Will we ever see another 50C in Australia?

There used to be an interesting and fun WZ thread with this title, and in summer we'd track high temps across the country. Thought with the incoming heatwave it might be nice to revive. Put it here because couldn't see where else it should go, but Mods please move if better elsewhere.

Anyway, up into the 40s by 9:30am in the Eucla region, though puzzling that the temp dropped from 42 to 33 in half an hour at Eucla even though the wind is still from the north...

Bloody hope not, but with the thermonuclear heat in Perth the last few days ... more than likely to happen and happen more regularly going forward

50c is a tough nut to crack..... mind you according to FB posts it happens every summer in Australia... lol
The 3 verified ones in the Modern Era ( ie Stevenson Screens ) are Oodnadatta twice on consecutive days in Jan 1960 and Mardie in Feb 1998. Wilcannia had a screen temp of 50.0c in Jan 1939 but this reading hasn't gone through the stringent BOM verification process as yet, so doesn't appear in the digitised records. It is a plausible reading given nearby Menindee had a 49.7c on the same day so pretty well 'spatially coherent' ( no don't ask for an explanation.... I am just a dumb arse rigger....lol !)
There has been a few close calls in recent years, Port Augusta, Moomba, Marble Bar, Roebourne, Emu Creek, Onslow have all had a few 49's....
50c is the big one.....be interesting to see what happens in the next week or so....

I've done tarmac walks in >50° air temp in the middle East.
Hot as balls, sweltering on the pavement also with all the machinery, hot air vents etc running I don't know how much all that adds
Don't miss that
Balls be hot, and sweaty for sure. Eww.

30 is ok as long as you don't have to do anything. i'm ok up to 35 if i am indoors with a fan or in the shade.

our forecast is 36, 40, 42, 41, 42, 34, 36
oh to be back 100m from jervis bay where there was always a breeze

Yep, if you don't need to do anything high temps in a dry climate are quite bearable. Our dec to Jan 4wd trips to Birdsville area in the 90s often saw temps approaching 50. Trying to sleep when it didn't get below 35 was ordinary though and something we never quite acclimatised to.

To be honest, I was in Melbourne in October/November, and one day, it was 34C and I was out and about..... no problem, because the humidity was low.
But 34C degrees in Tokyo can be hell.... high humidity, dripping everywhere. I'd prefer 42C in Melbourne to 32 in Tokyo. And then 38 degrees in Tokyo is a whole other thing!!! ;)

The maximums in South Australian are aligning with the 850hpa temp data the models forecast for today perfectly, for example 28C at 850hpa for Ceduna which achieved a maximum of 45C today and a 850hpa temp of 25C for Adelaide which got to 42C maximum (with the rule of thumb adding 17C onto the 850hpa temp for sea level). If this holds true for the next few days the maximums should pretty much play out like this: Ceduna - Wednesday 46C, Thursday 48C Adelaide - Wednesday 44C and Thursday 46C

Ceduna now showing a max of 46.5 at 3:12pm on BOM web site. So if that's confirmed, even higher than 850hpa prediction, and 2.5C over the forecast max.

Yes sometimes there can be a spike in temp above that 17C temp, if we get ‘lucky’ then there is a chance of 50C for the Nullabor weather station on Thursday with 850hpa temps of 32C, there would also have to be no seabreeze and the proper mixing of hot air to lower elevations but if everything comes together perfectly on the day then there is a slight chance...

A few December records broken in SA today, but no super-high temps. Tomorrow looking very interesting though.

My father told me that the news said the national average maximum temperature yesterday was 40.9C... is that correct for all national weather station? Or is that just for Victoria? Or....?

Some sort of average of daily maximums from across the country is what I'd assume.

Ceduna the hottest station in South Australia with 42C at 9.30am, a full 4C hotter then the same time yesterday - if we simplify things massively that would mean a maximum of 50.5C today based on yesterdays maximum of 46.5C - obviously it won't be that hot but certainly over 49C would be a real possibility...
