    hi all

don't think I've posted this yet ... we have the date for the 'southern hemisphere' world tele day. Its the weekend of Sept 2 & 3.

As usual, we will hold something at Mt Hotham, and there are also plans for something in the Snowies.

If you're keen on coming to Hotham, pls check the facebook page at some point. A week or so before the day we have a poll to decide whether we ski in resort or go backcountry for the day.

There's normally a few people camp at JB Plain and make a weekend of it. All tele, AT, splitboarders most welcome.

I'll be there with bells on Cam, I haven't missed one yet! I'm not sure if I'll be camping this time, I might have to check with @stansi to see if I can slum it at Wongungarra again.

    Hi Cam,
I didn't come on this last year because I am soooo beginner. Is it suitable for beginner, mediocre tele skiers?

    hi
most years people have been intermediate to awesome (I'm definitely in the former category). But it probably depends what we end up doing.... I do a poll on the facebook page a week or 2 from the event to see what people want to do - resort or backcountry.

So my advice would probably be to keep an eye on the page closer to the event, then make a call.

If we go for a tour, then not probs at all with beginner skiers, and if we're in resort, we can break into 2 teams - people that want to do harder stuff, one to do more mellow. But I'd definitely say come if you're keen and it will be fun.

I'm definitely up for a mellow tour on the sunday and everyone is welcome to join.
    regards
    cam

IMO Hotham isn't that user-friendly for beginner and intermediate telemarkers particularly the groomers on a busy day or when the corn is mounding. Falls provides more mellow terrain both on and off piste.

Yes, you're right. Its been happening at Hotham just because I tend to spend most time up there.

Happy to shift it to Falls Creek next year. Its the first saturday in September - lets lock it in!

    Interesting. Thanks.
I think these days here in Oz there is actually some awareness of the avy risk prob cos of things like conversations here, workshops run by Falls Ski Patrol and the courses offered by Damien and others. I think awareness of ice slide risk isn't nearly high enough by contrast.
FWIW when doing lift-served tele now if there's any awareness of my difference by others riding the chair I get nothing but interest and sometimes admiration.

I will triple check the date with Josh Madsen, who came up with the world tele day idea, and likes all the southern hemisphere events to be on the same day, but lets definitely hold it at Falls Creek in 2018 and assume at this point that its on Sept 1.

OK. I can find nothing other than an interest expressed by that Club. There's no confirmed or recent details on their website.

Cam Walker may know more as he's organising the Hotham version or else contact the Club - http://www.nordicskiclub.org.au/

Hmmmm. I'm having a bit of difficulty getting there this year, My usual ride is tied up with family commitments and the reasonably priced bus is full.

I don't suppose anyone has a seat available heading from Melbourne or surrounds on Friday? More than happy to public transport it some of the way in order to meet up and of course I would share in petrol and gate entry costs. Please PM me if you have a spare spot and we can see what can be arranged. Cheers, the poster girl.....

    thats strange re JB Plain.

You can't miss it if you're paying attention. Driving from Hotham its mostly fairly winding road, and there is only one long open and straight section of road. As you're driving through that bit, the JB carpark is pretty obvious and clearly marked on your right south side). About 250 m down the hill from the parking area is a hut thats open and has bunks etc. Lots of camping just below the road down a gentle slope.

Thanks @almontyrat , got my bearings now.

Sooo you can drive from JB Plain to Loch Car Park and actually park? Or is it a big ask to find a spot on the 1st weekend of September.

Or is the better plan to ski down to Dinner Plain and catch the aforementioned bus?

Just need to work on the leave pass now.

If you drive to Loch you will be stung the $48 bucks or whatever gate entry is. If your dollars are important to you, ski/drive to Dinner Plain, catch the bus to central, ski down Village/cat track/slalom gully and catch the heavenly chair to the Loch shelter (assuming you will have a lift ticket).

If you are planning on touring and wont have a lift ticket, then driving to Loch is your only option.

Thats great! Travel safe and see you there.

Next year we will hold the VIC event at Falls Creek, so that's a bit closer for you.

I'm off to splitfest in the morning, then various other mtns, with limited email during the week, may not check in here. So if people keep an eye on the website they will know of any changes, but plan is:

    • meet at the shelter at the top of Heavenly Valley chair at 9am on saturday for 9.15 start. At this point the poll suggests we're going sidecountry ... will confirm this when i check in on thursday.
    website: https://themountainjournal.wordpress.com/world-telemark-day/
    faceboo poll:

Looking forward to seeing some of you wonderful people there

Pay for resort entry on line here: http://www.mthotham.com.au/plan-my-trip/travel-to-hotham/resort-entry/ $47 per vehicle per day starting at 3pm extending till midnight the next day.
You can also park temporarily outside the RMB office (roughly opposite Zirkys) and pay $52 in person in the office.
No sticker is issued. Number plates are scanned at both ends of the resort and there are random checks of parked vehicles by resort staff with tablets.
