Hi all, on days like this coming Thursday and Friday, which parts of the resort are the best to ski in when its very windy. I was thinking that Smiggins is good due to the direction it faces and it being mainly T-bars etc, or Front Valley due to the tree lined areas?

Any info/ responses would be welcome
    Thanks

Smiggins and centre valley as already stated. Interceptor, North Perisher and Sun Valley can be good options too (especially if the wind has more south than north in it). Most of Eyre bowl too for a lot of wind directions, although it can be awkward above that wooden showfence half way up the T.

You may also find the Ridge at Blue Cow to be well sheltered from westerlies - but potentially painful to get back to the train station from if the Terminal chair is shut - and also Blue Calf T at Guthega is largely wind-proof but likely impossible for you unless you are staying on the hill over there.

Eyre, will be windy in the top 30M of elevation, below would normally be fine.

Guthega is worth a good look in a breeze. Ditto coment for Eyre.

    It depends on wind direction.

But North Perisher, brumby t bar and Guthega are spots to consider (not sure of new lift alignment there yet though).

The new chairlift is not good in the wind, particularly the top couple of towers. It stands out proud of the top of the hill and above the treeline. Had a couple of amazingly-windy rides up it one day last week. Wind was fairly strong but not totally-outrageous NW - eg Pleasant Valley was on hold but the Terminal chair was running at normal speed and the skate/ski down over the desert from BC to Guthega wasn't too bad - and it was the most wind-shaken I have ever been on a chair. (context: this is the 31st consecutive year I have had a Guthega or Perisher season pass).

Blue Cow T-bar is usually ok on a windy day - usually has to be pretty bad for them to need to go to half-speed or close it - and as I said earlier the Calf is almost immune to wind issues, but the new chair, awesome as it is, is IMHO not somewhere to be if ANY lifts in Perisher are on wind hold at all.

Freedom chair stable in light winds earlier today but only took a bit more and it was rocking. From the shape of the bit at the top meant to bring the chair in straight for the unload (sorry, not so technical) it is built to cope with a fair bit of swing.

Blue cow tbar track can get iced up with the wind....could even be right where the cross over from the chair is. Can also get some wind blown snow drifts lower on the track.

    Hey @VSG,

I've noticed in your map that it includes the Ridge access from the back of Smiggs and also Devils Playground is showing up as blue, do you have an unaltered and high resultion of the map?

    In answering the OP Question,

Generally Centre, Front Valleys and Smiggins and Guthega and the Ridge side of Blue Cow are almost windless, except where the V8 rises on the last 2 poles when you really feel the wind

    Smiggins.
very rare for the chair to go on hold
very easy to swap between the tbars to change it up.
Generally very sheltered so usually more comfortable

there was a groomed trail from back of smiggs to base of ridge, sunday last. My pic was just to indicate broad areas to shelter.

    See perisher trail map. http://www.perisher.com.au/resort-information/trail-resort-maps/trail-map.html

Ridge has great shelter when wind is coming from I think S, SW, W ?
I know in the past I have gotten out of Blue Cow terminal and its howling then headed over and nice and calm except right at the top.

Guthega doesn't favour any wind either. It faces straight into it all the time.

There are quite a few sheltered spots at Guthega, the upper t-bar can be unpleasant at times, once in the trees though...
