I thought I'd better go for a drive at lunchtime and see what all the fuss was about.

Shoalhaven Heads was just a mess, so headed to Geringong for a look.

Werri Beach. There was one keen bloke out having a go. His first effort was washed back to the beach, so he had another go. The rain got too bad and the kids to antsy so had to leave before seeing how he went the 2nd time.

Not while I was there. Just got washed back to the beach and he walked back around to try again.

Neilson Park (inside Sydney Harbour) just before 1pm today. Pretty weak, but the odd one coming through...

It's a once a year thing to get a swell at neilsons but it's always epic when it happens because of the placement in the harbor.

Some epic pics of Ben buckler today...

Plenty of guys out at JB with all normally quiet spots having activity ranging from head high plus at Huskie to lids at the ramp and plenty of stand up paddle boards at plantation point - JB seems to be a magnet for all the old crusties (including moi!) in these conditions.Always fun to see novel waves.

Hey tfitz what were the size of the waves at Plantation Point, for future knowledge. I surfed it at bout 2ft on a 4 metre SE swell last year.

An insane photo and video on Coastalwatch of two guys surfing Bennelong Point with the opera house and the bridge in the background. Some people already calling it a fake. I don't know, looks pretty real to me. Nice wave too, not just a little spilling one for the SUPS.

The Opera House briefly had a small man made wave back around (or just before) 1970 when it was being built. It was caused by the wash of the (then) much larger Manly ferries.
Another break at that time was Bluefish Point which appeared whilst the North Head sewerage site was being built. There were probably pictures in Tracks magazine back then.
Didn't see the video on Coastwatch, but Ocean swells at Circular Quay, I don't think that would be possible.

edit: here's MSN's view of the fake video:

Yep, watced it a few more times, definitely a fake. It certainly grabs your attention first up. 10 out of 10 for imagination though, quite funny....

Scored some very nice 4-5ft reef breaks at the 'shallows' on Tuesday, protected from the SE wind. Some very hollow lefthanders a bit closer to where they are going to build the Marina too.

Has anyone got some information about what damage the Marina will do to the waves close by. Man made intervention seems to have sutffed up a lot of other surf spots over the years. It would be a shame to lose this spot, as there are not to many spots on the south coast with decent SE wind protection.

Are they supposedly building the marina more towards shellharbour town or towards Reds?
You're right, not too many places that virtually face due north, on the east coast in general....I remember scoring some pretty good waves in this particularly wave rich region....Donz might know more given that it's near his 'hood....

I have been down the south coast the last two days. On Tuesday I got some waves at Sandon then at Shallows as well. I caught a couple over on the sucky left, not sure what its called? Ill post some photos tonight. Yesterday I surfed around Gerringong then hit the Nerriga Rd back to Jindy.

The Marina would have a significant impact on the surf IMO. Although, I don’t think it will ever be built.

Apparently the Marina was given final approval by Council recently. Had been proposed for many, many years. It appears on the colour fold up map of the Illawarra Region (Cartoscope Maps, I think?).

The proposed area for the Marina is about 300/400 metres back towards the Shellharbour township where the creek/lagoon drains into Shellharbour South beach. I wish I had my camera to get a shot of the hollow left, it was a pretty impressive wave and it started working on high tide!

Yesterday I scored 'Collers' down at Ulladulla, some very nice 3-4ft rights for about 200-300m on the 9ft HP before heading back up the Clyde to Canberra. Nerriga Rd is a good run now, especially if your comimng from north of Canberra then through Tarago.

The marina could make an epic right wedge for south shellharbour beach. Not all brteakwalls have made crap surf...ai contraire..

We've been talking about the potential wedge from the Marina for years and years. Well, until I moved away.

Back in high school when we used to bodyboard Kiama wedge and Mystics all the time the thought of an epic man-made wedge closer to home made us drool.

17 years later it might actually happen...

So I take it that the hollow left between shallows and the proposed marina is redsands? The marina may create a right wedge into south beach but is there any opinion out there as to weather it will damage the other two waves on the south side?

I'd like to be a reds surfer but there would have to be very few crew out or I would just be sitting out there watching. I'm not good enough to get my satisfying quota on such a great wave competing with all the guns.

I think the Marina would ruin Shallows but Redsands is further out towards Bass Point on the other side of the coal loader. I don't think the marina would affect it

Yep, just did some google searches and redsands shows up as further towards Bass Pt. Still like to know what they call that sucky left between shallows and the proposed marina. I reckon shallows and that sucky left will get ruined by sand being moved in the wrong direction.

It's called Pikers and it hardly ever works (at least it hardly ever used to). It won't be any great loss. It often looks inviting, but once you're out there it's impossible to sit in the right place or the wave closes out. That said I have had it amazing once.

Its up there with bombie suck and that left off the wall near the boat ramp inside reds that are up in mysto status.
Reddies is such a frustrating wave. When its like this. South swell and it pushes.. BP gets a few sick ones but

What is the little right ledge out past Reddies called? Its within the Bass Pt reserve. There were some nice waves coming through there on Tuesday.

Thanks, they both had some good waves...

There is also a nice slab behind Kiama harbour that looked good. Even the left in the harbour looked fun yesterday.
