Just wondering if anyone knows where in the Snowy Mountains these photos are taken. They are from some old slides from my Dad who is no longer around to tell the story. I am trying to get some facts to go with the photos as I convert them to digital format. Some places look familiar but I am not too sure. Thanks in adavance.
I'd say this one is standing just next to Guthega Dam wall looking along the pondage in a SW direction
my input.... Guthega Pondage but not from the side that gareth thinks it is Eucumbene Dam Eucumbene Dam again Not really sure Murray 2 Pondage Centre Valley any Saturday in August 1982 No idea No idea Smiggin Holes (definitely not Sponars) back to Guthega Dam again
Overflow from the Perisher carpark on some Saturday in August - things havent changed since the sixties
Just had a look at Google Earth. This is Tumut Pond. This is tumut pond with the slide around the wrong way (ie. mirror image of the above shot and with less water in the lake).
Yes. Possibly where there is/was a private rope tow. 35°56'16.72"S 148°23'2.24"E ^ location of photographer.
Thanks everyone..I am very grateful for your expertise, time and knowledge!! I really appreciate your help! I will know be able to record where these pictures were taken. Sorry about the flipped slide ..was late last night and I was so excited as I had just got the slide convertor and went crazy scanning some of the many hundreads of slides I that Dad took. He developed his own slides/films and was a passionate photographer of Australia. I have a few more to go through over the next months and will know where to come to find out where they were taken. I also have many snowy hydro scheme original articles from newspapers that I will also scan and post as they might be of interest to some of you are interested in the history of the snowy mountains. Thanks again!
Of course it's smiggins, you'll probably notice i commented the first time at about 6am so I'll make that my excuse for my mistake. I thought the treetop in the foreground of the dam is pretty interesting. Does anyone know how long it took dammed snowgums to die? This one still has leaves so depending how long they take to die and whether we get the location, we could probably look up what year it was dammed and thus a good estimation of when the photo was taken. (unless my logic is somehow flawed which is entirely possible) On this one, notice the car in the middle ground so looks like there is a road running through the middle of the photo. Probably not smiggins then but somewhere of kosi rd perhaps? Looks like it was a pretty popular spot and that area looks like it has been cleared beginners.
i think you will find the Guthega dam photo is back to front as well. This is the way it should look - the Guthega lodges a would be off to the left of picture. Its always fun trying to work out which way old slides should viewed.
a suggestion for you. try scanning this slide in again at extremely hi-res - as much as 3200dpi I would be willing to bet when you do this you will be able to read the sign. When I scanned in my dads slides from the 1960's i was amazed at the amount of detail they contained that was revealed by the hi-res scan.
Hey Mr Mook thanks for the advice and for the correct orientation of slides..it would make a difference..what slide scanner did you use. I am not too sure if myn scans that resolution...I would be interested in what you used. Also I need to get the 'stuff' off the slide and was thinking of an air puffer type thing but dont know the correct thing as I am new to this.
I believe this one may be between perisher and smigs. Looking from the far side of the road back to the resort side of the road, perisher some way up the road to the left, and smigs just round the corner and behind the hill to the right. Either that or just downhill from Dainer's gap before the left hand downhill corner Awesome photos BTW!!!
Jontsy...interesting thoughts regards year of slide...I think they are late 1950s..he bought this car new and put a roof rack on it in 1960 to travel acround Australia...so its before that... I also noticed a car shape but I dismissed it as a rock with snow on it as I didnt think about the road going through the picture.
I have just found this one its also at the snowies but with a lot more snow...he must have stayed somewhere there as it looks snowed in and he has the roof rack on so this is in 1960 when he went on a 6 month honeymoon trip around Australia.
I have an Epson 3490 scanner with built in transparency adapter for doing slides & negatives. I've been scanning for nearly 10 years now so i use it on "professional" mode which allows me to adjust all different kinds of settings including resolution. For 99% of everyday scanning the automatic/basic/default/wizard settings are fine to use. But for slides and negatives, I really think its better to switch to manual settigns and play around with things such as descreening, colour correction, dpi etc. Especially because even though they are small, they have a lot of detail stored in them.
the 3490 is not the current model now but a similar level scanner with transparency scan capability will do the job. I prefer to scan slides & negatives at 2400dpi. this slide from 1964 was scanned at 2400dpi and colour corrected to remove a strong blue tint. Zoom in and you can clearly see weeds etc on the cement
Doing some work on one of the sites at the moment. Some old photos of the Happy Jacks camp would help and be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to everyone for the comments and I will look more into scanning slides and do a bit of research about some of the things Mook has suggested. Is this the scanner you are talking about Mook? http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1866233,00.asp
Snow Blowey...was that construction picture of the Happy Jacks site? You would be most welcome to use it ( if you PM me I could give you name etc of the photgrapher...my dad) I will be going through more slides/ articles etc over the next month or so and can post things that may be relevant to the snowies for you to use if any good for your work.
here are some photos from 2 trips my dad made to perisher in 1975. Some friends of his were members of the lodge that used to be at the top of Pipers Gap. the Catholic church Jindaybyne Front Valley clearing snow from the Kosciuszko road Looking from the second floor of the lodge down the Kosciuszko Road towards Smiggins Holes the old sno-cat that served as oversnow transport for the lodge
the sunny side of the lodge looking towards Mt Piper looking from the lodge to Perisher Valley Looking from the lodge towards Mt Piper. The old wooden ski jump can be seen near the centre of the picture
NIce pictures Mook are they scanned from slides? Front valley looks really different and the perisher ski center is amazingly small compared to now! By the way was the link I included to your scanner you use for slides?
These photos are brilliant - a fascinating record of the glorious past. Regarding when the dams filled, I remember being at Adaminaby in summer of early 63 (I think - could have been 62) and there were still bits of town sticking up through the water. If not then, it was mid-64. Jeez that sounds like old fogey stuff, yes? Just trying to work out whether it was the year my family toured the Snowy Scheme, or the school excursion in year 6.
Any other pictures of the old ski jump would be fantastic. The only other one I have seen. On those old skis and bindings down this would take serious balls.
the run out was the biggest problem and ultimately why the jump was pulled down. It was decided it was too dangerous to use.
yes to both the pictures are from slides - but the ones I posted have been reduced significantly in size. Yes that is the scanner i use, but note that review is from 2005. the current epson model with transparency scanning is the V370 but any equivalent scanner from canon or hp would be suitable as well. Like anything its not perfect. Sometimes i have to re-scan several times changing the settings to get a good image.
At last I know I am not imagining a ski jump at Perisher, '65 model that started snow trips in '66 almost every season since, I will try and find mums slides as well.
