Hi All, Back in the early 90's we went on a trip around Japan and my memory is not what it should be. We went to this site and was told a story but as the only english speaking people on the tour, I am not sure if the story is true or not. I wouldnt put it past a tour guide to take a lend of travelling gaijin.
So the story was that in WW2 a farmer noticed this geological volcano appear in his paddies and was asked by the government to 'Make sure its dark over night as it is providing a beacon for the enemy'
So I know I am gullible and loved the concept of the story but cannot remember where it is. My google search's have turned up nothing so I thought I would as a far more accurate source - ski.com.au...
Here are the photos.

Saw the thread topic and thought this was going to be a game thread. Would work! Lots of peeps with suitable material. Maybe whoever manages to answer the question correctly?

Hehehe - I did think about putting it in the "OS - where is" thread but that would have meant I would have had to get one right first before I could post the pic! Plus - after the first guess, I would have had to say "I dont know!"

Found it! Noboribetsu onsen (Hokkaido)/Tessen-ike

And the region is also named "Jigokudani = 地獄谷 = Hell Valley" just like Shiga Kogen's snow monkey park. The valley which is onsen source with boiling water is often named 地獄谷 = Jigokudani = Hell Valley. There are quite many valleys named Hell Valley in Japan and it's because "Oni ( = Japanese demon) + boiling water" is a Japanese traditional image of hell:p

Oh so buried by volcanic ash? Wow! My initial thoughts was somehow collapsed due to an earthquake but that did not make sense because they look intact.
Indeed.
It wasn't that long ago either? around early 90's.

Thanks for that - we certainly went to Noboribetsu onsen - was a highlight of the trip. So maybe I am wrong in putting those last 2 photos with the first two as I didnt think it was there. But that photo you posted is certainly the same as the one I posted.

As far as I can tell, all your photos are from 2 separate spots around the point on the right, and the story relates to the location on the left (a few km away). So maybe you took in all these spots on a single tour?

Fantastic - thanks for looking at this for me.
Yes - looking at google maps, this reminded me of a chairlift ride near and around a 'bear zoo' (in quotes as I am still waiting for the day I see the RSPCA do a doco on how bad the bears were treated here - hopefully its different now but WOW) The chairlift went to My Usu viewing platform. We then staied at the Norboribetsu onser hotel - I recommend to anyone who asks that they should stay there. Loved it. Then I guess the next day we went to the second lake in those photos.

In Japan if you aren't shooting a bear you are treating it nicely

The snow monkey park in Nagano was started by a chap to save the monkeys from the old men farmers who were shooting them to protect their apples.
Aint no love lost between old Japanese men and animals let me tell you ;)

I actually worked for 3 months as a guide at the monkey park and down in yudanaka town I noticed that every time a monkey showed up on the roof of a house that everyone seemed to pull out a slingshot from their pocket and start firing stones at them.
You can even buy BB guns in the hardware store for the same purpose

Fukui pref?
I don't think so...though it maybe.
There is one at Otari ...
But this one may have been in Nanjo in Fukui.......

Though i'm leaning towards Otari.

*roadside station Otari.
**usually has 100cm of snow in that spot on Australia day.

Hyst I think that might be Kashi. Not 100 percent sure though.
The mountain scene looks to be kashimiyarigatake, lines up view from the resort looking that way; not exactly sure where, but nearish to the upper base area.

Thanks both, it seems to be the hit - other half says it rings a bell - half way between Omachi and Hakuba, (Yanaba)
