Alex C, yours is Bogong area, yes? can't narrow it down though.

Ijay, somehow I'm thinking a canyon exit (or something like that) in the Blue Mts somewhere...otherwise CM's suggestion is also quite feasible.

    NSW is on the money.

This spot is 16km from the road and not far from a major river, a old fire trail leads most of the way there.

    Ijay,

    Pindar Cave?

A short detour off the Great North Walk above Wondabyne. Big enough to camp a whole Scout troop without need for tents!

Alex, nice pic! Was that over the long weekend? Not much regrowth yet by the look of it, or is it all low regrowth not visible in pic?

Is it Bogong Staircase from around Michell Hut? Or at least from Eskdale Spur?

Ijay - I have know idea, but hows Yarrongilly Caves as a guess?

Romfrantic is correct its Bogong, taken from Michell hut.

GS: Yeah it was taken yesterday morning, theres not much low stuff visible in that picture other than the dead trees in the foreground. Doesn't seem to be much growing back in that area bigger than 2m or so currently.

Also heres a pano from further up Eskdale Spur:

Again not backcountry but at least I was on tele skis when this was shot on a borrowed cardboard camera in '96 (or '95). There's plenty frontside skiers here and everyone's interested in big snow. Where is it?

OK. Thanks all for your interest in my photo.

Tomorrow I will post map etc.

This cave/overhang is in the Wollemi NP and has significant historical connection with the first mapping survey of the area. It is not often visited ( so far as I can see from the Log book) and makes for a decent day walk, 32k return says my GPS.

    Cheers

This place is Clews Cave, named after Lieutenant Colonel H.P.G. Clews ( Major Clews ) who conducted the first trig. survey of the area.

Acces for me was from the Putty Road just North of the New Yards.

The cave is shown on the CMA Colo Heghts 1:25k topo map.

Once off the fire track the country is like this
    [IMG]

Major Clews wrote of his surveying experience in the Colo region in a work titled "The Bad Bit Across the River", here is part of it
It seems he is remembered mostly for his survey work at the start of the Snowy Scheme and his reclusivness.

    Further info here and here.

Thanks for sharing that info Ijay, in fact I had thought about it being in the Bowens Creek area - the south branch canyon exits, close to a road etc....I guess I wasn't that far off.

Right, Blowey. It's Eyre, tower 7 I think. I remember at tower 8 the snow was right up to the sheaves and you could ski across the cable! Unfortunately couldn't borrow a camera to get that.

Naturally Eyre T wasn't running, but International was - after a bit of cat work, and we skied most of Eyre from it. Sun Valley changed shape completely; a huge drift off Olympic dog leg had to be 20 metres deep in places.

Unbelievably that snow was the result of a single patch of NW weather over 2-3 days. It was 'solid' snow - high water content - didn't compress under its own weight, or skis. Happened very near season close. While all parts of Perisher received good top-ups, the consistent north-westerly produced remarkable localised buildups on the lee sides of Mt P and Back P.

I've just looked back at the weekly snow depth data that SteepNDeep posted last year. Neither '95 or '96 seem to reflect what happened, but '96 seems more likely.

It's on record. Perisher Media Dept were out videoing the unusual sights.

And I think the Chopper is Bell 212 - not sure on that, but I reckon it was taken last year when new toilet sites were being inspected for Michell and Bivouac hut sites? Is the date close?

Sorry, bit vague at this time of day. Budawangs, Morton NP, fromt eh Castle over Byangee (sp? Walls towards the coast. Pigeonhouse out of frame to the R(S)?

A NSW classic, to be sure, to be sure.

Yep, on top of The Castle in the Budawangs, looking south-east over the flat topped Byangee Mountain. Fascinating walk, quite unlike anything we have in Victoria. Nearby Monolith Valley is one of the most overwhelming places I've been to [IMG]

Love the Castle/Byangee area. Did a weekend walk a few years ago across the top of Byangee Walls. Bit tricky to find a way to the top and there's no water (unless it's been raining a lot), so had to take in one hell of a lot of water to keep us going for two hot days.

Try a walk to Mount Budawang (1138m), to the south of Budawangs central. The vegetation near the summit is sub-alpine.

    Big pano from summit

The Budawang's were a real eye opener when I did then on Cup Weekend two years ago. What a shame there isn't a north-south track allowing a decent extended walk. We went in from the west, so the first and last days were really just a dull approach march. But the second and third days [IMG] wow, truly wonderful!

Okay, try this one. The red dirt may be helpful in working out the location. [IMG]

I'd guess that it's Queen Spur, below the summit of Mt Buggery looking towards The Crosscut Saw and Stanley Name Spur. If it's not, then I'd punt on somewhere close to there.
