Re: Where is this? No10

I thought I squeeze in a snow pic to remind us of the starting season - out of turn but shouldn't take long:

Re: Where is this? No10

Wow, I'm surprised I knew that one, happened to boot pack out of one of those bowls mid blizzard. Good times, great snow.

Does it have to be in Australia?

This one is relatively easy.

Yep, it does have to be in Australia, although someone occasionally posts a NZ photo. However that staircase makes it look like it's in Europe. Buggered if I know where though, I haven't done backcountry on that continent yet. I've been too busy getting to know the remote and interesting bits of Vic, Tassie, NSW and NZ.

OK Here's 2 Clues, it should now be VERY easy.

1 - Between 32 and 27 degrees latitude
2 - This unusual view of a better known feature is nearby

Girraween NP, near Stanthorpe. The Matchsticks?
Girraween it is, but the original pic was from castle rock at sunset (the cleared areas were supposed to help) - the "hint" was the sphinx, about 3K's away. Correct NP so close enough seeing most here are southerners.

Next Photo?

No I didnt - recognise the walkway at the top.

Have grand ambitions of hiking the gorge in the southern area of the park.

Re: Where is this? No10

Does this make it my turn? I have no idea how to post a pic. Can I email it to someone to put up?

Cheers,

Ben

Snow Blowey... were they really photos of Kaputar NP?
Certainly was. Had my eye on the northern cold pool late last week. Was pretty sure i was going to chase snow on firday night going by the charts. Called the BOM at Moree to get temperature data from the ballon data and they said it was -1 at 1500m. Anyway, had to travel from Inverell back to Moree friday arvo. The sky was filled with massive clouds with fuzzy tops (the type i'm used to seeing over the snowys on approach from the east) and there was sleety rain falling. It was cloudy over the top of Kaputar so i packed up the swag and the mrs and drove down.

We hit snow from about 1100m up and there was about 5cm on the ground at the summit and it was coming down nicely. After driving around for a while we decided to camp at a flat spot near the summit lookout. We'd been up there for over an hour and hadn't seen anyone else so we weren't to worried about camping next to the road.

Sleep was broken around 1.30am with a car load of sightseers. They hung around for a bit took some photos and took off - telling us we were mad on thier way. Anyway by this time word must have been spreading down at the Narrabri Pub because we had another three car loads of pissed people turn up between 2am and 3.30am.

Unfortunately it started raining around 5am and this ruled out getting the skis out for a novelty ski in the morning.

Trolling weatherzone i found reference to Kaputar and heaven forbid a photos that our first visitors had taken - including one of mrs and i asleep in our swag (luckily we had all our bits nicely rugged up):

Proof that it was Kaputar:

Same table as in my shot but before the rain started:

Meanwhile it snowed all along the northern tablelands in QLD and even as low as 500m at Murrurundi.

No quite firmly on the ground, in fact within 20m of a location that I saw posted in this or the last thread (having trouble finding it currently though, pretty sure I saw it posteD).
