Hoping i might have got a GoPro sorted, though might miss out with most of the numbers pretty much all taken in the shipment arriving this week, am hoping there's a chance to get it before a possible Hotham trip mid late next week.

That looks epic snowballs, i've heard its pumping down there.

Good stuff snowballs. I'll be heading down that way next month and hoping to get some waves. I don't need it that big anymore. Maybe 1/2 would be good. I would say fishos would be my pick for today fighting off the grommets and longboarders.

Some of the last of winter and its still possible to surf in boardies up here, i've been more than comfortable in the spring suit this year (September and early October are normally our coldest water months). Need some waves.

Nuh. Surf bikes should be chick's bikes. Heaps easier to get on and off with a steamer or towel on.

3-4 foot this morning. Got the slight offshore before it tended too far south. Nice to have some waves.... pancake all week.

Rode from the bottle shop with a slab under the arm last night, was a bit of mission. Girls bikes are good for riding with boards (will build an unreal beach bike this summer, surf rack, big fatty tyres). I ride the skiddy pretty much everywhere surf checks, bakery, work etc but won't leave that beast anywhere.

Nice again this morning for the early. Late night dinner at friends, two hours in the water at dawn... I'm shagged. Life's good. Off to the local school fete with the grommets to eat sugar and be rad. Enjoy the winter.

No updates from me for a while - my wife had our first little girl the 19th. Back in the water this weekend for the first time in a while.

Saturday 3' and very occasional 4' sets at Bondi. Sunday (today) 1 to 2 foot but actually better.

The three weeks out of the water let me get my back a lot better, and consequently I'm surfing better. Note to self - stretch back a lot.

Congratulations buzzy, not much happening on the north coast. I had been planning to get down to Hotham for a slide but might have to put in a surf trip somewhere. Japan or the states a possibility in feb.

I got a few 3 footers out woonona after lunch...crowd went from 10 guys to around 60 after the wind stopped..i've never ever seen more offshore conditions...to give you the heads up the strongest wind gust in the state was recorded bout 2km round the other side of bay
few kegs, couple of lads scooped into a couple of solid stand up barrels...
fair bit of talent out in the water, as is the way when its a NE swell, offshore combo

You should remind him when I pushed him to the wire in the quarters of the Northern Beaches schoolboys in around 1980/81. From 4th I really pushed him to greater surfing heights!! Forget 2nd and 3rd...it was me pushing the limits of progressive surfing (how bad it could get, probably). I claim all credit for his 2 world titles.

Not too bad at Bondage this morning, i.e. until the SW wind got into it around 9'ish. Bigger sets around 2 metres (W@nchor scale) with faces well overhead. A couple of nice waves before tendonitis (left arm) got the better of me. Liking the new board as well, currently set up as thruster for the larger waves. Will go back to quad set up when it gets smaller.

Nice waves at Bondi the past couple of days in a rapidly diminishing swell. 2-3 foot yesterday, and 1-2 foot today. Had a nice left to myself for qa while. Everyone was crowded onto a better right across the rip, leaving (mostly) the left to me. For 45 mins anyway.

Incidentally, in the spirit of blogging my surfing experiences like it's a pathetic soap opera, finally my surfing is returning to a reasonable base level.

PPS Donza, I reckon the big change is the equipment. I don't reckon the mindset has changed *that* much. We still do bottom turn, reos, snaps, carves, tubes etc. Far less 360's though! Still Slater seems to have brought them back into competition fashion. Even airs were in contemplation then - certainly Potter in the early 80's. I just reckon the same mindset has been improved by better boards and better trained surfers. Surfing was an act of rebellion then - not a sport. Not for most anyway.

Just to add to that by the way on a good day now I reckon I surf better than I did on a good day "back then". Back then I surfed every day with some of the best surfers in Australia in a highly competitive environment - not necessarily contest competitiveness - just competitive amongst peers. Anywa, even though I was a much better athlete then, and much better relative to the general surfing population, I reckon modern boards just make it much easier to surf better. You're not fighting your equipment.

Its a combination of mindset, equipment, training and wave venues IMO
the mid 80's up to when G-land debuted was full of shite wave locations. much like the QS.
however I reckon the 80's judging fostered a particular type of surfer....

thoiugh there have been some transitional surfers from generations ..
Tom Curren, Occy, Richo, Archie, Sunny all spring to mind as surfers who surfed really well in their young years and have thrived in their older years.

I have to say as a late 70's/eighties surfer I find the notion of the dream tour surfed only in perfect waves a bit annoying. I reckon the tour should include some dribble events too. We all surf dribble most of the time and I love to see how a good surfer surfs dribble. I reckon the ASP should have at least two major metro events - one in the US (Huntington) and one is Australia (Manly or Bondi). Just me, and it'll probablh never happen. But I just reckon the world champion should be the all round champion in all surf conditions, not just perfect surf. I remember reading someone saying they thought Bells should be dropped from the ASP because it wasn't a progresive enough wave. I just found that sad on so many levels - hte disrepsect for tradition; the disrespect for what is unarguably a great wave for on the face surfing; sad that such a narrow view of what is surfing defined this person (presumably only 4-6 foot hollow waves fit).

Anyway, back in the real world I surfed 0-1 foot dribble at Manly yesterday, and 2-3 foot fantastic waves at Bondi today.

Very nice waves at Maroubra today. 3 foot, possibly 4 foot. Certainly overhead and a bit on the sets. Nice lefts in particular.

The transition from slothdom continues. Ordered a new board, which is basically a standard (but beefed up) shortboard. A Miller V-Skate (6'10" x 21 x 2 7/8"). Probably sounds heavy volume but I'm heavy at the moment (albeit slimming slowly). It'll be a bit more refined than the Waterskate I'm surfing most of the time at the moment, but has its limitations as wave sizes increase - I especially notice it backhand.

Huge waves off the Tasmania's west coast this morning are among the biggest recorded ever with a maximum wave height of 18.4 meters recorded at 11am this morning. Beating the old record by 10cm's.

I had a french guy here looking very confused and wondering why i don't have big wave guns for hire [IMG]
He looked even more confused when i told i don't surf any bigger than a 6'3 here on the north coast.

Nice waves at Maroubra the past couple of days. Looks bigger today but very south. I'll make a surfing decision after brekky with my new bubba.

Report following morning cycle - Bondage was closing out, Marobura looked the goods (also handles the SW wind better than Bondage). If swell keeps building bombora behind Bare Island should work (occasional wave there this morning).

Terrible surf at Maroubra today. Terrible for me that is. Only around 3 foot, but ok. Not as good as the past few days though. It was hard to tell if a bigger swell was pushing past on a deep south swell, or reports of a monster swell are exaggerated. We'll see.

Surfed DY point this morning. SOOOOOO many people out! A few broken boards, lots of people over the falls but fun! probs 6ft+ on some of the sets.
