From someone who has never been in that area, Mt Stirling looking towards Mt Howitt and the Crosscut Saw?

As for the breed of dog, I don't know the name, even though I've seen plenty of them!

Ahh ok it is an airedale Terrier. I was looking at photos of both the Welsh and Airedale and went for the Welsh! They look kind of similar.

The Welsh Terruer is very similar to the Airedale - but much smaller

Yep, Airedale Terrier (King of terriers) on Mt Stirling when you could take dogs up there.

Yep, spot on. That's Angelus Hut beside the frozen Lake Angelus (1650m).
A large hut, but heats up nicely with the log-burner stove. Thanks to the Dept of Conservation (DoC) for flying the logs in during the summer.
The hut is full of tourists in summer, but gets only a handful of parties visiting it during winter.
It takes about 5-6 hours to travel there from the Mount Robert car park, initially up a steep track on foot (1 hour) then on ski from there along the range. Exit can be via the lower altitude Speargrass track (e.g. in bad wx): slightly quicker, but less skiing. Remember to pay your hut fees to DoC.
crossing speargrass creek on the way out

    walking out

The un-named peak behind the lake is 1860m. Further around out of shot to the left is Mount Angelus (2075m).

The photo was taken August 2005.
Remember, that was what everyone says was the "really bad season", in New Zealand? Note: there's always somewhere with good snow in NZ, any year. Rainbow, had plenty of good snow mid season (a friendly little commercial ski area across the Travers valley from Angelus. with great backcountry touring access.)

Beeper, I thought you knew every Tassie location, but not this one! However, you are only 1 km out. I took the photo looking north from the Southern Traverse of Federation Peak near the start of the Direct Ascent.

Hmmm ... there are so many spires and crags in that area. My last guess is the climbing gully route on Federation, although I remember it visually being more difficult than that.

Sorry stallie, I was a bit confused as well. You're close (within about 4 Km?).
Graeme, The Eliza Plateau can offer some great skiing but very limited - great to say you've skied it. You need to get there immediately after a large dump and before the rain comes in and takes it out.

VSG - yep, that's where I was thinking... Just downstream of Albina, looking west. It was last century when I last was there, and seem to remember picking y way through the rocks then a long gentle gradient to the creek.

    Pretty much opposite Carruthers.
