No commission on KVB. Just that $2k minimum.

Used to be THE place in Sydney or Melbourne, now with the minimum it's less suitable for all comers.

That is a good rate. I'm getting 77 to 78 in WA. Does anybody know where to get a good rate in WA?

go to Citibank. Get their Citibank Plus account. Withdraw at ATM's in Japan fee free. The Citibank rate is very competitive and comparable to KVB

Heading to Nozawa on 28th Dec., will be there 3 days. Want to know how much Yen I shall bring?
I have not yet purchased lift tickets (3 days), fares for transportation (Chuotaxi and Shink), and skis rental.
Reason for my asking, not sure if Japan accepts U.S. Visa card? I tried to book Chuotaxi w/ my U.S. visa card and it got rejected.

Thanks in advance for your input.

    Merry x'mas and happy holidays.

Whatever you do don’t change cash in Japan. Will lose min 10%. Best is just to use ATM at the airport when you get there with a Citibank Plus or ING Card. Other bank cards are fine, will just cost you more.

First year I haven't exchanged any cash at all before a trip. It was sitting on 82 for so long too.

Haven't exchanged anything yet. KVB want a minimum exchange of $2000. I need to see how much I had left over from last year's trip. Maybe, it won't be so painful. But then...there's the credit cards :(

Still time to apply for a Citibank Plus debit card if you haven't got one. Good exchange rate, no fees. It will save some bucks compared to a cc.

I'll second that. Its dropping so fast... not good for the trip at end of Feb. So should I pull the trigger and buy JR passes now or leave it a bit... hmmm.

Was supposed to go into KVB today but cancelled the appointment (you have to book now!) as AUD is at the lowest rate in over 12 months :(
Leaving early Feb so hopefully improve before then

Yes I have been watching this with some annoyance. I have done the Japan trip when it was at 68, don't want to do that again. That was in Niseko when they had 100 yen Ramen.

Buy is about 73 at the moment though was advised that if departing later Feb then maybe wait. Could be good advice or here comes 2009 all over again

    Yep.
    Same here.
I’ve done the exxy trip in 09, off the back of an exxy Euro family holiday trip with a fortnight at Zermatt the year or so before. Exchange rates can bring the pain alright!
I’ve got a bit of cash leftover from last year, car is hired, accomodation costs mitigated by the fact we have rented it out until we arrive, and needs are simple these days. Hopefully won’t hurt too badly.

Yep, someone fed kitty silicon balls and it is indeed bouncing.
One of the financial people this morning did make the comment that January is a crazy month for currency due to the holiday period. A better indication of where the YEN will be is near the end of this month. If you are traveling in January then this does not help.

Quick question regarding the ATM at Hasuike in Shiga Kogen. My friend tried getting the bus from Ichinose this morning but it was full so mission unsuccessful! How difficult is it to ski to Hasuike and walk to the post office? Is it far from the nearest run?

I did this Yen run last season. It's a 5-10 min walk in ski boots.

I've paid for most everything, JR passes just yesterday, except some yen as cash, which I bought today, wanting to rule a line. If the AUD recovers a bit well, there may well be more cash needed anyway so no worries.

Nice little upward trend since the new year. I'm going to hold on for the moment... I might bite the bullet if it hits 80 in the next week or so though.

With regard to yen, does anyone know if the jr east passes bill you in yen?? You can only select a foreign currency and their 'rate' is not good, 45000yen worth of passes works out over 50000yen when you convert the aud back to yen, its no longer the purchase out of country 1000yen discount.

Yeah I noticed that too, it moves around, cost me $229 AUD when I got mine last week. Now it's up to $234. Weird thing is the exchange rate has gotten a bit better...

Hunt around. Most on sellers will add their little cut. Plus also fluctuating currency.

I found these guys to be the best value when I purchased last season https://m.japan-rail-pass.com/mobile/
