The snowmaking on Wombats should reach Falls Creek Express by the 2008 season. What was completed last year made a huge difference and extending the skiing period to FEX will be a very popular move with many.

Now Snowmaking on Ory's Trail next hmmm that would be nice for those of us that reurn to town that way.

I remember talking to someone some years back that was working on micro jet snowmaking that could be used to add snow to the towns roads, now that would be nice in the cooler evenings walking around town.

Will be even better when it reaches Halleys Comet.

Seriously, that's very good news. Long overdue.

What changed to make it possible to snowmake this area when in the past we have been told again and again snowmaking on Wombats was not viable...........um................

My guess is the lodges in the area are no longer opposing it as "too noisy" for their guests and now realise it would be an asset not a hinderance.

Ah......... but that was never the reason given, it was elevation and aspect,ie technical issues, best tell Selywn, Baw Baw and low runs of Buller about that, was suggested...............

It was always the reason I gave here when asked and I was given that answer by those on the hill.

Not the reason espoused here by the falls guru.

I always thought it was about the noise too.

That's true. ASB in the past posted with great certainty and authority, allegedly straight from the snowmaking team's mouth(s), that it was too hard to do snowmaking there. He did, however, stop making those claims some time ago.

I had been told it was difficult to make snow there however the system installed is very advanced, the ran power as well as water and air so they had a range of guns available.

Several years back they dramatically increased the available air and this made putting in Wombats far more viable than previously. Its a very long and expensive run for snowmaking and Falls Creek should be praised for the effort that many early skiers will bennefit from enormously.

If there is any truth to that story, it shows the lack of understanding by Falls management of the huge number of visitors who use that route for accessing the mountain. Perhaps the decision makers need to follow the punters and day trippers around from time to time, rather than thinking they understand from inside the office.

Your fishing Hilo everyone knows how important Wombats is, it was where I trained dozens of disabled skiers, its normally the first major run many skiers achieve and it accesses many lodges.

There were many reasons it took a while to get snowmaking there not at least was the cost, it has been one of the most expensive snowmaking projects on the hill.

The great news is, we have it now

ASB - you're right. It IS excellent news. It will make my visits there, probably also with disabled skiers, more frequent.

See you on the snow. [IMG]

HiLo - they have wanted to do it for a long time, this isn't a new decision.

Going back a few years it may have been technically difficult and so they invested in Drovers and Towers and Scotts and Ruined and have done an amazing job there.

Now it is feasible it has been held up for at least 2 years possibly longer by lodges that didn't want the noise at their back door. I think 2006 changed a few minds there and planning went ahead last year to make it happen for 2008.

I remember Buller one year made a policy that they wouldn't make snow during skiing hours. As soon as things turned sour it was rightly forgotten.
