This one, ie hunt for the mount, is a real doosey. The last clue I gave is quite telling. Although since you folk cannot think beyond the 3 leg syndrome yet, time for yet another clue.

A bitter shack resides near mi mates.
    Thomo and Macca patiently await.
Burnt we are, though near or far but damn if we go without our bloody bar!

My maps run out at Mt Thomson, presumably your Thommo, so if anyone's got Cobbanah-Tabberabbera topo, it shold be near centre top.

or perhaps it's just The Red Herring near Mt Valentia

    Your poor scone is fried?

You'll kick yourself at how easy the clues are once someone works it out.

But no, not The Red Herring near Mt Valentia.

    Keep trying...

    :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Even though the puzzle is solved, I still need to be enlightened Wolvy! I think I understood most of your second and third clues...

    1st line: hut is nearby
2nd line: Thomson & Macalister Rivers on either side
3rd line: both burnt, NFI about the 'bloody bar' though?

1st line: well it is a Mount
    2nd line: Mount Selma Road
    3rd line: Mount Selma Track
4th line: I assume this is filler [IMG]

But I have no idea how your first clue fits in with all of this?

So a quick explanation to the clues:

I'm a very handy mountain for more reasons than one. I've got 3 sexy legs guiding the dumb.

    Mount Selma cops snow.
Has a Trig point hence the tripod description of the 3 legs, to which one can navigate themselves.

A bitter shack resides near mi mates. Thomo and Macca patiently await. Burnt we are, though near or far but damn if we go without our bloody bar

The VB shed/shack atop at "Gap Getaway" private property which serves drinks on McAdam Hill isn't too far from Thompson Dam and Macalister State Forest region.

Mount I may be, my road you shall see, my track you may crack, got ur saddle n pack?

    Mt.Selma
    Mt.Selma Road
    Mt.Selma Tk
all near Oriental Saddle, Queen Bee Saddle and not too far from the National Horse Trail Track.

Wolvy and I went there looking for some back country skiing areas for the winter in burnt out parts - Mt Selma copped it bad from the fires, and all the undergrowth was burnt - except for these little blackened sticks about 15 cm high, which don't snap off or bend, and trip you up. Anyway, we found 2 possible spots there - one about 50m east of the trig point and goes down - we marked the way to that with big roofing sheets. It would be a nice blue run - the trees are sufficiently thin there to make good lines. The other spot, is more of a touring route along Mt Selma Track, which was closed just the other side of where Wolvy parked by a tree which fell over the track during the fires.

But far better for winter skiing and more accessible, is the fire-break they made between Cambarville and Woods Point. In parts, it doesn't follow the road exactly and goes up and over some steep hills. The 50m wide fire-break is totally devoid of any vegetation and bull-dozed to a very nice skiing surface. So you could drive along that road, park anywhere, climb up and ski back down to your car - nice steeps [IMG] Wait until after a southerly blast when Baw Baw and Lake Mountain cop a good dump, and that area east of Cambarville will have some of the best runs in the state [IMG] Now all that firebreak needs is some rope tows ..........

After the 03 fires our club named 'these little blackened sticks about 15 cm high, which don't snap off or bend, and trip you up' the 'black fingers of death.'

Lurking just below the surface they would grab hold of your ski just as you committed to a turn causing even the most proficient skier to face plant turn after turn after turn.

Also had the most ski and binding failures in many year...

That said, looking forward to trying some BC so close to home

Just a side note, what are those black fingers of death?
Are they roots of burnt out baby ferns?

Whatever they are, someone ought to do a study on them as they resist fires rather well. Those properties they have could be very useful in other applications. Eg: formulating a chemical replicating it's characteristics and coating the liquid form, our BC Huts, as a fire retardant???

Thinking about that firebreak, you could tour all the way from Cambarville to Matlock and back on it. At the moment they're still clearing up all the rubbish and burning it off (we passed about 50 fires - there would be another 100 yet to burn), then grading it, but it looks like they should be finished by winter if it doesn't rain too much (they have finished parts of it)
