Yeah I'll keep hoarding points in Amex then decide which program to transfer them to once I've got enough to do something meaningful.

SIngapore is best for availability even up to 1 or 2 months out

Others you need to book 330 days out

Some dude I know who is off to the USA next week will book his 2021 tickets in about a month.....

Heaps of new seats to Japan with new routes and changes and less demand...

USA and Europe is far harder on Qantas or Emirates

@chicski a friend of mine will be the first officer on your flight from SYD to YVR! You'll have to give us a critique on his flying :D. Are you spending any time in Vancouver?

I think it depends on your status level. As Q gold I know you can get access earlier than lower levels. Probably even further for higher levels.

We did Business on China Airlines brand new 787 toTaipei in December. Full lie flat, 1-2-1 configuration, excellent service.

I’m a lowly bronze, all my points are via credit card spending and bonuses. For the past 2 years I’ve been able to find business rewards seats to North America on QF flights during peak season (January). Plenty of options for economy nearly year round. A few years back we got economy on Xmas eve for 3 of us.

This trip I’d originally booked economy rewards and then some months later, business came up so I cancelled and rebooked. You just need to check regularly, try different routes and start looking early.

And often the fewer seats you're looking for, the easier it is to find availability.

True. And last trip we had to get creative due to school holidays. Came home via Fiji, stopover by a pool for 24hrs. Wasn’t so bad.

Speaking of points - do we have a single point of truth thread for points use? I can find a bunch of different threads around QFF and cards, etc but I'm wondering if there's a general one where the points gurus could impart knowledge?

I have a Wespac Black card where the points are going direct to QFF and a Plat Amex which is just acruing points for "wherever" and I'm now on regular flights MEL - YVR and would prefer to use AC direct as we're not always travelling when QF have direct flights. Starting to rack up Areoplan points and status as well and have no idea how to use those and, generally speaking, I'm as confused AF as to the best way to tie all this together for optimal use?

I think you need to choose one airline and concentrate on accruing. The credit card thread is good for tips and subscribe to the frequent flyer tips website.

I have to confess I have never got my head around AC FF booking. I’ve loads of Qantas points, and have had no problems booking multiple business class europe trips on points. The last few years I have done a lot of SYD YVR trips, mainly AC business, so have accumulated a fair few points. I have not really worked out how to best use them yet. Looks like they are migrating aeroplan as well. It would be good to get some tips on AC point use, like a good guru website

It may be, but Qantas is useless for travel to Europe unless you want to overfly and back track from Heathrow. Partner airline Finnair is pretty good for Scandinavia (transit through Helsinki).

Pretty sure I will be moving my Virgin points across to Kris (Singapore) and kiss my Qantas Gold status goodbye as Singapore has far more options for the travel I have done in the last few years and am likely to do in the foreseeable future.

Yeah I flew mixed Q/Emirates to Geneva a few times but since Dubai came off the menu I haven't even considered it.

I got hosed a few years ago, I got a points upgrade on Q for the MEL - DXB - MEL legs, then my GVA - DXB leg was delayed and I was shifted on to the Emirates flight to Melbourne and the upgrade didn't carry over. Wasn't too bad in the end as I got a whole row in economy but you got the feeling that you were a bit second class.

My main question on the whole points thing is how to value them in terms of surcharges, I can probably triple or quadruple the amount I put through the Amex if I pay surcharges but need to know if it's worth it.

There are articles on the points hack website that put a value on points.

I have looked at both those sites and follow on social media (there are other good ones such as Ilyflat and One Mile at a Time as well) but I guess I was just thinking this site has enough "experts", that maybe a thread for points hacking would be a good knowledge base here.

    BTW - it's actually https://www.pointhacks.com.au ;)

    www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au has all the answers.

But it sounds like you should be on a Star Alliance programme (There are a heap, but United, Singapore, Thai, etc.) but generally Aeroplan is considered crap. And unfortunately there isn't any Star Alliance carrier in Aus domestically.

You don't need to move your Virgin points as you will lose 35% of their value. You can book SQ flights direct with your Virgin points, not hard at all and will get much better bang for buck. We did Europe return trip in J last year all booked on SQ with Virgin points.

That's only for QF. For members it has to be one of the world's worst - very few award seats released, exhorbitant carrier charges for awards, extremely poor earn/burn ratios. If you are after QF awards, you are FAR better off using AA points.

Exactly. If heading long distance on business, then will pay for business class, particularly killer deal we got for Iceland trip with Finnair. Next week is private so will be PE with Singapore into Zurich and out via Munich. Qantas can't do that.

We did Sydney to Geneva 3 years ago with Emirates. Wanted to fly Qantas PE but would have had to to fly Dubai to Geneva in economy (Emirates didn't have PE and will only get it this year) so thought to save the $$$ and put it towards a week at a 6 Senses heels up. Would rate that flight as the worst flight I have ever had the misfortune to be on and am now a lifetime Emirates averse flyer. Emirates can EAD.

Really, the gold status is a wank. I get a gold tag on my baggage and lounge access that I would have got flying PE or business anyway. For trips like next week +0.95 Mk III and I route plan and then throw the bookings to a trusted (corporate) travel agent who always come up with better pricing than we can find.

I've had OK cattle flights on Emirates, but like I said earlier my #1 undisputed worst flight was with them but that was on an A340 which is no longer in their fleet.

No lounge access flying PE. Status is great if flying economy or premium economy. But agree it doesn't make sense if you are buying up the front anyway.

Depends on airline; some do, some don't. And many airports have independent lounges that can be accessed far more cheaply that an annual lounge pass or flying at a higher level just to get that perk.

Yeah the extra 10kg on Etihad Silver is great, though this trip we've bought a seat for bub as it's off peak and pretty cheap so we won't get near the allowance, 40 + 40 + 30 is tons.

232000 Singapore points for return to Euro plus $200 to $600 taxes...LHR taxes are a joke

Flight costs $6500 normally so $6000 if you ignore taxes

    6000/232000
    2.58c per point

So anything up to 2.5% surcharge is good IMO

Just digging deeper I can pay a major supplier with no surcharge if it's by the 7th of the month instead of the 30th, otherwise it's 1%.

It's Visa / MC only which makes it tougher though.
