Conditions are tragic by Japanese standards with hardly any snow for the last three weeks, so I filled the day with a casual drive from Chitose to Niseko, a little walk on the edge of lake Shikotsu where I saw some fishermen and summer things half buried in snow, Ramen for lunch and getting a hair cut to kind of tidy me up for Interski.

Once I got to the hill I ran into too many people I know and feel to far into the social thing to take any pics. It was great to join in on a Telemark Instructor training session with NBS as well. The bottom third of the hill is firm with death cookies. The top bit of the nighta area has ok snow, but it runs out way too soon. With not much snow in the forecast I'm kinda glad to be working most of the time I'm here.

Yakatori for dinner at this tiny place run by a grumpy old couple. I now rate tongue and diaphragm Yakatori. After dinner I tried my first chu hi after dinner. I was disappoint, 2/7 would not drink again.

Before work tomorrow In looking forward to some XC skiing and an onsen.

Today was another day with a slow start. I awoke to chooks and views of Yote at my friend's house. After a lot of confusion and saving wayward tobogganing children at Asahgoaka I managed to find some cross country skis, for free, because no one hires them in Kutchan. Despite how old and dodgy the gear was I had a gorgeous time tooling around the cross country trails on perfect corn.

Then a soak followed by some interski work in Sprout cafe, which served a nice espresso! The evening was work again with a great bunch of skiers followed by dinner at an Izekaya in Kutchan where I discovered that sing ray fin is really tasty.

The snow on the mountain is still decidedly Australian, but it's been snowing tonight so I have my fingers crossed for something better than dust on crust tomorrow.

Enjoying your TR thanks. That XC track looks like it needs a machine over it. Its not a bad bit of track though. Retro gear from the building at the bottom of the Asahgoaka lift?

I pushed my summer legs and pudgy body by spending the day with one of my trainers while he ran a Telemark Instructor course at Hanozono. The bottom of Hano really looks different, the development is a lot bigger than I expected. About a cm of snow fell overnight which skied quite well before it warmed up. After then it was classic Oz, slushy then crunchy.

The loop at the bottom of Asahgoaka and the big loop were both groomed and track set. There were a couple of little loops off the big loop which wern't groomed. With the spring conditions and classic skis it was fine though.

After a couple of full days of work I've had a lazy day with a walk up Yotei to keep the legs moving. Down low it was drizzle which changed to snow when I got to the trail head near Kyokoku. The snow started as dust on crust, after a bit of altitude the ridge I followed was still variable but there was about 10cm of creamy Aussie style freshies on the lee side of the ridge. I had to remember to keep looking up as the big snow piles in the trees were falling down all over the show. They were an interesting extra obstacle on the way down to. Higher up the wind had blown everything back to crust and once I reached the snowline it was transition time for this little black duck. I felt good after 2 hours on the up and once I got through the crust I find a few lower angle lines I could take off the ridge before traversing back onto it. With the changeable temps I stayed away from slopes greater than 30 degrees. I finished up with a soak in the Kyokoku Onsen which had a really cool pool with a waterfall. Felt fantastic.

    No toilet for you!

The start was a bit flat

The snow piles in the trees are getting a bit droopy.

The cloud cleared a bit occasionally.

The ridge got pretty narrow in places

Super heavy turns in saturated snow down low.

After spending the morning doing some work for Interski inside I finally got to go for a quick walk with my host Diana part of the way up Chisenpuri. It was an easy skin with some surprisingly good corn to ski back down, if you ignored all of the death cookies from the melting snow mounds in the trees. We finished up with beers by the hot spring next to Yukichichibu Onsen and then a soak in the Onsen. A great, relaxing afternoon.

Travel day today, from Niseko to Akakura Kanko for Demo team training before we travel to Bulgaria. My host in Niseko had to catch a much earlier flight so I got to Chitose 6 hours early. I made the trip into Sapporo and bought some down at the Montbell store and was very disappointed with the video camera range at Bic Camera.

The afternoon was spent marveling at the wonders in the New Chitose shipping centre. The flight to Niigata was pretty, and the landing into Niigata was stunning, what a great location for a city.

It has been a busy few days, ahead of a few more busy days. My trip to Akakura Kanko was extended when I caught the wrong train and spent the night at Naoetsu before catching the first train at 5:00am to get to Myoko on time. On Monday we started Team training at Togakushi which was great and all if our Demo runs really came together. Akakura town was great fun with some very cool little local places which served stunning food. I'm in Bulgaria now after our final day of training. For the rest of the adventure can
