suppose BC skiing will be not so likely or possible. It would be safer to be holed up at Mac. Springs hut for 3 or 4 months over winter 2020.
I agree, until I am actually banned from surfing and swimming in the ocean at quiet places and visiting the VIC. ALPS for bushwalking & camping and BC XC skiing for my mental and physical well being, I shall continue to do it .Be it either solo or with one or two friends if they want to come/are permitted to come along. Owning a bicycle and being a keen cyclist could become very handy in many ways. Being quite unused to using a mob. ph. daily will make me harder to track. Paying for petrol in cash may become banned which means your movements and electronic footprint will be traceable. OH BRAVE NEW WORLD. Deep down our Dear Leader Spud Dutton must be loving this stuff.
What’s the bet that with the way 2020 is turning out that the ski season will be a record one, and we won’t be able to get out there.
Yes there will probably be 3 metres of snow at 1200 M. across the VIC ALPS and our front doors will be welded shut !. I wonder if exercise bicycle companies will deliver via online orders?. Anyway the 50 M. heated outdoor pool where I distance swim a lot for my sanity and physical well being has closed so I am going to do some ocean swimming tomorrow in Port Phillip Bay.
I’m thinking my newish rooftop box could be too obvious if sneaking up to the snow for a weekend. I suspect folded seats and dark blankets over skis will be the way to go. Perhaps use a few red cross props and essential food supplies as a cover if stopped? Time to get creative.
Not sure if you are serious or not .... I think not, an attempt at humour But that is exactly the kind of thing going on in Italy 4-5 weeks ago. The season is done and dusted. People need to move on and concentrate on preventing as many deaths as possible.
If I go out for some BC skiing and snow camping solo miles from anyone as I have done in the past how could I be doing something WRONG?.I usually keep my skis inside my car when travelling . It is the surfboard that is conspicuous!. I am glad to have wet suit everything for some winter ocean swimming/surfing for my sanity.Whatever happens my trip reports ( from trips that I can neither confirm nor deny planning nor executing) which I may wish to publish here, they will be saved up for when this is all over.
Because if anything were to go wrong, the response would be delayed in the first instance, and if you needed an ICU bed then you would be taking up a bed that may be needed for someone requiring a ventilator.
Find some local sand dunes to ski ..or try grass skiing which had a following in Melbourne in the 1950/60's I think
i know were getting ahead of thigns here, but expecting the nanny state to come down hard for no good reason. the restrictions and closures are intended to prevent infection or transmission of the virus. ski touring doesnt have such risk. unlock the gates!
It's time to think of everybody else and not just yourself. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Do some research and understand the ramifications. If we don't work to get this sorted, who knows how our lives will be at the end.
mm mostly humour. Need a laugh right now. I don’t know how desperate I’ll feel for a XC ski somewhere by say the end of August? Or even late Sept? I hope I can trust myself to stay in my local area - maybe look at the nice pics from my Recent Japanese trip? Walk around the block away from others. Set up exercise bike in front of Warren Miller DVDs, plan for a possible Japow Pt #2 next summer instead? Set up my ski bench in the garage & throw guff out for hard rubbish collection, audit my ski gear spares & chuck out guff etc... Any other ideas folks?
When the tinned food runs out!!?? I am disappoint! I thought you lot would’ve had the dehydrators running for weeks storing up food for YEARS!!
i havent been touring in the alps. why is it closed? greater reliance on lift access infrastructure? huts?
yes serious. havent been going to the gym, restaurants, socialising lately. but going out for a bushwalk or solo ski tour is completely different.
Because people getting lost, hurt, etc are a major drain on the police and emergency and medical services, including hospitals.
In France, mountain rescue is a police division, my friend who works in rescue there is now doing police-y things to ensure compliance with quarantine etc.
Aah, this is the first year I've put deposits on season passes - Epic Australia passes - for me, the lovely missus and our charming offspring. So I'd like to be skiing at Falls and Hotham with lifts but I'm doubting any resorts will open this year. So I'll be staying tuned to see what is happening closer to May 1 when the balance is due.
