Just signed up for timing crew men's week at LL in November got me jazzed so I thought I'd start the thread now.

Word on the street is the LL men's event will get the same schedule as the women do - 2 DH + 1 SG. To be confirmed by FIS.

Abundant confidence in the west with vaccine programs rolling out quickly. Alberta government is particularly expansive and has all but guaranteed the Calgary Stampede will go ahead in July. Not sure what the race will look like for us volunteers - shared accommodations and communal cooking seem like concepts from another world. Six months is a long way off.

Nearly there! Sölden races this weekend.

Meanwhile Hahnenkamm committee have announced increase in prize money. Total prize money for the weekend will be €1,000,000 with the winner of each event (SG, DH, SL) getting €100,000, 2nd €50,000, 3rd €25,000 etc. Interesting that while the most prestigious one is the DH the prizemoney for all 3 is the same.

Handy backup, but English coverage. I'll stick with the Austrian coverage :)
English commentator was awful, I almost fell over when he said his name at the end of the coverage and I googled him and found out that he could, in fact, actually ski.

Had 9 SG points at one stage which is pretty handy, but he spoke like he was a cycling commentator who skied recreationally and was chucked in the box.

Always was a bit of an odd dude but was a great skier. One of those guys with effortless-looking fantastic technique.

Bugger. Just after Roland Leitinger scored his first World cup GS podium he does his ACL for a third time in training at Reiteralm. So once again season over. :(

Volunteers will be heading to LL in a couple of days for Build Week. Snowmaking and A-net construction already under way. Natural snow has been scarce so far but there is some in the forecast. FIS calendar confirms men have 2 DH (Nov 26, 27), 1 SG (Nov 28), same program for the women a week later.

Parallel slaloms in Lech/Zürs this weekend. The only one for this season.
Qualification in the morning, then finals for top 16 run early evening under lights, so very early hours here.
Piste in good shape.

Those Alge start gates for dual and cross are the bomb. All sorts of geek features, although the simplest one may well be the most effective: drag racing style "Christmas tree" lights to count down the start. There's a loud start horn too, but when the crowd gets going they drown it out.

ladies’ parallel result

Andreja’s first WC podium and she wins
first podium for all three
one Slovene and two Norwegians, no Austrians or Swiss - FIS has a guessing competition in which I have scored no points this season
note photo has competitors 1-2-3 reading left to right although that’s not the finishing order

I think I heard or read somewhere that these races are the only parallel events this season - hopefully I didn’t mis-hear/read that
they’re a bit of a novelty event but the format means a fair bit of one-on-one skiing to watch and the camera work is fairly well managed
[although there’s a point about half-way down the course where the camera angle makes it very unclear ie who’s winning]
on another note it was WC race number 300 for Lara Gut-Behrami, though she was eliminated fairly early

Yes, this is the only parallel event for the World cup this season. I don't know if it is included in the Olympics, probably though.
Some racers take it more seriously than others. It is certainly a bit more unpredictable, probably the T20 equivalent of ski racing.

In the break between the 2 men's run they ran a segment on the recreation of Egon Zimmermans Porsche jump in the 60's by Aksel Lund Svindal.

Good result for the Austrians. Christian Hirschbühl from Vorarlberg narrowly beat Dominik Raschner from Tirol in the final. It was the first ever podium for both highlighting the unpredictability of this form. Hirschbühl was the master of the red course, coming from behind in each round to win through.
