I'm still struggling to get overly excited about surfing, its just not as fun as it was pre injury, its so stupidly busy and competitive in the lineup, if i paddle to hard for a wave my calf cramps and kooking it a fair bit

I was just getting the hang of the peculiar argot of BC XC Skiing and now there is another sub dialect: Surfing. I need subtitles for some of these posts.... ;-P

@mr Tee, now add kayaking, canyoning, rock climbing, mountain biking and fishing to your list.

All one needs is infinite time and money (not really).

Surfing invented hippy before hippy became common and hippy invented grunge and before grunge invented hipster. The baby Boomers, the Beach Boys, Rock n Roll, surfing - Californian youth culture.

It’s a continuum really. Cashed up post-war youth with leisure opportunities.

Hipster is a 1930’s term - probably post the flappers - probably being hip related to hip movement w.r.t. dancing - see the roaring twenties - another post-war generation youth culture thing.

The term ‘hip’, like cool, has its origins in early 1900 Jazz related African American English.

Yep ... over 50 yrs now ... not daily but .
Something you can do dawn til dark ... nearly every day and if you pick up a board from a throw out ... costs nothin. Oh wax .
Crowds are crap . Just sitting out the back has is own delights .... never boring .

Surfed for many years as a kid before I skiid.
Same stoke , similar vibe when you got it to yourself.
Best on your own or with cuppla friends.
Crowds and the usual " small percent " ruin it.
Will do both till I die or the body ( knees n back ) gives up.

At 52 years of age I’m transitioning. While I still have a short board, I’m surfing a couple of hybrids (one 6’4” MOTE Peterson style thing, and one 7’4”) and a longboard. It’s time to make some concessions to myself for age, so I can keep surfing and enjoying it as long as possible.

To the OP I surf and love it, just I don’t love it as much as skiing.

Local surf schools have a big clean ou t this time of year.
Check them out if one near you.
Better tho looking at getting a fibre glass or epoxy board.
will last longer and get you paddling & travelling across the wave a lot quicker.
    Long term for the win.

A softboard is a safe place to start for someone who has been out on the surf just twice.I do not plan to spend much on a softboard. One will progress to epoxy or fibreglass in a year or two.

Softboards are safer for the people around you, compared to learning to ski or snowboard the worst you’ll get is a rash maybe a couple stitches, I’ve had 2 stitches in my chin in almost 30yrs surfing

Softboards are for kids and soft cocks. Had to say it, sorry. LOL
Get a bunch of real surfboards of different sizes (2nd hand), paddle them around catching waves of different sizes and different shapes (beach breaks, point and reef breaks). Then at different beaches , then different countries learning about stuff for the rest of your life whilst meeting people that are into the same stuff but from a different cultures and or perspectives.

See you over at the Surf thread. Many people who live in Melb. are out of the water until restrictions are relaxed. Surfing is banned on the Mornington Peninsula under the Level 4 lock down.I have broken my nose, bruised my ribs , cut my foot etc. while surfing but have not been nibbled on by a shark or had surf board fin rip me open, yet. That day will come. "You will be in constant danger the whole time.... and loving it "( GET SMART)

Grave dig . Me too, moved from coast to NE Vic ,changed to skiing in 1981.
Learning curve in surfing is much harder and in Victoria much colder.
Crowds and hassling gave me the shits , skiing is much mellower.

Pt. Leo is my favourite place for surfing.I have two surfboards and a quiver of wet suit gear. I got a Trigger Brothers custom NUKE 2 mini mal and a USA made Long Board. I have been surfing every week there when the restrictions allow.

Use to surf Pt Leo in the late 60s my Dad or some other father would drive me.
About a 7'3" single fin, then shorter , then Rolf Arness won Bells brought in smooth surfing and went to about 6'9' Pat Morgan shaped like a mandolin with the widest point towards the back.
looked like a narrower version sharper rails of the board on the left.

Skiing V surfing: surfing has it over skiing when it comes to gear - surfboard, leg rope (wetsuit optional) there's no paying for parking, lift tickets, resort entry....... However to become a competent surfref you need to invest heaps more time than ski or boarding. For me one really good wave in a session equals about a full day of quality skiing in terms of satisfaction. Super lucky to be able to enjoy both pastimes!

Made some really good boards and experimented heaps with box rails and keel fins. Terrible. I owned one.

Love surfing and snowboarding, both similar to us, but surfing in winter is much harder than going snowboarding, you can snowboard all day long but surfing in winter is cold. I have about 10 surfboards and only 2 snowboards.

If you surf 3 years day in day out you’ll be pretty good, but you’ll need to put in a few more years to be near the top of the pack at your local.

If you ski every day for 3 years you’ll be up there.

Gotta remember that in the 70's the original snowboards weren't allowed on slopes. We had to try and carve on very long and thin skis.
    We somehow did it though.

I prefer 2nd reef but Crunchy Point on a good day is very good. Suicide point needs quite a bit of water to cover the rocks and swell to make the waves work. You could break a fin on the rocks if the tide is too low . I have been dragged across the reef near Crunchy point having kicked the board out . The wet suit saved me from getting badly cut up. I know 2nd reef really well.
