Just down the road from Lake Placid is Mount van Hoevenberg

This was the venue for the nordic and biathlon events for the 1980 olympics. It is an excellent ski area with 50 km of guaranteed snow. Here is a link to the trail map.

They installed a snow factory in 2017. A pretty amazing piece of kit that allows for snowmaking no matter what the temperatures are. Here is a good write up on the snow factory and what a game changer it is.

If you are looking for a less formal setting to ski there are the trails around the Adirondack Loj. Here is a trail map link.

The Adirondack Loj is run by the Adirondack Mountain Club, and is an excellent place to stay. Inexpensive compared to staying in Lake Placid and a nice way to avoid the tourist mess in town. The food is very good.

Cascade Ski Area links into the Mount van Hoeveberg trail system with 20 km of their own trails.

I have never stayed there, so I can’t comment on their lodging, but the trails are quite nice.

As far as the COLD.... I can’t say that I ever noticed it. Mostly cause I’m sweating my ass off from the skiing.:cool:

Yep, it can be pretty cold in the NY Adirondacks. That's where I learned to ski long ago as I was growing up in NYC. North Country School is pretty much across the highway from Mt. VanHo.

There is a regional ski forum that includes a directory for nordic skiing. Don't necessarily have to go all the way to Lake Placid. If you have any questions, Peter Minde is the resident XC guru on NYSkiBlog. He lives in New Jersey.

How does one reach Mount van Hoevenberg from NYC as tourist/ foreign visitor?
If this is going to happen for me in Jan. 2021 I need to get the facts and get some $$ together.
Look at this snow report. The USA uses inches not cm.s. The cover is 35 cm max. off piste at present and only 12 cm on the corduroy groomers for Nordic skiing.

That is not that deep. Could more experienced East coast USA skiers tell me when is the best time to spend a week or so XC skiing in NY state?. I would be looking at a late Jan. 2021 visit.
