Snowy is the person looking down into Lake Albina from thwe top of the knob you contour around the back of to get to Townsend.
A bit further along. Up above lady northcotes canyon. The last knob on the highest part of Alice Rawson looking north.

The shaded area on the right of the pic is the western end of the crags. The ****** on the rock is looking towards the sentinel.

Airfuego - Looks to me to be South Rams Head looking southish over Dead Horse Gap
Graeme - Not sure but looks to be up high in the Snowies, maybe Porcupine Rocks?
Majikthise - Doesn't look to be in Oz, maybe northern Italy or southern France
I think you might be right on the Airfuego pic, that chute through the rocks looks very familiar.
spot on.

not the usual angle that most people see the south ramshead from, as it was taken from just below the steep bit of the ramshead itself, looking due south.

Second one looks like it's taken from Muellers Peak, looking across the top of the Muellers Peak/Alice Rawsons Peaks Ridge towards the Crags.

But I'm notoriously geographically challenged.

#2 of VSGs is tricky

Got the crags in the far left background, Twynam is just out of shot on the top right and the western spur of Carruthers is in front of that...but I still can't figure out where it's taken from. Koko, what's Geehi Gorge? I reckon it's looking across Northcotes Canyon.

So yeah, I'd say it's from the western side of Muellers with the saddle that joins Muellers to Townsend in the foreground.

Geehi Gorge is that rather large gap in the landscape into which Lady Northcotes Creek debouches. It has a thing called the Geehi River at the bottom of it.

As I thought. Then I can't understand how you get the background to look like the other side of the Geehi River, unless you left your monocle at home.

Nah, mine is not quite a drive by location..

I'd say foreground is Alice Rawson, from Townsend

I just found my topo. I think you're probably right Graeme. That Crags-AR-Townsend are colinear in the photo matches up on the topo. Mueller-some saddle-Crags definitely does not. I thought that the dropoff from Townsend was far steeper, but on the topo that's only if you're facing SW.

Being a Victorian I only recognise VSGs second photo as the main range somewhere, but I reckon it is a great shot. Excellent.

But that means that I am right too. How can that be, when you think I'm wrong?

It was for young SnD, whose university course has not yet managed to inform him that most gorges have two sides.

North and West of Moroka, it one of those walks you see off the side of the rd and every time you go past say, "we should go there one day".

Close enough its a shot to the summit of Mt Columba in the Western Arthurs looking southwest over the Crossing River vaguely in the general direction of Bathurst Harbour so neither of the peaks you listed are visible in that shot.

However if you turn to the left a little..:

It always rains on me in tasi, havent often got a view like that one. What a beauty.

My brother in law climbed federation a coupla months back. Very hairy experience by all reports. Low grade climb, major exposure.

The only other friend who climbed it was very glad it was totally clouded in and she couldnt see a thing, including the drop!

sidetrack - is that conglomerate falls? If so, how did you get to the bottom?
Also, the very first photo in this thread - the background has been identified as Buffalo but where was it taken from? Is it from the camping area at the head of Camp Creek near Speculation?

LTL, 1st pic is taken from the Heli pad at the bottom of Quartz ridge and yes its conclomerite falls. Jump accrossthe creek at the top, walk straight ahead for a bit, circle back round to about 150m down from the falls. It a bit steep and slippery.

This one was off our map at the time as we were climbing Mt? when the pic was taken. We called it Doubleblack Mountain until we knew better.

Not sure if I remember the name. But may be The Govenors from Mt McDonald. Definitely the flat topped mountain in the distance is Mt Timbertop.
