Lindsey had a win in the second downhill in Cortina - looking very happy to be on top again
Tina Weirather second and Jacqueline Wiles third
    Mikaela was seventh
in an interview she was asked how it felt not to be on the podium
    ‘it’s my fifth downhill ever’

That should certainly spark up interest for next weeks race in Garmisch.
Dressen is from Mittenwald so it is very much a home race.

Does a pretty amazing job with the hand held camera given what he is skiing. Some of the other camera runs I've seen aren't as steady as his. He says he does that for Downhills and Super-G's but for Giant Slalom it is just too hard - needs both hands hand much more for the skiing. Thomas Sykora does the camera runs for slalom with helmet cam.

Normally he has microphone attached to helmet and hands off the hand held one, but hard to tell on that video. Can see other videos on his website where it is clear.

it appears that he talks to the other camera, with a camera in one hand and the mic in the other
    then he’s off
I know it might have been edited, because it changes over to his camera, but it looks like that’s how he has gone down the hill
    it seems easy for him

Some big gaps. Marcel a second behind Henrik & Michael. Only 7 from first 15 so far within 2 secs.

Julia Mancuso did her retirement run at the Cortina Super-G, dressed in full Wonder Woman costume including cape
results: Lara Gut - Johanna Schnarf - Nicole Schmidhofer

What a great breakthrough for Dressen. And to think he won it in the gliding section below Steilhang, not often you see that in WC DH.

Yes. He said his training runs on Steilhang were very ordinary but he nailed it on the day - this inspired him to focus intensely on the gliding section. His Hausberg section was also superb.

2nd run has scheduled start time of 20:45 local which is 6:45am AEDT (6:15 for me). Breakfast racing.

the splendidly named Ragnhild Mowinckel is leading the ladies’ GS at Kronplatz after the first run
I don’t recall hearing of her winning a WC event
she was very happy with her result
she’s leading second place, Marta Bassino by 0.01 second
[edit: she got third in SG at Val d’Isère in December - her only podium]

surprising to see Mikaela have a mini-stack
her second dnf within a week
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen before - she’s very consistent

Always amazes me how well the top guys visualise the course. Often see them up the top warming up going through the course with hand motions. Today though Marcel basically recited the course or at least a critical part out loud in the start hut. Focused.

Visualisation has to be right up there in the list of what separates the greats from the rest. Commentators and coaches focus mostly on skills and line, marketers will tell you it's skis and tuning. But those are the visible, tangible factors that can be dissected and discussed with the aid of high frame rate video, digital overlays of multiple athletes and so on. Much harder to examine visualisation because it can't be seen or compared, but it's absolutely critical.

Remember the athletes get just 30-45 minutes to inspect the course after it's set, usually time for just one slow sideslip down the run to look at gate placement and how this interacts with the terrain. Athletes and coaches work together to dissect each direction change and how it is to be handled, then they will combine the individual gates into sections and memorise those. Most of all though, the very best have this rare ability to picture exactly how the course will flow at race speed, and are correctly positioned at all times as a result. And then of course the second run of a GS or SL event will see a complete reset and they have to inspect and visualise all over again. If you're in the lower seeds, you don't get on the course until it's been run pretty hard by the first 30. What was smooth newly groomed snow during inspection now has ruts and bumps to contend with as well.

Lindsey Vonn was leading in the first leg of the combined at Lenzerheide but Wendy Holdener killed everyone in the slalom leg and Lindsey ended up fourth behind Wendy, Marta Bassino and Ana Bucik

in the slalom at Lenzerheide Mikaela looked like she had it sewn up after the first run, but she was a dnf in the second so Petra Vlhova got it
Wendy and Frida 2 and 3 as usual

Lindsey won the DH at Garmisch Partenkirchen - number 80
her teammates Laurenne Ross and Jacqueline Wiles both crashed in a similar part of the course, the latter with ACL tear plus tib and fib fractures
    no Pyeongchang for her
