It is WA and yes, within the Kimberleys.
Remember that the Kimberley Region is larger than the State of Victoria......

Ok, for those who might know some geography of the region, the highest peaks of the King Leopold Ranges top 900m asl. My mystery site is the highest altitude BOM site in the region at just under 600m asl. I have camped out there in August and its bloody cold haha.
Its the most northerly site in WA to record frosts and does so most winters.
and yes the name of the location has a royal connection.

The frosts were very confusing, I was trying to find some places in Qld with the required elevation but that wasn't working.

I've added it to my Google Places list for a future trip.

South of Cooma
Inland on NSW Northern Rivers coastal strip. Taree I doubt would get that much rain soaybe somewhere at foot or in lower part of escarpments. Bellingen?

I was thinking maybe near Cradle Mountain, there's a few hillbilly looking towns deep in that hilly country.....
( edit ) yep it is Butlers Gorge I reckon too
