There were some OK falls (25cm) up high over the last 24 hours. As per the forecasts, the temps are jumping around at the moment, and it's raining in the Village right now. The cooler air is coming in tonight and it's going to stay cooler for the next week or so, and if the forecast delivers, then it looks like the best case scenario would be a total of 50cm by Thursday.

Let's keep our fingers and toes crossed.

Snowfall is accumulating nicely with back to back fronts lining up. Unfortunately the avalanche danger is now the issue which is affecting opening more terrain and adding to the lift lines. Lifts breaking down doesn’t help also. That is inexcusable in my eyes.

Hopefully the mountain gets things in order soon after the holiday period is over .

I’m measuring 45cm so far on stake since midnight. Biggest front is still yet to pass!!! How quickly it can turn.

Bucketing down all day today at Whistler. There's been snow all the way to the Village, which is good. It looks like the temps haven't been as bad as previously forecast. It's starting to get chilly tonight and stay that way all week, with top ups until the weekend. Great news.

Finally got to have my first ski at Whistler today. I'm glad I waited. The recent snowfall has meant there's (almost; see more about the Peak below) top to bottom skiing, and today the snow kept falling all day and the temps were cool but not frostbite conditions (this is changing overnight as some dry and very cold arctic air moves down into British Columbia. Tomorrow Whistler will have a wind chill temp up top of minus 25c!).

I'd been wondering why none of the Peak, Symphony and Harmony had been opening. I heard today at Whistler the reason is avalanche danger and control attempts. Over at Symphony there's apparently a 12 feet deep slab that has been assessed as an extreme avalanche danger, but which is resisting all attempts to manage it. Try to blow it up isn't working, it seems, including some aerial bombardment. Blasting was happening at the Peak all day today. And at about 1pm, Harmony Chair was finally opened. The snow was deep and sweet, although as is often the case up there, it was a little cool and blowy at the top!

As this was a day trip, we parked in the nice underground "parkade" (as Canadians call a parking station) at Creekside and went up from there (Creekside Gondola (which was a little crowded, but actually moved quite quickly - I think it took us about 10-15mins to get on) then the Big Red Express) to get to the Whistler Roundhouse. A couple of warm up runs around the Emerald 6, and then we took the Peak to Peak over to Blackcomb to play around Glacier Express and Jersey Cream. The crowds over there were much thinner than on the Whistler side, and there was plenty of fresh snow to go around. Then back over to Whistler after lunch to have a couple of runs off Harmony after it had opened to a huge area of unskied terrain, and then headed back down to Creekside to head home (with a stop at the Squamish A&W for a root beer ice cream float)!

Here's the only shots of the day - it snowed all day, and I'm not a particularly good photographer, so that combination conspired to keep the phone in the pocket all day! There's the first snowfall of the season in Vancouver (a bit of a slow trip to Whistler this morning - it snowed all the way up there, and there were plenty of idiots driving way too fast for the conditions), and the line up to get on Creekside Gondola to get up the mountain.

Ok one for previous/current visitors to Whistler. Have hunted around for a guide for the day. Worth the $200 or just explore and find your way.

    Depends what you want

    1) Just general tour and see the lay of the land, workout lift structure etc ? Do it yourself. Also there are free tours run 11:30-1:30 each day run by volunteers which are actually quite good
    2) Have someone to guide you and take you places you wouldn't have the courage to go to by yourself? Probably not. The Extremely Canadian clinics or The Camp clinics do this, and are well structured and a better option than a random guide
    3) Find stashes of untracked powder that haven't been skiied out ? Only worth it if there has been fresh snow, and again the clinics and camps do this.
    4) Backcountry? Definitely need a guide of some sort

However, bear in mind with current avalanche risk options are pretty limited at the moment. Virtually all of the alpine is out of action, which is where most of the above is orientated. Also back country is pretty much the same

Edit : saw more of the alpine opened up the last couple of days :)

Subject to conditions and open terrain of course. Avy risk is improving which has opened more areas. With the area being so big I wanted to ensure we have an opportunity to ski the best bits without having to study trail maps all day.

Whistler is massive.... $200 would be worth it if you could ask to be shown some of the hidden gems and locals trails. You could spend 4 days and still get lost mid mountain. If you can afford the $200 I think it's a great idea.

I would definitely do one of the free tours at some stage. They are actually quite good, get tomeet a few people and get shown around. They do general tours of both blackcomb and whistler, as well as a blackcomb glacier tour. Meet up at rendezvous or roundhouse at 11:30. Tours for beginner, intermediate and advanced

Skiing in Whistler atm is insanely good. Today was one of those days 35-45cm of uncharacteristically light dry powder. This week Harmony, Symphony & Peak have all opened. On the Blackcomb side 7th, Spanky’s and crystal has been awesome.

Today was amazing. Didn’t stop snowing. Wind and visibility was an issue up high. If it keeps up tomorrow should be great. Still haven’t seen the sun!

Looks like it's going to be well over 4m of snow for January if true to forecast for the rest of the month.

Not bad after a pretty shabby start

We had a great day on Wednesday. No pics as weather not great after about 10am, but amazing skiing all day. We parked at Creekside and headed up from there right at 8.30am. Warmed up around Emerald, and then played under the Big Red Express chair. Harmony and Symphony finally opened around 11am I guess, so we made a beeline over there. Snow in amazing quantity and condition, but the wind and snow had started around the top of those chairs, and viz was terrible at the top. Our buddy not as a strong a skier as us, so we stuck to stuff he could manage on the blues and greens - he (and we) had plenty of runs through the trees on Jeff's Ode to Joy which we thought was the run of the day.

Earlier in the morning we'd lined up at Peak Express which was threatening to open, but it didn't open until after the conditions up top had deteriorated. We'd wanted to get our pal up to the very top and then ski down Highway 86, but alas it wasn't to be. We skied all the way down Franz's from the Roundhouse back to Creekside at the end of the day so there was an almost top to bottom run!

Didn't get over to Blackcomb at all - having too much fun on the Whistler side.

The forecast now looks like snow more or less non-stop to the end of January. We're then up for a full week at the beginning of February. Hopefully we'll see a ray or sun or two!

We were on Blackcomb yesterday (and today). Had a couple of lovely runs through 7th Heaven. Today had 30cm of snow but heavy. Was better in the afternoon once it got packed down and slushy. Still haven’t seen the sun, or any views!

Will be following you. One more day then onto Banff. Today was also awesome, snow was better yesterday, but still very nice. I love the big open bowls here, not so much a tree fan, but love the bowls.

Been here for 2 weeks. It’s been epic. Spent yesterday touring around circle lake and body bag. The back country behind Blackcomb has been literally untouched since the season started. Symphony has been awesome, but it’s been the last area to open after the storms. Blackcomb - chainsaw ridge, cougar and secret have been my pick of the terrain. My wife is team whistler and will disagree. Enjoy to everyone else coming - today it spewed down at least another foot or two and the alpine barely opened. If I were here another week, I’d be hitting bagel and west bowl.

Here’s some BC porn of our line into circle lake and then a shot of body bag.

Water falls around the streets at the moment. Sat it out today and also it looks like tomorrow. This warm front and downpour is depressing. Not sure whether this is a usual winter event for Whistler, and does happen during a season from time to time.

I went up the mountain today, and packed it in when I was soaked through. Very wet snow high up, and very wet rain down low. I was thinking about staying on, but think I will head inland tomorrow.
