second downhill at Garmisch has just started
fourth skier Stacey Cook just hit the wall - strange accident because she was travelling in a straight line. and her skis went somewhere else
a bad weekend for US ladies, so close to the Olympixs
I notice Mikaela hasn’t been racing

sure, but Lindsey looks in peak form
it's funny how there are people who tend to come second
Wendy Holdener in slalom tends to miss by a second or so, even when it's not Mikaela winning eg in the Stockholm night event last week

Olympic alpine speed events are notorious for random one-off winners, especially in the mens DH.

A pretty good weekend for Marcel Hirscher in Kransjka Gora.

On Saturday wins Giant Slalom to secure the Giant Slalom title for a 5th time.

On Sunday wins Slalom to secure the Slalom title for a 5th time and also the overall title for a record 7th time!

12 wins for the season on top of 2 Olympic golds.

And all that after coming back from breaking his ankle in training last August!

Marcel goes into the history books with Tomba and Stenmark.

apparently Mikaela has sewn up the overall title as of her 3rd in GS at Ofterschwang overnight
Ragnhild won - she's getting better results with every race

Final week of the World Cup season starts today in Aare, Sweden. First up Men's downhill, then Women's downhill.
Only the top 25 for the season in each event qualify this week.

Stared snowing in Aare, so mens downhill has been rescheduled to 13:15 local time. Women's race still at 12:00 at this stage.

Short race though does make for some extremely close times. Vince leading but top 6 within 0.2 secs after first 15.

Another top 10 for Breezy Johnson, a much better season for her. I worked with her parents at the LL season opener. Hardworking salt of the earth types, drove 12 hours from southeastern Idaho to volunteer on the race and spend a scant few hours with their daughter as she'd been away at a series of pre-season camps.

amusing moment at the presentation for the women’s Super-G globe to Tina Weirather
she’s from Liechtenstein, and the anthem ‘Oben am jungen Rhein’ is the same tune as ‘God save the Queen’
the Eurosport commentator apparently didn’t know that and he said there would be issues about this
then he reverted to his familiar stuff about Tina’s parents
if he knows them so well, how come he can’t pronounce ‘Weirather’?
    it’s been years now

Lots of speculation in Austria on Marcel Hirschers future plans. He isn't giving much away at the moment saying he will be considering options in the coming months. Hasn't committed to continuing next season yet. Also some suggestions he may do compete in more speed events. He has said previously he is almost certainly not competing at the next Olympics.

Normal order resumed. Marcel does it again ahead of Henrik.

His 13th win of the season which equals record of Stenmark and Maier!

Very strong winds again in Aare, so the Womens GS has been cancelled.
So Rebensburg wins the GS title.

That also means Austria get back the Nations cup for the women just ahead of Switzerland after losing it last year to Italy after a run of 18 years. The men though have held it for the last 26 years and the overall run is now 29 years.

    that’s a pity
there was potentially a contest between Viktoria and Tessa, though one which would probably depend on the former crashing and the latter winning

Bugger. :( The mens slalom has just now also been cancelled due to the wind. Can't remember that ever happening before for a slalom.

Hirscher had of course already claimed the slalom and overall titles, but misses the chance to set a new record for wins in a season. Will have to be content to share it with Stenmark & Maier with 13 wins.

    Final slalom standings.

The winter that won't end. It's been a tough one in most regions north of the equator. Large late season snowpacks won't necessarily translate to big skier numbers either, people have been living with winter for so long now they just want to put it behind them and move on. Once people can work in their garden or hit a golf ball or ride a bike, they ditch skiing in a heartbeat.

Marcel will finish off the season with a bit of heli-skiing in Canada before getting some sun on a beach somewhere, to see how long he can last doing nothing. Possibly not very long.
