Yep, RIP Midget. Although I never met him personally, he always appeared a class act whether that be articles, interviews or stories my shaper tells of the old days around Manly.

I just love the creative idea of Midget, a true inspiration in the water. He surfed poetically.

Makes me want to shape a nice mal and surf it.

RIP Midget. Met him a few times mid-late 1970's as a grom hitch hiking back from Stanwell Park (Midge was hang gliding). Kindly gave me and surfboard a lift home.

Surfed Waits yesterday arvo - was a small 1-2'. One Bloke out there was absolutely shredding. Saw him pull into a few funky double up sections for some mini barrels.

My surfing fitness has fallen over since moving back here. Struggled to stay out longer than 2 hours.

When I picked up the new 6'4 for Indo, I was chatting to my shaper, who worked his early days in the 60's @ the Keyo factory, about doing up a board from that era that I rode in the 90's at Kirra. Eight foot something, tear drop shaped pintail that rode like a mal on the nose but gunned it and turned well from the back. One day.

Midget with plenty of style out of the water as well..

He was always great to watch on a mal or a SUP, so clean and tuned in to it. Never full of himself either, just did his thing and loved it,

Had a good 45 minutes or so from about 10:30 this morning on the bank north from where I surfed the last two mornings - the bank the mal club was using yesterday for their contest. Smaller again and got a bit full and slow as the tide rose but beautiful water. Couple of the older mal guys out there too, just having a quiet session. Didn't talk to them particularly, just let them get any they wanted :) Well worth a paddle, just I should have got there an hour earlier and had that extra hour too. Photo is after I finished and a normal (non-set) wave.

I didn't mate. I would've recognised him if he was there. You sure it's Tim's vid? It looks like it was from Saturday.
Mark was late on it, he only got a couple while I was there - but dominated those he did, haha.

You couldn't pay me all the money in the world to sit in that channel and film Ours... No fkn thankyou!

Nah wasn't Tim's vid, he would of been on a ski if he went. Was tossing up Sat or Sun, both similar IMO.

Yeah was a good weekend of waves, fun as 2-3ft point waves, mixing it up between my POD and 7'4 singly..

    Love this joint..

Crescent if very very addictive. I've only been in Autumn, crowds look more friendly in deeper winter but you'd probably want a bigger window to get waves.

And this is why we now have decent banks. The beach has a series of indentations, creating rips and deep water channels.

Yeah banks are finally forming at North Steyne again, been straight as fark since the June 6th swell.

Queensy has had waves, but yeah been surfing North Steyne the last week or so for the first time in 2 months!

Best time for lack of crowds would certainly be the middle of winter outside of school holidays i.e. now

What a lot of people don't know about is the area that lies from there south but that's all I'm going to say.....I'm sure Craig knows exactly what/where I'm talking about ;)

Good article Craig. Actually surprised there hasn't been more talk about this sort of thing happening up and down the coast since the big storm, after all we know it was a once in 40+ year event if not longer.....

Checked one spot on the way through actually, looked fun but not as good as what Creso would of been producing so continued north.

Banks between Queenie and NS certainly looked good on Sunday, but mostly pretty straight further south of the rip bank I was on around mid.

Mid to South is normally pretty straight the majority of time unless we get a decent pulse of E/NE swell over a prolonged period of time, from experience it really needs to be a good 3 foot + to sort out the sand

At a minimum I've always got Juddy in tow (my black lab) so I'm well familiar with the non-national parks areas to the south, that's where I camp. I've thought about going further south first thing in the morning when the temps are ok to leave him in the car but normally there is more than enough variety in the non-national park zone.

This is what I was getting at when I posted 'banks are crap', haven't checked my old Broulee-Moruya spots since the NE'r but at the 'laws place a bit further south there is one particular rocky nook that was a sand bank semi-wedge fun zone, now the waves are rolling across the rocks as basically all the sand is gone.

Interesting read Craig. I can only assume you're familiar with Big Rock in Bondi?
I must admit I've always had my doubts about the stories I've heard about this 235-tonne boulder but I guess all is possible with a swell exceeding the magnitude of 6th June... Fascinating...

Yeah I have heard and read about that before, those accounts don't really solve it do they. But after the recent storm I can see it easily being thrown up there!

Just to put it into perspective I just googled it's relative weight as it's hard to comprehend...
"230 tonnes is about one-and-one-half times the weight of a House."

Astonishing to me as I was within several metres of that exact rock (shooting) for the event in June. Must've been in the 8-10m range swell minimum

Always wanted to get down deep south to surf Saltwater when it's on.

1/2ft grov at D'bah this morning, would rather wet icy slopes TBH.

Settling for watching part 2 of this JJF series..

I went for a surf at North Palm Beach yesterday afternoon (in the water roughly 3-5pm) thinking the swell was going to continue to die to nothing through until after the weekend and I'd better sneak another session on the tail end of the current swell.

It was very much a "summer afternoon" sort of surf, just with almost nobody in the water: couple of feet, onshore/cross-shore wind that was just a bit too strong, so it was mushy peaks with some added weird currents and backwash. Worth getting wet (as always) just a lot less so than the previous 3 days. I think the morning with an offshore wind would have been so much better, but I didn't really mind grovelling around and practicing late mush takeoffs and trying to ride confidently with weird currents across the bank (increasingly as the tide dropped).

@FourSquare04 that explains why when I've experienced a NE'r I have the novelty wave to the immediate south of the nobby to myself ;) - it's a deceptively heavy left hand grinder that can form there.

Just look at Google Maps, the immediate geographic feature starts with a Q, but sure the spot may be named T something....

Great vid, as was the E60 one last week. Absolute legend!
Love a novelty wave, that one might take the cake.

Yeah, much the same here, thinking it might be the last wave for a while. Although, into mid next week is starting to show some potential up this way. I'm not a huge fan of surfing small mush but I like what small mush does for my surfing, as far as having to stay light on your feet and needing to generate your own speed etc.

Real good video, loved the whole story to go along with it and just not the surfing.

Now this is a beauty as well, zone out for 10 minutes..
