Not a bad article from Ricky. He told me last winter he was researching it so it has taken some time to put together. I gave him my view as a horse owner (which is well known here) and also gave him advice not to go to the locals up in Monaro as a supporter of culling. He managed to get a fair bit out of them.

I don't think the Federal court action stopped anything on BHP as yet. Trapping is underway.

A friend who lives in the area was getting nasty prank calls on the topic and after a long period of the calls and getting nowhere with "the authorities" they had a firm chat with the local constabulary and amazing enough the calls stopped.

I grew up camping in the Alpine regions on the southern side of the border and loved the vast number of native animals that inhabited the area. It was a very special place to visit and as one of the interviewee's described, you never thought twice about gulping down the water. Then a few years ago when the snow was not happening in early June, I spent some time down at Pinch River camping area and I was disgusted at the destruction and filth caused by the Feral Horses. What grasses they hadn't grazed down to their roots were trampled anyway, so how the native animals were expected to survive without feed I know not. It was a turning point for me. Pristine wilderness it was not. This apathy to protecting the park by authorities then makes a mockery of ski resorts that have to jump through years of red tape to put in a weather station or to add a few underground pipes for snowmaking and so on.

Team Bears had enough to do with chainsaw plus crow bar etc.
But we did open the track up a bit so management can go see the problem on horse back!
We were looking for markers to the track down into the Cobungra....we thought we saw some...but they were the patches on the fireheads of horses looking at us looking at them!

Bleeding hearts from Singleton in NSW complaining about the ‘lack of transparency’ in the army’s aerial cull of brumbies.

The electorate is coming after Barillaro (not an aerial cull, but maybe just a GetUp ambush)

    - wonder whether Labor are willing to make a reversal of the NSW legislation part of their platform....probably not - small target politics.

Shame people cannot get as passionate about the national disaster called feral horses in KNP/Vic alpine as they do over fish kills in the Darling.

The ALP has made noise to "Reverse the Brumby Bill" but time will tell as they cannot do.much while the Barilaro faction holds power. The pro development Monaro lobby are firmly behind Barilaro as he is currently throwing money all over the place. The various chambers of commerce and local government is are very pro development and don't care either way about horses in parks

They will sacrifice the KNP to the Nationals brumby folly in exchange for swings, roundabouts and higher density zoning.

His statement was captured on video so there is no backing down from that. He stands a pretty good chance of re-election so hopefully no matter who wins sanity will prevail. The wider hangers on pro brumby groups have alienated a lot of people and Cochrane duplicity is now well understood. I kinda feel a little sorry for the core Jindy old local family group who really just wanted to chase horses on an annual basis but ... incompatible with the times and the need to protect our ever decreasing natural environment.

I must be doing something wrong because I can't find it. Can you post a link? I have looked at a number of the other Jindy community type FB pages also. If it is damning enough then it should be sent to a media source.

Thanks guys. I am a bit FB illiterate. What great questions can now be asked of Barilaro. How does he intend to achieve and immediate 50% reduction? His answer was to form a committee. We know that committee will be stacked with pro horse people and very few scientists. On the other hand, if a Labor government forms then all we get is a count, another committee and the repeal of the Act. No aerial culling, but there will be 'management'. If all the argument about culling to do with using helicopters then use ground shooting techniques. The independent seems to think cattle should be allowed back in the NP. The shooters and Fisher bloke just wants to wear women's underwear. Glad the video stopped at the Animal Justice League. At least she will not get in.

This video should be sent to the media and I am surprised none have picked up on it. The Australian Brumby Alliance are concerned there has been no management at all since 2017. No horses removed. I think they are part of the reason why.

Just to add to this with information today. There is Federal court injunction of trapping southern BHP but the horses around Nelse area are exempt. Cameras have a stallion (the new one) and a few mares entering the trap for the salt lick on several occasions and just waiting for the word to set the trap. They are hoping this will happen in the next week or so. PV are preparing information for the Federal court to counteract the heritage claim but the process appears to be dragging out in the courts. There are reports the Nelse mob have split again and may now be 3 mobs now. We need better intel on this so if you are out and about in the Fitz's/Kelly's hut or Nelse area then photos of horses and a count would be good. Need to know if a stallion is with the mares also. Wild stallions will push off mares once they have been served so it may be just mares associated with another mob hanging around together. The stallion comes back later to see if they are back in season.
The deer shooting trial has finished and data is being collated. Shooting will continue on a broader scale for the time being and they are no longer restricted to the boundaries of the trial. Next shoot on the 15/3.

I forwarded the above video to Don Driscoll (one of the lead enviro scientists on this) and he was unaware of Barilaro's comments. Found a recent article on him in the SMH so forwarded it to the reporter as well using the term 'backflip' on Brumby bill to catch attention.

Perhaps those injured could seek legal advice and then sue the government. When we camped there a few years back there were no horses in camp but they came onto the ridge just above just on dusk. We have had them come through camp at Native Dog (Cobberas) but only at night.
Strange behaviour but then again look at what happens when dingos get too familiar. A previous program on the Bogong High Plains identified and removed any horses which were aggressive consequently I have had the experience of getting quite close to some of them and others have said the same. This could in fact lead to a dangerous encounter for those not experienced with horses.

I had two bad experiences at Pinch River. On one occasion a mob ran straight past me in scrubland and the other: a stallion acted very aggressively, snorting and raising up directly in front of me. Whilst I wasn't too frightened having grown up with plenty of stock around, I did have to keep eye contact whilst searching for a decent tree to step behind if he charged. It is definitely not the sort of experience you would like to occur with kids, so not a go-to camping place for families IMO.

Any any action to reduce feral horse numbers in KNP must also include the surrounding State Forests which also have huge numbers and no discernible barrier that they recognize between the two (bit like having a reserve population otherwise).
Bungers (the big ones) were good to carry back before the ban in NSW (frigging nanny state laws for numpties).

Also had a stallion challenge us at Cowombat flat but there were no trees. I totally agree and maybe NPWS should close off areas to the public due to safety concerns. That would produced a good reaction. Of the mobs around Nelse, it is the mares I was more concerned about. They were quite aggressive but the stallion we know quite well to be very quiet. That is the little black one. We will head up to find the other stallion soon but he is the one going into the trap so his days are numbers. Taking him out will mean the other mares will rejoin the first mob. When a mob splits, they take off to new ground and we need to avoid that happening.

It’s getting interesting- Fairfax providing extensive coverage of a Koori ceremony in Kosi which draws attention to the damage brumbies are causing - the approaching NSW elections are obviously drawing attention to the issue.

Ironically, Barilaro’s higher profile as Nats leader is having the effect of increasing public awareness -

Maybe his overreach on the issue may in the end have the consequence of the mainstream moving against the brumbies’ - leading to a cull.
