we are in Vancouver for a few days in early December and thinking on popping up to Whistler for a day trip.

Wr probably won’t ski/board and was looking to do touristy things

We willprobably try out the peak to peak gondola and would love to see the glacier.

My question, is it possible to get up high enough to see/visit the glacier without skis on?

    Is it worthwhile?

    +1

We arrive 28/12/18, and have 6 nights in Vancouver before heading to SP. I am planning a day trip up with my 2 kids leaving at 6:30am to ski/board the day, then come back around 4:30pm. You can do it!

BTW, the glacier has snow all year long. Get the early bus up (you can sleep on the ride up as it might be dark most of the way). Head up for a day and do the glacier, peak to peak, and if you have time, peak to creek. That would be a massive day, early in the season. Maybe forget the peak to creek...

    Good luck mate!

Its an option and will decide when we know the weather. Unlikely ad we already have vancouver accommodation paid for and wo that’s extra costs

Did you do the Sea to Sky gondola in Squamish last trip?
Better still just walk up from the falls.

    A few things:
    - Blackcomb (the entire hill) may not even be open at that time of year. Whistler tends to open first.
    - Yes you can access it, but some walking would be required.
    - I'd take gear and use it as an excuse to get some turns in.

IMO it's worth waiting until you can ski all the way down through Blackcomb Glacier, for the best experience.

Peak to Peak is well worth doing and should be operational that early in the season.

I'd also suggest Sea to Sky in Squamish if you haven't done it yet. Maybe hiking the Stawamus Chief (weather permitting) or trying to spot some Bald Eagles too?

New lifts are open this year. There will now be a gondola from blackcomb village to rendezvous on blackcomb mountain. That means tourists / foot passengers will be able to do a loop, catching 3 gondolas. Whistler gondola up to roundhouse, peak to peak over to rendezvous then the new blackcomb gondola down. I think the resort will be heavily pushing that. If it is a clear day, it would make a good trip. However, if it is very foggy or cloudy, you might not see anything. If you can see the peak to peak from the valley, then you can be pretty sure the views will be worth it. There is an expensive type restaurant in the roundhouse (need bookings), or just standard ski lodge food in roundhouse or rendezvous

There are 3 main glaciers inbounds in the resort. Whistler glacier, which is not far from the roundhouse, where the t-bars run. There is the horstman glacier, which is over the back of the top of 7th heaven, between that and top of glacier express. Then there is blackcomb glacier, which is right over the top behind the the top of the horstman glacier.

When people talk of "the glacier" they usually mean the blackcomb glacier. That is impressive to see, just for the sheer size of the valley that the glacier lies in. Snow quality is always good in there are well. You can't access that without skiing or boarding. There are also days where you can't see your hand in front of you.

Lots of other touristy things to do in town, but pretty limited in one day.

Gareth, you should check out the sliding centre and take a bobsleigh ride. It's pretty safe, no one has died there for a quite a while now.

The ziplining at Whistler is also good fun, and not affected if there's snow or fog.

If the weather is good, then definitely do the sea to sky gondola.

I also second the suggestion of Vancouver Island. It's terrific. Victoria has some lovely sights, and the Butchart Gardens Christmas lights kick off on 1 December. They are absolutely brilliant.

Similarly, all of the Vancouver Christmas lights will be underway. Have you been before? I think Van Dusen Gardens is the best for sheer lights overload. Stanley Park lights are quaint and the Christmas train is something that a lot of Vancouverites do year on year (my Vancouver inlaws are amongst them, and therefore it's now become one of my own Vancouver Christmas traditions). Capilano Canyon is good for the combo of lights, suspension bridge and tree walk. I think it is worth getting up there during daylight and sticking around until the lights really get going after dark.

Seeing the glacier is not very exciting...it covered in snow so just looks like another massively long wide run in places. If you want to experience it....ski it. It's a fun thigh burning run top to bottom :)

five trips to vancouver and no whistler?

why do you want to visit the glacier particularly? in december it looks like any other ski bowl

best way to see whistler in winter is with skis on

But if you've been to BC 5 times it deserves a chance.
Even if you don't like the brand (understandably so now that Vail owns it) you've got to love the terrain.

Its probably not going to be mad busy at that time.....so defo worth a visit. Super drive....sea to sky highway, through horseshoe bay etc. You should also consider the Squamish gondola. I havent been on it but looks spectacular.
I wouldn't bother with Blackcomb glacier if I wasnt skiing it or heading over the back somewhere.
A lot of people rubbish Whistler.......but there is a reason it has won best Nth American resort multiple times. Its immense. Massive vert. Has terrain for everyone....even inbounds.

....also, as an alternative day trip, you could do a lot worse than a sea plane day trip with picnic lunch in the mountains. Departs right downtown at Harbour airport.

I've skied Whistler late March twice and 'crowds' have been fine. I think I lined up for a few minutes at 7th Heaven lift or whatever it's called.

I don't recall a flight being that expensive.
I've been on a bunch of seaplanes in the area and I can't think of a better and more readily accessible way to see glaciers, the islands etc. Weather dependent though
