Mikaela had already given up on the slalom globe and had said she was aiming for the overall, as well as prep for the Winter Olympics
she just looked bewildered when this happened
she was well ahead on time at that point

The women's slalom scheduled for Flachau was moved to Schladming because of the Covid situation in Salzburg. It will be run tonight as a night slalom (breakfast for some of us) on the same Planai run as the traditional mens race which runs after Kitzbühel in a couple of weeks time.

Only 3 Katharina's starting though tonight as this time it is Katharina Truppe who has tested positive for Covid. :(

Chiara Mair skied that vertical set near the bottom really well. Making up a few places.

Mikaela recovered well in the second run
that’s number 73
very emotional at the end - weight of expectation etc

Start of Lauberhorn run in Wengen delayed as one of the forerunners crashed and is being helicoptered out.
Weather looks good though.

Interesting to see how they all opt to check speed on that upper narrow traverse, some checking speed on a longish turn, some like Feuz doing a couple of short wedel turns and Kreichmayer even threw in a quick snow plough.

2nd Wengen downhill. Kreichmayer leading currently. Odermatt though again highly placed and dominating the overall title.

Sofia Goggia stacked in the downhill at Zauchensee, looked not too terrible at first but worse with each of the many replays
hopefully won’t damage her standing too much - so dominant this season
anyway, a great result for Lara

Seems Kriechmayr didn't do any training runs for Wengen DH and also that a positive covid test didn't reach FIS so he only had to quarantine for 5 days. A few Swiss team members seem to be a bit miffed. Regardless skiing a DH without a training run takes a massive amount of courage.

Women's overall I think now is a duel between Shiffrin and Vlhova. The two techies are 300 points ahead of Sofia after she missed a round and crashed in the most recent speed week. On paper, Mikaela has the edge, as she can expect to pick up reasonable points from SG events where the track suits her skill set. She doesn't need to start in DH races, but has the option if the points gap is very slight.

Can't see anyone getting in front of Odermatt for the men's title unless he is injured.

Watched a report on Austrian TV from Kitzbühel. First training run on the Streif today. Race had initially been configured to allow 25,000 spectators, but in the last couple of weeks has been limited to just 1000 which has basically killed business in town.
There has also been a slight change to the course with a redirection just before the Hausbergkante to reduce speed for the jump. I think that was the bit where being carried quite some distance (40-50m?)

Kitz first TR canceled. Second TR, Kilde and Mayer fastest. No surprises there. Always a mixed bag in training, some athletes choose to sandbag a bit, others go 95%.

Beat Feuz is certainly one of those that never shows his full hand in training, but is always there on race day.

Seems to work for him, Feuz has the palmares. At my very, very modest racing skill level, I couldn't imagine skiing a different line in training than in race, the extra speed generated changes all the lines and jumps. So few chances to train on world cup courses, it's a rare event where all three scheduled TRs actually happen. Key reason why downhillers mature so much later than tech racers - it takes years to truly learn the courses.

I was a bit supprised that Mikaela wasn't in the SG at Zauchensee, though her various social media postings suggest she's focusing on training for the Winter Olympics
maybe even entering all five events - that's been suggested before, and she didn't do it

Quite a bit of snow forecast for the weekend, mostly on Saturday, so they are now scheduling the slalom on the Saturday and the downhills on Friday and Sunday.

Meanwhile Marcel Hirscher having recovered from his motorcycle crash is having some fun by being a forerunner on the downhill on his own brand Van Deer skis.

Interview with ORF commentator Oliver Polzer in Kitzbühel just now while snowing lightly. He suggested that they had received permission to use some drone footage for the race. Ironically it will be the first time it will be allowed since the incident with Hirscher at Madonna di Campiglio in 2015 now with Hirscher back as a forerunner. Will be interesting to see if they use it in todays training run.

Snowing quite solidly in Kitzbühel now, windy and limited visibility. They will try and start training from the Alte Schneise.

This is the alteration to the Hausbergkante to check speed. The bold red is the new line - more like a Super G.

They are using some drone footage following the skier some distance behind. Also using much lighter drones than back in 2015. I think I heard them say they were 11kg back then, 600g now!
